It’s a similar timeline too (~2025). I honestly think it’s very pathetic of them to stoop so low for the “Yankee dollar” (or any other trade relationship).
Agreed, but religion is only one manifestation of the problem. We need to evolve beyond uncritical devotion regardless of the form. Sports, celebrities, personalities, technology, cosmetics, etc - all have pretty unhinged devotees. Causing similar problems.
K’nex appear to be owned by “Basic Fun!”, a U.S. company. Unlike LEGO I can’t find any social obligations that they’ve committed to in the past. https://www.basicfun.com/about/
In the context of power and money, absolutely. Although the fascism is being generated beyond the US too: fossil fuel companies are considered to be the main proponents of disinformation to destroy social cohesion against minorities, for example.
The wizard lego is very disappointing, and goes completely against their other inclusive language. As for pricing, I'm not sure since quality is top tier. But I suppose the profits will tell us just how much room they have to lower their prices.
I appreciate the recommendations! I’m working on a list of alternatives. I might upload it to Codeberg or somewhere similar once it gets to a decent size.
Okay. I think we agree on more than we disagree.I also appreciate your input on effective strategy on serious issues like this - I 100% agree. I think you’ve misinterpreted me a little, so let me clarify:
I support BDS actively. Organised movements are vital.
As I’ve said in the comments: perfect is the enemy of the good. I will drop as many projects as I can. Media players, web browsers, mail clients, social platforms - can all be changed for more ethical alternatives. It doesn’t have to be black or white.
I will never wait for any individual or group to give me the go ahead to do what I think is the right thing. BDS isn’t perfect.
I am not selling anything, or trying to temper my actions to be more palatable to the more hesitant . It also turns out that I’m far from alone in this, but I was equally happy to go first. I don’t think that it’s a waste of effort at all.
So, yes, strategy is important. But personal efforts count too. Among other things, I am challenging the widely held apathy (and empathy deficit) held by tech enthusiasts that such a move is pointless or too difficult. And along the way I am finding likeminded people I didn’t know were out there.
Damn. You’re right. I actually thought my title implied that connection, but I can see how it works the opposite way too. I’m not sure how to phrase it without editorialising too much / posting opinion as fact. I’m open to suggestions.
It’s a 180° u-turn on their statements just a year or two ago. The timing is interesting from that point of view. USA is also their largest market. ~And while LEGO is a privately held company, they likely have US investors too.~ In other words, I don’t see any other motivation for the shift than the political climate in the U.S.
