  • There was a pilrimage/challenge a friend of mine went on. It was walking 20 miles each day for 3 days for a total of 60 mi/96.5 km. That was in upstate NY where there are plenty of hills to keep it interesting

Blisters, chafing and fatigue is common but many people do that every year

  • My great grandparents immigrated from Eastern Europe to the US. My Grandma told us about the time one of their relatives came to visit them. She remembers that he almost never took off his shoes, even when sleeping. They asked him about it and he said it was to run out the back door if the secret police came. He was amazed that nobody else in the family did the same, and then even more amazed to learn that nobody HAD to

  • Learning the manual of arms (procedure of loading, firing, unloading a type of firearm) is a YouTube video away and isn't hard. If you can use a drill, a stapler or a nerf gun you can figure out how to make a gun go bang.

The difficult part is technique that makes the bullets go where you want them to. Shooting fast is easy, just mag dump in a general direction and you'll eventually hit something. Shooting slowly and accurately is way more effective and responsible. Basic marksmanship takes a bit of practice to hone but anyone can do it, including you reading this.

But shooting fast AND accurate is a skill that takes consistent practice to hone and keep. That's what makes competitons like USPSA so challenging

  • Reading is always good, and waay better than scrolling. Audiobooks/podcasts are also cool and if you can't fully commit yourself to writing maybe just jot down an outline to flesh out later

  • I listened to a 99% Invisible episode on how EMS got started. Totally worth a listen

For a while (60s-70s) there was a stigma that early Paramedics couldn't provide adequate care because they were not doctors and nurses though in reality they spent lots of time training in hospitals working with them.

You can even see this in tv shows like Emergency. Any time they have a medical situation they radio a hospital to get direct medical advice from a doctor. It also gives a (kinda) realistic reason to explain what they are doing to the viewing audience

  • OSMand seems kinda clunky but it lets you do more stuff to really customize it if you want but I still find myself getting lost in the menus sometimes. But I like it for hiking/outdoorsy stuff

Organic Maps/Comaps is slick and smooth and really easy to use for most everyday stuff we'd use Google Maps for

Other people have mentioned it but one of the best things you can do is a little mapping of your local area on OpenStreetMap. Try to include the places you go to the most, or at least making notes so other know what needs added. That makes any app or service that uses it better for yourself and others around you

  • That's fair, I think it's cool because I have so few people in range normally.

People have put nodes on essentially a weather balloon and that had cool results

  • Airline passengers with nodes are amazing repeaters for the few minutes they are overhead. Thanks to them I've seen signals hop to my nodes from nearly 200 miles away

It's crazy how fast meshtastic/lora technologies have taken off in just a few years

  • Yes.

  • Well yeah you don't need currency when value is based on physical stuff Catan style. I make brick, I trade for milk.

But when you have a trade that doesn't make physical goods or doesn't involve the stuff you have to offer you'll need a do-good coupon that everyone agrees to represent value.

  • Seems like they're pissed because they didn't get their cut of federal funding

  • Yes and no. It's more I want the big socials to have competition and shrink

  • With AI seeping into everything I think offline backups should be made of everything that is important to you or your organization.

Imagine you are a government or corporation. Instead of recognising and dealing with any painful past events you just pull a 1984 and rewrite history, changing movies and editing old documents.

This is scary shit because we know people are already abusing it for their gain

    [ disagree (not recommended) ]

  • I close the door when I poop.

It's no secret, and I'm not doing anything wrong, but it's MY business and nobody else's.

  • Fingerprints are the least invasive of biometrics imo. If your fingerprints are weak the govt may put you under more scrutiny "just in case" and I think that would be a much greater violation of your privacy

Prints prove you were in a place just like an airport camera and airline records would. As long as your phone/computer etc isn't unlocked via fingerprint that's really all it can be used for on most cases. Don't get me wrong it isn't ideal and I see your point of wanting to avoid giving that away regardless
