  • I’m glad you finished Halo 3, it’s too bad it didn’t live up to your expectations though. It’s understandable for a series with so much hype, but I was still hoping you’d like them like I did. I also played them when they were coming out though, which could play a factor in it. I hope you enjoy Halo 4. It’s my least favourite of 1-4 but it’s still a good game. It’s definitely more polished and modern feeling.

  • I’ll have to look into that then. Thanks for the info.

  • I hope someone takes Starfield’s ship building, adds something new and interesting, and releases it as a main feature of a new game. Every now and then I’m tempted to hop back into Starfield just to mess around with that mechanic. Or maybe if Bethesda makes a sequel, but tames it down and listens to fans to make it a really solid game, and brings back the ship building. I’d definitely give it a shot.

  • Yeah, that’s fair. I get what you mean. I guess I agree with that too because I have more time in Fallout 4 than Starfield by a fair bit. I would still consider them to be comparable though in terms of quality, with Fallout 4 just a bit above Starfield. I like both games though, but don’t love either. I really enjoyed the ship building in Starfield too, it was one of my favourite aspects of the game. Settlement building in Fallout 4 was pretty fun but not nearly as fun to me.

  • I’m pretty sure I was the only person in the world who enjoyed Starfield, though the criticisms are definitely valid. It’s not a good RPG but it does make for a fun initial playthrough if you just do the main and major side quests. I would cautiously recommend it on sale due to the reception but I happened to find it fun. I sunk about 60 hours into it on my first playthrough but didn’t pick it up after. Still, 60 hours of having fun is worth the cost for me personally. I’d only recommend it on sale though, but that also goes for nearly every game so take that with a grain of salt.

I also happened to really enjoy Fallout 4, but again not as an RPG. It’s not a great RPG but it is a really fun open world FPS game with mild RPG elements and a sadly lacklustre post-game, just like Starfield. Procedurally generated areas definitely harmed Starfield where it didn’t harm Fallout 4, but otherwise, to me personally, I’d say they’re comparable in terms of quality. Hot take, I know. I’m prepared to have this be the most downvoted comment in lemmy history, but that’s just my opinion. Take it with the grainiest of salts.

  • I’ll give the video a watch (or part way through anyway) when I get off work today, maybe it’ll help. Thanks for the link.

  • I read about this last night and decided to finally give Morrowind another shot. I’ve got about 6 hours of playtime and I really did enjoy it when I was playing it but I couldn’t get hooked for some reason. I downloaded OpenMW 0.50.0 last night and I’m doing a new playthrough, hoping I get hooked this time. I really want to get into this game more.

  • That’s what makes it so good though.

  • Fair enough. Nostalgia is definitely a huge part of why I love the Halo so much. I still think I’d like them if I tried them today for the first time, but my history playing the game for so long definitely improves my opinion on it for sure. I’m glad people like you are still able to enjoy the game without the decades of nostalgia for the series to sway you. The early games are fantastic.

  • I’m glad you made it through Halo 2 okay. I think I mentioned it a few weeks back but I definitely found 2 to be the hardest in the series on higher difficulties. Most of my love for Halo 2 came from the multiplayer actually. Dual wielding SMGs on Bloodgultch was peak video gaming for me. I still think CE is overall my favourite Halo game but 2 has always held a special place in my heart.

  • Canadian here, I’d stay in my country. But with that being said, not where I currently am for sure. If by money not being an issue you mean I don’t need to look for a job, then I’d build a house in rural Newfoundland right on the ocean. If I have to look for a job but just don’t need to worry about housing expenses, then a nice house, oceanfront, probably BC. Not a major city, I hate big cities, but if I need work then I’d go somewhere close to a big enough city that I could find work no problem. Being able to see the water when I wake up in the mornings would be a necessity in this hypothetical scenario. I’d prefer the ocean but could do a Great Lake too if need be.

I don’t work in a field where it’s possible to work from home but if I did then I guess the same situation as not needing a job, as I can remote work in that case.

That’s just what I’d want though. Realistically, I have my wife and daughter to think about too. Raising a child isn’t easy and having support from my parents and hers has been very helpful, so I’d probably stay where I am, just in a nice house. There’s some smaller bodies of water near me, or larger bodies of water not too far away, so lakefront in my general area probably.

  • We just signed a lease on a new place. Most of the paperwork we could do online but a couple things needed to be dropped off in person at the realtor’s office. It’s a decently large office and there’s TVs there with info and stuff for staff. A few panels that show up talk about seminars for how to better sell a property, and one of them was called “The AI Revolution in Realty”. I have no idea how AI can help with selling a place, everyone I know wants to view places in person. I guess if you’re selling a place to someone overseas who’s about to come here for school (pretty common where I live), then maybe AI can help deceive them so they’re more likely to purchase/rent? That’s the only thing I could think of. Realty is a decently in-person job, that’s not something AI can be integrated with. Maybe I’m wrong and there’s a good explanation for it, but I can’t think of one. It’s the most forced integration with AI I’ve seen personally.

  • I’m anaphylactic to lentils and peanuts, and less allergic to other legumes too. If I ever became vegetarian or vegan I think I’d starve to death.

I’m not currently requiring budget protein (I’m still poor-ish but not as bad as some) but my bills are about to skyrocket soon (need to upsize apartment, looking at around ~$600 increase per month) so I might need to look at budget options soon.

  • I saw this on Doctor Who last night.

Currently rewatching Peter Capaldi’s years with my wife and last night’s episode was Under the Lake (s09e03). For those unaware, the episode takes place in a town that got completely submerged underwater.

  • I have a couple cats, I guess that makes me a toddler then. Does that mean I don’t have to pay rent?

  • Oh good to know, I’ve heard of that mod pack before but never tried it obviously. I’ll keep that in mind whenever I end up finally giving FNV a try. Thanks for the info.

  • I get that. I’ve got a pretty large backlog too, and have been avoiding the larger games in it. I’ve actually never finished a Fallout game other than 4 and I’d love to do a deep dive into the series, especially New Vegas and 3, but with a newborn I don’t have a lot of free time these days, so when I do get some time to myself it’s mostly replaying Skyrim, Oblivion, Elden Ring, Sekiro, or Dark Souls 1 or 3. Those games have been a majority of my playtime for years, and will probably be all I get to now for a while. I always play the Batman Arkham games and now the Spider-Man games too around Christmas/New Years ish, not sure if I’ll get to playing them all this year but I’ll probably finish Arkham Asylum and maybe City, then mess around in Spider-Man 2 for a bit before moving on. I also play Forza with my dad around Christmas too. That’s probably all the games I’ll get around to playing over the next six months or so. It would be nice to get into some new games though, I have a lot to get through.

  • Glad I could help! Hopefully in a future Weekly Recommendations Thread I’ll see you saying you’re modding Skyrim and I can ask how it’s going.

I get what you mean, Skyrim can especially be a bit daunting to mod with just how massive the modding community is. Like I mentioned earlier, nearly 60% of all mod downloads are for Skyrim, it’s crazy.

  • I’ve never used a modpack before, I actually like doing the research and finding which mods to use. In general I actually quite like the look of vanilla Skyrim so my graphics mods tend to be pretty tame.

Here’s some mods I like to use, with links to their Nexus page. A lot of these have prerequisite mods so you’ll need them too obviously, but I didn’t bother writing them out here. The mod pages will link to their required mods.

Absolutely necessary mods for every playthrough, even vanilla:

Skyrim Special Edition Unofficial Patch - fixes many, many bugs and exploits in the game.

Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE64) - not really necessary if you’re just running the mods in this section as all it does is allow certain mods to work, but I always keep it enabled anyway since it doesn’t hurt at all.

SkyUI - if you’re using mouse and keyboard. The original UI is great if you’re using a controller but it’s definitely not designed with M+K in mind. SkyUI makes playing Skyrim with M+K so much nicer. I’m sure it also works well with controller too.

    Mods I always use:

A Quality World Map - makes the map much nicer to look at. There’s a few versions, pick your favourite. I like Vivid with Stone Roads personally.

Realistic Water Two - self explanatory. Makes water look way better.

Alternate Start - definitely necessary to me, lets you choose how to start the game. It’s the main reason I’m able to have so many playthroughs of the game.

Immersive Patrols - adds patrols for different factions, and they can interact with each other too.

Cutting Room Floor - adds cut content to the game.

Blended Roads - fixes weird visual problems with some roads.

Footprints - adds footprints when walking in the snow and ash.

Open Cities - makes cities part of the overworld so there’s no load screens when entering/exiting, similar to Morrowind.

    JK’s Skyrim - improves cities.

Some mods I’m using right now:

Obscur’s College of Winterhold - vastly improves the college, which is by far the most underdeveloped major area of the game in my opinion.

Lightened Skyrim - removes some objects you can’t actually see (rocks under the ground and stuff) which makes the game run a fair bit smoother without a noticeable difference in the landscape.

Magic Sneak Attacks - using magic while sneaking counts as sneak attacks. Not sure why this isn’t in the base game but it’s getting used on all future magic runs for me now.

Apocalypse - Magic of Skyrim - adds a ton of new spells to the game, great for a mage playthrough.

Ordinator - Perks of Skyrim - overhauls the perk trees. Works really well with Apocalypse.

Remember Lockpick Angle - when lockpicking, if your lockpick breaks, the new one starts in the position where the previous one broke, making it much less annoying.

Instantly Skip Dialogue - lets you skip unskippable dialogue. Most dialogue is skippable but some of the annoying monologues aren’t. This fixes that.

Beyond Reach - content expansion. Haven’t used yet, so I’m not sure what’s involved with it. I’ve got it loaded on my current character but I haven’t explored there. It’s supposed to be really good though.

Beyond Skyrim - Bruma - adds Bruma from Cyrodiil to the map. It’s so cool to see what the city (and surrounding area) looks like post-Oblivion crisis. It’s been a long time since I’ve used it, I’m really looking forward to going back again. It’s probably my favourite content mod.

Medieval Markets - vastly improves the markets in the cities.

Glorious Doors of Skyrim - new door designs. They look way better than vanilla to me.

I’d recommend getting an ENB, as well as Lux. I don’t usually, since I like the vanilla look, but ENB+Lux definitely looks objectively better.
