I live an increasingly confusing double life as TeaHands the game dev, and TheGiddyStitcher, multicrafter extraordinaire!

Currently working on my first ever commercial indie game, a minimalist city builder.

  • Hah, thanks, appreciate that! It's all good, I'm saving up bit by bit. Just can't quite justify the whole cost at once, you know? But I'll get there, same as with everything else.

    • £80 would pay for a Steam page for my little indie game thus fulfilling a lifelong dream
    • £200 would pay for Christmas which is always a big money stress
    • £500 would let me get some much needed dentistry done and remove that worry
    • £1000 would give me a decent emergency fund to reduce stress in general
    • £10,000 would be the point where I could feel more independent, maybe even get a car
    • £100,000 would let us move somewhere that isn't totally isolated from civilization
  • I am one with my bookshelves. Unfortunately the Steam Deck hasn't fared well.

  • That wasn't really OP's question though. I'm not a fan of mobile games either, mostly for the same reasons as you but also tbh just because I don't like using my phone for much when I could get a better experience on a bigger screen.

But "I have some problems with the choices of the mobile gaming industry as a whole" is a very different statement to "lol mobile loser why don't you try some real games?"

  • Monkeys, and old people who never learned it! My grandma can just about manage to call me on WhatsApp but sometimes I'll try and demonstrate basically anything else and she genuinely can't see the difference between gestures I'm using, or which parts of the app are interactive or not.

Same in gaming. She saw me playing WoW once in about 2008 and I remember her being genuinely confused about how I could possibly tell what was my character and what was everything else. Even though, you know, your character is always in the middle of the screen. Just couldn't grasp it no matter how long she sat and watched!

    Bless 😅

  • People just like to dunk on things to make themselves feel better. And this can be especially a thing in gaming because lots of gamers are badly-adjusted and desperately need to feel better. It's nothing really to do with mobile games specifically at all, you see the same thing with anything outside of the very narrow window of "real" games ie the games these people happen to be into.

It's one thing to have a preference, it's quite another to look down on other people for having a different one. We're all just choosing to spend our time staring at pixels on a screen.

  • Such is life. Least I went out having an adventure with friends.

...and at least they won't live to have any new adventures without me.

  • Today is most certainly not the day, as I have covid and am mostly just sleeping. But thank you for believing in me lol

  • Ooh yay, most of us LOVE escape rooms

  • So it's not everyone you've had sex with, it's just that everyone there is part of the group? I choose to believe it's only the ones I'm still friends with.

We all have a nice catch up and then head home?

  • This sounds mint and I'm sad I'm too solodev to make it.

  • OP may have made a tactical error asking this on the internet

  • This seems pretty normal to me. I used to get a 6 month WoW sub for my birthday in summer and then again at Christmas and that was what, over 15 years ago. Also I was an adult, but still, hobby supplies are a great gift.

  • If it's a long complicated surname you can't go wrong with a short simple first name. I'm gonna throw Sam into the ring, after our lord and saviour Samwise.

  • We didn't get tickets for the actual live final, so had a party house rented a short drive out of Liverpool along with some friends for the Saturday night. Can confirm even the ones that started the night thinking they didn't care about Eurovision were shocked by the end!

Loreen is a legend but that song was just not great. So many others deserved it over her and it's a bit depressing that the jury members chosen have such consistently bland tastes every year.

But also, like, it's a song contest. I may be obsessed, I may have an ever-growing group of US friends I've introduced to the spectacle, I may learn all the words to songs in languages I don't understand and I may have sewn myself a special flag dress for Liverpool. But it's a song contest, I'm not actually furious about it like some people were 😅

  • Thank you! I'm really proud of it so far 🙂

  • It's just a really simple hex-based city builder. Very minimal, barely even a game really. Suitable first project for a solo dev I'm hoping!

(If you're on Mastodon I post, among other things, updates on it here)

  • That sounds so fun! I've had dancing on my list for ages but sadly can't find any groups doing anything around here. One day!

  • Been a decent year for my bucket list! I managed to tick off:

    • get married
    • go to Eurovision
    • go on a cruise

Also started work on my first "real" video game, been learning how to make them as a hobby since 2020. Releasing that sometime next year will be another thing ticked off the list!

We have had a lot of crap stuff happen as well though (health stuff and whatnot) and it's just generally been a very stressful and disrupted year so I'll be glad to see the back of it despite all the good that happened.

  • I have special sewing scissors, AND I have special haircutting scissors, as well as us having just regular everyday scissors of course. Can confirm after a couple of "incidents" my husband is now very very careful to pick up the right ones!
