  • Yeah, you use whichever you want and just worry about it less.

  • It's not necessarily bad to have on hand. Sometimes you need to reference bullshit.

Not that I think this was the primary purpose, of course.

  • Put an extra dollar in there and they'd make a mint.

  • I recently picked up a Ubiquity Dream Machine router, so I'd probably go with PoE Unifi camera if possible. Just got a find someone to run conduit, or I've gotta watch some home improvement videos.

  • I'm also using Reolink without an SD card, WiFi, hooked up to FTP, and streaming directly to HA. Old doorbell wires for power.

Reolink didn't seem to have the type of stream ideal for Frigate? I don't remember the protocol offhand.

  • Go to their GitHub and look at issues and their comments first.

  • It's honestly not that hard to memorize your times tables. You do it once in third grade and it stays with you for life.

I use it daily, personally. Comes up a ton in gaming. How many of these can I afford? Etc.

Chess is a good one. No calculator allowed. You have six minutes to make 9 moves, how many seconds per move? And don't take too long because the calculation eats into your time.

  • It's also really nice to just be able to do grocery store math without pulling out your phone. Are the 12 packs or the 24 case cheaper?

  • Because it functions as a base for doing slightly more complicated math in your head.

If you don't have 7x7 memorized, it's a lot harder to do 77x70.

  • Watch the video of the Station Nightclub Fire. You'll be scarred, but you won't ignore fire alarms.

  • I'm currently doing this with an angular project that's a bit of a clusterfuck. So many layers.

I'm still having to break it down into much, much smaller chunks and it's not able to do much, but it is helpful. Most useful thing was that I started with writing a pure SQL query with several joins and told it "turn this into linq using existing entities".

I think they'll completely replace ORMs.

  • Part of it is cultural and habit and that is something you can just decide to change. It helps if someone brings it up, like this post, or you might not even think of it.

I bought a $10 power strip / surge protector last week. It was the first time this occurred to me. I pulled out the manual to throw it away, and it was only my experience in writing technical documentation that made me stop and consider actually reading/skimming it.

Maybe I'll change this habit. Maybe I'll start reading these things.

Of course some of them aren't meant to be read. But you can usually tell pretty quickly,

  • It's just a pun.

  • It is nice to have the smoke detector communicate out its status. I sure like to know when my house is on fire, even if I'm not home. And a notification about a battery being low is much nicer than incessant beeping.

None of this replaces the primary local, physical functionality. You don't depend on technology for the thing to work; it's just an addition.

  • It's expressed incredibly poorly. The title is true, one absolutely should be aware of what information is public.

You're a fool to trust Reddit with it more than particular instance admins.

  • Lemmy does make some attempts to hide your IP address, but everyone should know that any time you visit a website, that website gets your IP.

So of course your instance has your IP (whoever's running it). And if you ever explicitly visit another domain, they'll get your IP as well.

  • Any Republicans in particular? Which are the most worthless ones?
