Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.

  • YSK: Nitecore makes USB-C rechargeable AA batteries that are 1.5 volts like a standard alkanine batteries and not 1.2 volts like your typical rechargeable Ni-Mh batteries.

  • If we focus on negative emotions, the ones like irritation or anxiety are more sneaky. I don't tend to notice them the moment they arise, and when I finally do, they've already poisoned my mind and it's much harder to get rid of them. Anger, on the other hand, is such an immediate and strong emotion that there's nothing sneaky about it. It won't go undetected but rather acts as this kind of mindfulness alarm. The moment anger arises, my mind shines this spotlight on it and it loses meaning and kind of just vanishes. If I, say, make a big mistake or break something, the anger does arise, but I immediately realize that it already happened and getting angry over it is just additional negativity on top of an already bad situation, and I then just let go of it. It's not that I repress it but rather I simply just don't feed it. You can't really stay angry for much longer than seconds unless you start telling yourself a story to maintain that anger. It's mostly optional.

  • It's probably not that I'm surprised by myself - because being me is my normal - but rather other people acting differently that surprises me, as it highlights the difference between us. The first thing that comes to mind is my seeming incapability to get angry at things or people. I just don't tend to feel much extreme emotion, and it's so odd seeing other people lashing out. Online it's different, as I just assume that those people are kids with undeveloped brains who write those angry comments on political threads especially, but I often see adults acting that way in real life too, and it just boggles my mind how someone can get to that age and still completely lack the ability to control their emotions.

  • Not really. It's mostly old age I worry about - not dying.

I'm however slightly optimistic that I might be able to reach so called longevity escape velocity during my lifetime due to advances in medical science and life extension therapies.

  • My personal philosophy with first aid kits is to start from treating life threatening wounds and then build up from there so the three absolutely most crucial pieces would be:

    • Tourniquet
    • Pressure dressing (e.g. Israeli bandage or OLAES) - for bleeding that doesn’t require a tourniquet.
    • Hemostatic gauze (like QuikClot) - helps stop bleeding, especially for junctional wounds (groin, armpits)
  • Other than cancer nothing else really. Not even the people who use the word "hate" when they mean "dislike".

  • I wonder the same about people with hundreds of unread emails. Almost as if they don't know that you can unsubscribe from newsletters.

  • I'm not sure what this information is good for.

  • I don't think that's the case. Before the karma system there wasn't really an incentive to dunk on someone. Maybe for someone who just wants to be a jerk, but they didn't really get any applause for it. Nowadays every piece of content put online is put through the filter of "How will this be received?" It's performative from the very beginning.

  • Online discourse stopped being about changing minds and started being about farming clout.

Most replies aren’t written to the person they’re replying to; they’re written to the invisible crowd that hands out upvotes. The goal isn’t persuasion, it’s applause. That’s why nuance is dead: nuance doesn’t get you 500 upvotes and a gold award. A savage one-liner that owns the libs / the chuds / the tankies does.

If you actually believe your view is correct, the morally consistent move when you meet disagreement is to engage and try to convince the other person (ideally while staying open to being convinced yourself). That requires listening, steelmanning, and sometimes admitting “yeah, you’ve got a point there.” None of that is rewarded here. What is rewarded is the quick, brutal dunk that signals “I am safely on the correct side” to the rest of the hive.

So people don’t debate in good faith anymore; they perform righteousness. It’s easier, it feels better, and the points roll in. We went from trying to do good to trying to feel good, and the karma counter is the drug that keeps the whole circus running.

  • I'm slightly concerned about what the future holds in regards to AI porn, especially for me and other people like me with a higher-than-average draw towards porn.

I've been playing around with generating softcore pictures with AI and then turning those into video, and while it's far from perfect, it's pretty fucking good already, and it's only going to get better. Some of the stuff it generates you literally can't tell apart from a real picture/video, and it lets me specify my exact niche kinks and preferences and then spits out an endless feed of just that. In the past I've had to sift through piles of crap only to find a few gems, but not with AI - it serves me exactly what I ask for, and I never run out of new content.

What's also noteworthy is that while we're speaking of porn now, this will however apply to all media. Music, movies, TV series, games, or just YouTube- or TikTok-like video feeds. An endless stream of content perfectly tailored to your exact tastes, and every next piece of content just going to be better than the last one.

We're going to be entertained to death.

  • That kind of hate is almost definitely coming from other women. I'd say that from an evolutionary psychology perspective, it's about them raising the bar for everyone by going the extra mile to look pretty. It's the same idea as is behind slut-shaming: if you're giving sex too easily, then it starts being expected from us too. Or if your neighbor buys a new car, now suddenly your own car feels devalued and you resent them for it.

  • It's over a decade old meme. Nowadays he's a successful business owner with a family.

  • My house is 90m², though the upstairs has a low ceiling and mostly just functions as a bedroom, so it's more like 60m² in practice. While I wouldn't want to raise a family here, I still find it perfectly sufficient for two people. It also comes with the additional benefits of having fewer rooms to heat, clean, and renovate. I also like that my yard feels a lot bigger due to the smaller footprint of the house itself.

That being said, I would prefer it to be slightly bigger. Maybe one extra room and a bigger-than-1.5m x 1.5m bathroom.

  • When I started lifting, my thighs got so thick that I started going through a pair of jeans every 6 months or so. Then I just stopped buying them and have now gone without for about 15 years. Had the same issue with work pants but am now buying the stretch ones.

I used to think that jeans are indestructible. Apparently not.

  • Perfect fit - no belt needed!

  • Excluding underwear and socks, my entire wardrobe is earth tones - mostly olive green. I basically wear the same outfit every single day. I don't want to have to think about what to put on. Now everything I have goes with everything. When I take a clean shirt, I just grab the one from the top of the stack.

It has become a kind of inside joke. Whenever someone catches me with a new piece of clothing, they compliment my choice of (green) color.
