  • I drink occasionally. Three times so far this year, been drunk once.

I smoked tobacco for 10 years and quit for 2 years. Then started again, switched to vaping a few months later and vaped on/ off for 9 years (currently on). I did occasionally smoke cigars (when drinking) but I can't stomach them anymore.

Hallucinogenics are my preferred drugs but I live in a country where all of them, even weed, are illegal and I get tested at work. If they were legal and I had a reliable source of clean product I'd smoke weed maybe 10 - 15 days out of the year and do acid once in the summer and shrooms once around the autumn/ winter.

  • Slackware for me.

  • I have one at home but I don't stand at it much, just for a few minutes here and there. But it's still useful that it moves. Its good to have it at the exact right height and raising it makes moving cables easier. I plugged in a new USB dock on my static desk at work the other day. It was a pain in the arse, the hole of which I almost exposed to the whole office when I got up off the floor.

  • Now the kilt was only for day-to-day wear. In battle, we donned a full-length ballgown covered in sequins. The idea was to blind your opponent with luxury.

  • If you mean should you be embarrassed about being set up on a date by your parent then no, as others have pointed out in these comments it's been happening since the dawn of time. I'm 38 and I'd love to be set up on a date by my parents or frankly anyone. But I think I'd find not being consulted about it a bit annoying.

  • Yea human lifespan hasn't really changed over time but as you say infant mortality, pandemics, war and a complete lack of industrial safety for over a century have skewed the average over the years.

  • I know plenty of people who are grandparents in their 30s today.

  • And now you do what they tell ya

  • My house is about 2 miles away from the hospital where I was born but only a couple of meters from the spot where the house my parents lived in when I was born used to stand, which means there's a good chance I can see the spot where I was conceived from my upstairs window.

  • Where I work any problems with a company laptop or phone it just gets replaced and the original is disposed of. Cheaper that way when you factor in the cost of having components on hand, space to store them, the time to replace them and the premium you'd have to pay for either employing staff with those skills or giving them that level of training.

  • Most "non tech-savvy" people I've tried to explain the concept of open source software and initiatives like the Fediverse to just outright don't trust them. Whilst they might say they'd prefer for software and services to not track or manipulate them if you asked them directly, they can't truly conceive of tech that doesn't.

The only interactions these people have had with the digital world have been as part of the modern data scraping hellscape that was once termed "Web 2.0" after the internet went mainstream in the '00s. They weren't part of the internet when it was a niche interest and more open, so they know no better and accept that predatory behaviour as the way of things.

I'm not an expert in psychology but I don't think it's overly dramatic to say it puts me in mind of those poor individuals who were abused as children, never received therapy and go on to seek out other abusers in adulthood.

  • Go on...

  • There are signs where I live that warn about the aggressive seagulls.

  • Actually use Home and End keys to get to the start and end of text.

Ctrl + F for searching text. Very useful.

Alt + Tab for window switching.

Linux + USB drive to switch away from Windows.
