  • We've had disagreements in the past, but I can't agree with you more in this case. It's the entire point

  • 😄

  • Nowadays I just recommend Piefed.zip.

If someone wants a regional instance they usually figure it out by themselves, also the Piefed instance chooser can help and has a latency indicator: https://piefed.social/post/1337079

For the nationale behind, here's a list from a post on [email protected] that's a few months old https://lemmy.zip/c/[email protected]?dataType=Post&pageCursor=P2d1f586&sort=NewComments

    • Lemmy.world is too big
    • sh.itjust.works names contains "shit", which can deter users
    • lemmy.ca is Canadian-centric
    • feddit.org, is German-centric, but technically English speaking too
    • dbzer0 is focus centric
    • programming.dev is topic-centric
    • blahaj is queer-focused
    • discuss.tchncs.de has a difficult name
    • lemmy.sdf.org does not defederate anyone
    • beehaw defederates LW and SJW
    • infosec.pub is topic-centric
    • aussie.zone is country-centric
    • midwest.social is region-centric and admin can power trip at times (https://sopuli.xyz/post/20038037)
  • Piefed offered more features (still does) when lemm.ee shut down.

There weren't that many instances at the time but I just created [email protected] to decentralize

  • I mod quite a few of those, most of them were on lemm.ee

Another reminder to decentralize I guess

  • Admins usually don't want to allow direct registrations without email validation as it makes it too easy for spammers

  • Provider doesn't really have any downside

  • Not the case for Piefed

  • enough of them will auto-report content would be better than what we have.

Seems like an easy abuse case: once the threshold is known, people can create auto reports using puppet accounts, that can't be identified due to anonymous voting

  • let a mod selectively wipe downvotes

How does a mod selectively wipe downvotes with anonymous voting?

  • There were more arguments for the anonymous votes to be abused for vote manipulation than power tripping mods

  • I missed that post, thanks

  • Replying here as it's higher the thread , but the other person you were replying to just seems to be sealioning.

Also, a 3 months old account with 3 posts, 2 about moderation issues, seems like an alt looking to stir up drama.

  • Piefed’s original surge in popularity was arguably due to the main dev quickly implementing a voting agent function for pseudonymous voting.

Piefed's urge came from crossposts comments consolidation, keyword filters, posts flairs, community migration and lemm.ee shutdown

    The private voting was marginal
