  • NVK isn't yet fully recommendable (otherwise gaming-oriented distros would save themselves all the hassle as well). It mostly works, but the performance often is horrendous. For gaming purposes as well as CUDA you still have to rely on the proprietary driver to get the most performance everywhere, and that thing is as awful to install as ever. It also got some issues on desktop for which distros like Bazzite implement workarounds and sane configurations that are known.

    Nvidia is just awful on Linux…

  • Hard no, with an Nvidia GPU you absolutely should go for a distro like Bazzite to avoid the driver headache.

    This is a BIOS issue anyway, not a distro issue.

  • Try flashing an older BIOS version, something from late 2024. I find reports about some AMD "CPPC" feature that causes breakage in certain hardware scenarios. Different distros probably wouldn't solve this.

  • …while being forced to do so to achieve a basic thing, and after finding it as the solution on the web (because it usually is). Remember, Pop!_OS screwed up so badly that the installation of a common user program caused the removal of core system packages. While it's correct to expect people to read warnings, expecting beginners and common users to either learn about the (very complex) inner workings of an operating system just to install something or to let go of their entire gaming library is unreasonable. And although Linus of course should have an interest in learning these things given his work and should've taken more care, the video was specifically to showcase how their experience as new users look like. And Pop!_OS was generally regarded as user-friendly, not as solely aimed at professionals (important detail).

    If the only solution to a problem with a very common task on a user-friendly OS is hidden behind an advanced-level skill wall (yes, knowing all the important packages if your OS means you're an advanced user) that may kill you if you do a single wrong action then your system offers shitty solutions.

    Fortunately both user-friendly distros and aspects of them like Flatpak have gone way further since then, so this shouldn't happen as easily anymore. The warnings in apt are way more noticeable now too I think. The Linux community learned from all the bad press… most of it at least.

  • Yeah, LibreOffice stuck with the old UI/UX for better and worse. Luckily we do have a nice selection of Office Suites in addition to them. OnlyOffice, WPS Office, Collabora, KDE Calligra, Softmaker Office… surely there's one for everyone on Linux.

    Personally I like OnlyOffice.

  • What are you talking about? You can copy-paste from Terminal programs to GUI programs and vice-versa like everywhere else (with the terminal of course needing CTRL + SHIFT + C / V, which as we know is historical to Unix terminals). I'm doing that for years, so does my family. It works just fine.

    And bringing up Nvidia now really is bending down backwards to paint Wayland as bad while it's painfully obvious it's the driver's fault. We all know the classic Nvidia driver sucks in more ways than one and loves to break, even Nvidia knows that and works on a replacement. That's not Wayland's fault.

  • What's always funny to me when someome brings up missing features of Wayland is how, apparently, the missing features of X11 are getting pushed under the table or somehow also blamed on Wayland in some twisted way. Like, holy shit, compare the display settings of KDE on a modern display between Wayland and X11. My laptop didn't even show a third of all options anymore.

    Sure, it will be nice once Wayland can do a few things (better), the current development push surely helps. But it's not like X11 can do everything either.

  • Something tells me that if a city can do it in 2004, so could a company with all the improvements in 2025. And as with the city, the biggest issue will be the management being idiots (corruption) and/or underfunding the IT.

    If a company has to treat their employees like delicate flowers who can't deal with a slightly different interface it's not the issue with software, but the companies' training program / policies and unwillingness to invest in them. And it's not like investments in FOSS IT and your employees wouldn't pay off, all those proprietary licenses are expensive as hell. See link, the city saved money despite even having to develop whole new tools, acquire licenses and whatnot. Lots of small stuff not necessary today anymore.

    Not saying it wouldn't be a complicated endeavour, but certainly not impossible and definitely one that pays off.

  • The code is immaculate. Its fully tested as well. No one has looked at the code, they've just complained.

    Even if that's correct it isn't even the main reason why people are pissed about the use of AI. No matter if the code is "perfect" or not, it was created primarily using inherently immoral and outright dangerous tools.
