Father; husband; mechanical engineer. Posting from my self-hosted Lemmy instance here in beautiful New Jersey. I also post from my Pixelfed instance.

  • I suppose it depends on context, but someone who was born in PR, but lives in NYC, is a Puerto Rican. Someone born in NYC to a Puerto Rican family is a New Yorican. Both people are ethnically Puerto Rican, but only one is from Puerto Rico.

  • Gringo and yankee are both fine. However, it's most correct to refer to people from the USA by their birth state.

  • Yes. I mean, there's someone for everyone. She just needs to put herself out there. Getting on the apps is a start, but it's important to just be social with people doing activities she enjoys. She needs to keep in mind that dating is supposed to be fun.

  • That part of the problem seems avoidable. There's no need for an instance to automatically mirror content from other instances.

  • Definitely not good for anyone running a website hosting users' content. However, I wonder if the Fediverse offers some resilience to this threat, since everyone can have their own server.

  • Is this happening?

  • Yeah, it seems a little epicurean to devote an entire instance to stoicism.

  • Alice: Make me a sandwich.

    Bob: No. Go fuck yourself.

Alice: sudo make me a sandwich.

    Bob: Okay. Here you go.

  • If we're talking about using existing technology to achieve a semblance of Internet functionality without the Internet, that might include Sneakernet, Pirateboxes, and Deadswaps. Or if you want to get sci-fi with it, there might be human couriers or data mules like in Johnny Mnemonic.

  • Lol my old Maytag is probably the most polite and introverted appliance in my house.

  • They really look different. The geography and atmospheric conditions that affect how the sun and sky looks, including pollution, differ from East to West of wherever you are and also from morning to evening.

  • Certainly nothing like the Jellicle cats.

  • I thought that DiCaprio was dating outside of the range I described. There's nothing wrong with dating your own age. Likewise I don't think there's anything automatically wrong with dating within a wide age range. I think there's such a thing a too wide of an age range and the formula I explained seems to define those limits well.

  • Down votes aren't real on here so don't worry about it. For what it's worth, it wasn't me.

  • Well that's that. If she tries to make it more than friends hanging out, then just politely decline.

  • If you personally prefer to date within a narrower age range that's fine. A lower limit of half your age plus seven (and the corresponding upper limit of your age minus seven times two) is just a reasonable guideline as to whether or not a couple has a socially appropriate age gap.

  • The lower limit is half your age plus seven, so if you're 32 years old then it makes sense to feel uncomfortable. Are you even attracted to her?

  • Why doesn't LibreOffice Calc do it for you?

  • Rarely, yes. Mostly I listen to free podcasts and music that I've paid for or otherwise acquired once. I don't understand paying a subscription for a lower quality version of that. Maybe there are a few live programs that are only available on SiriusXM, but that's a tenuous value proposition.
