Bit of a mess, kinda depressed, and going through a gender identity crisis :3

(Ongoing issues, brain pls fix)

  • Because of course the arch wiki has the info needed. I should've just checked there from the start, thanks!

  • Huh, neat. On my current EOS Desktop PC it's a bit too late to uninstall everything and reinstall it as a Flatpak, but I'll keep that in mind for new Linux installs. Thank you :3

  • Excuse me if this is a bit of a dumb question, as I have never particularly worried about packaging methods and simply installed what I needed from the official Arch packages or AUR, but how does Flatpak lead to fewer updates? I know it sandboxes things, that's why I've been interested in it for applications I don't quite trust like Discord, but I never got around to actually switching applications of that sort over and trying the format out.

Speaking of Discord, hooking that out of the "normal packages", aka everything I update via yay, would be beneficial anyways, since it's the only thing that forces me to update my system by saying how I'm oh so lucky about a new update coming out and I don't wanna mess with partial system updates. That's kinda besides the point though, I just wanted to complain.

  • And, put simply, that is entirely fair.

While I personally deem Windows to be worth not much more than the sum of its software and hardware support, that is certainly an important factor for many. I would encourage many people to at least attempt to use Linux, as Microsoft's monopoly on non-removed pcs is rather worrying, and they may even prefer Linux completely disregarding that factor, as I did, but you have clearly tried and figured out it doesn't work for you. Depending on the distro Linux can satisfy developers, average computer users, at this point even many gamers, but creative support is clearly lacking and if you need it then that's the final word on that.

While I encourage you to take another look in half a decade, or maybe a full one, please remember that people here on Lemmy are rather... preachy about Linux. So you're gonna get backlash for that decision, no matter how much sense it makes. Please do not let that behavior taint your view of Linux as a whole <3

Or in other words: Every OS has its advantages, I'm happy you found the right one for you at the moment, do give Linux another shot eventually, but for now just ignore the people telling you you're wrong or that there's some kind of easy fix for your multitude of issues and don't let that annoy you :3

  • I bought an HP Envy, one of these convertible laptop thingies, when I didn't know any better. The hinge broke about a month after the warranty expired. Repair costs (at a local repair shop, but still) were like 200€ because apparently I had to buy a whole new top cover for the damn repair to work

Anyways, I'm gonna buy a Framework laptop next because fuck going through that again

  • Personally, instead of Tmux, I'd recommend trying Zellij. I started with Zellij right out of the gate, but a friend of mine who dislikes Tmux a lot quite enjoyed Zellij, so I assume it's somewhat better.

  • Blåhaj is clearly not enjoying it :c

  • With this kind of behavior it's just a self-fulfilling prophecy. Please change and grow as a person, alright? Love yourself and let others love you.

  • Any reason not to just use yay? That's an alias for yay -Syu, which in and of itself, at least if I understood it correctly, is basically just pacman -Syu and from what I've read on the arch wiki -Sy is heavily discouraged.

  • I think that would just be illegal, although I am not certain... maybe it's not

What I'd be more worried about personally is metadata. Sure, they might not know what you sent, but they know who you sent it to and when. The data is generally just gonna be "Oh, this person texts their mum every morning", but Meta already provided message contents in an abortion case, so what if someone is accused of having an abortion (the fact that you can be "accused" of that now in the US is still fucked up imo, but that's besides the point) and then Meta provides info that this teenager sent WhatsApp messages to a medical professional who can perform abortions. That would obviously not work as well as the contents themselves, but it does have value to the legal case.

In the end none of us have anything to hide... until we suddenly do

I know this wasn't argued here, but I'd like to make it clear anyways: You don't have to deal drugs or be a hired killer to want privacy. There are a bunch of reasons you could get in trouble with the government which fall into morally ambiguous areas. And sometimes we just don't want our entire life being analyzed to have an algorithm decide what advertisement is the most effective in getting us to click on it.

  • Oh yeah, absolutely. As I said, this also just personally bugs me since, while the problem usually solved via context, there are moments where that just doesn't work. That's why I originally even thought of this idea.

I'm honestly not even certain anymore, why I put that little bit about those people at the start... I think I'll just edit it out to, ironically in this case, alleviate confusion

  • Alright, now I'm intrigued

What about game support though? I've heard Proton/Wine stuff in general is a bit less functional on Wayland/Hyprland and with how on the edge it is for some games, I'm not in the mood to give more functionality up for better aesthetics

  • I mean, I'm using btrfs and I assume everything's fine? Didn't run into any issues so far, apart from when I accidentally forgot to put my swap file into its own subvolume and timeshift didn't let me do backups anymore for a bit until I fixed that, but as far as I know there's an option in the installer where it does all that for you, I just forgot to tick the box

  • I think it's mostly a problem with rolling updates. Things like Deep Rock Galactic worked perfectly fine for a while and then suddenly the initial screen was entirely black for whatever reason, every time I tried to start it. The game is still playable though, so it's mostly a minor inconvenience. Also, with Team Fortress 2 I have to first switch on Proton, then swap back to native, because it doesn't start at all with proton and if I try to just start it without swapping back and forth, it turns off both my side monitors and changes the middle one's aspect ratio to 5:2 for whatever inexplicable reason. That happened after an update as well. Only one game is entirely broken so far, the rest is just minor inconveniences and I'm waiting for new updates to maybe fix them again.

So yeah, it's mostly fine :3

  • I initially wanted to go Manjaro, but was firmly discouraged. EndeavourOS was recommended as a more terminal-centric alternative. The looks here can be replicated on anything with KDE Plasma though, so there are a lot of other distros to choose from with which you can get this same look. Get the Dracula theme, make some new panels, and add widgets to your liking and you basically got what I have here :3

  • Nope, worked perfectly fine out of the box. I heard bad things about Nvidia and Linux, but I didn't really run into any issues that I can tell are Nvidia's fault so far.

  • Yep, my first Linux distro after finally abandoning Windows. There's so much to explore! I wanna try some new desktop environments like Gnome, maybe try out Mint or something else Debian-based some time, and either once I get an AMD GPU or it gets more stable with Nvidia, try out Hyprland :3

The customizability of all this is awesome and I love it so much so far! The only problem is, as you'd expect, certain games don't work well :c

  • Yep, randomly found it as I was skimming through the game files and thought it suited my general colour theme very well :3

Great game and the dlc is even better, especially the music
