  • To be honest, while he would be annoying if I watched 10 of his videos in a row, I don’t understand why hés so hated on Lemmy.

  • I’m not an advanced user, bit the fact that retrodeck was a Flatpak I could easily install on my Steam Deck without installing Deckyloader was a big plus.

  • Well I’m sometimes feeling like I wouldn’t be happy if Linux became the norm, as it would kind of robb me of my rebellion.

Still I’m really invested into Linux, so it ain’t just a rebellion, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants Linux to stay under the 20% marketshare.

I also want to add that dual-booting can be a really good first step and shouldn’t be looked at with disdain.

  • You saved me by talking about the drive not auto mounting after updates.

It turns out my problem this time was different than the last time as it was just the disk not auto mounting.

In the end, restarting my Steam Deck was enough. What an easy to solve and stupid problem!

  • Yeah you’re right about it being portable first.

I sold our Switch to justify getting it on top of my Playstation and my PC’s, so I’m not really using it thé right way as it spends a good amount of time hooked to a big screen.

Yeah let’s hope the Steam Machine is gonna bring more stability when it comes to external hard drives.

  • I know and that’s what’s frustrating.

I’d just want to be able to redirect the Deck towards it or copy it on another hard drive to see if the problem is hardware related.

  • Well I wrote the message in anger after discovering that my games had disappeared again, so I haven’t spent much time investigating😅

Last time, in « storage » in Steam OS the hard drive would still appear, the space occupied by the games would still appear, but the games were nowhere to be found.

In desktop mode, I’d easily find them, but there was no way to show Steam OS the path to these games again.

I’ve tried many workarounds found on the web, but none worked.

I ended up reinstalling my whole library. But now it’s the same thing with Retrodeck on top (although retrodeck might be easier to just move as you can change the path to games)

External storage on Steam OS is a problem

  • This is the only thing I’d use it for, so it would be nice if it could do it.

  • Yeah but it’s a problem for a guy looking for perfection like me😅

  • It’s a shame that the c/steamdeck part can’t be renamed, but it’s also normal to encounter limitations from time to time..

Maybe it’s it’s the first community in need of such a change and it’ll be implemented at one point..

  • Even worse, shés using Windows 11. But a friend of her’s who’s the IT guy for every old lady in the area loves Microsoft products and I can’t do anything against it.

Even proposing to be available to help wasn’t enough..

  • Stupid me, I didn’t see the link😅

  • If only my mom was also open minded about switching to Linux.

Offering her IT assistance wasn’t enough..

  • And that’s why we really need some phones where the average user can use Linux.

  • You have Arch in NixOS? I guess I don’t understand what NixOS really is, even if I’m interested in its ability to be reproduced from one computer to another.

  • Yeah it’s important to know that the first step in an issue free experience on Linux is just getting the right computer.

Still nothing beats a free computer and I’m really happy to have my wifés old MacBook Pro running Fedora for some tasks that my daily driver can’t do. Luckily the broadcom issues happens around once every 2 years for me and not with every update.

And my daily driver, a Microsoft Surface Go hooked to a big screen has other issues, like sometime being really slow when it’s usually quite fast for such low end hardware.

When I’ll inevitably have to replace these, I’ll try to find more suitable Linux friendly second hand devices..

  • Mass Effect 2 for the second time years after playing it on Playstation 3

  • Gcompris is great and you can find in Gnome Software manager.

  • But did you ask creators if you could mirror their channels? Because if you didn’t, you’re just robbing them of some of their revenue.

I understand the need to have more content on Youtube, but I don’t think we should steal it.

I easily found almost enough Linux channels, but I can’t find basketball or videogames reviews channels.

I think we’ll get more content if one day you get the ability to show creators we’re supporting them through Patreon or something else.
