  • lemm.ee users, how well did the switch end for you?

    • I'm part of the mod team at [email protected] (formerly [email protected]), and PieFed is what users ended up voting on as to which instance we should move to. At first I was hesitant to go to another platform, but I've gotten totally used to it by now. I'd say the best part of PieFed is flairs, they're so much better for sorting out posts!
    • I use Postimages for image hosting.

  • I ended up switching to a number of instances. The account I'm on right now is lemmy.today, which claims to be financially stable with good uptime. But my main account is on piefed.social.

I can't say I've missed the old lemm.ee communities, although I do regret that all the images I uploaded were deleted, I thought they'd somehow be spared by the other instances. I use external image hosts now.

  • There's planned downtime every night when we turn on the Roomba and it runs over the cord.

  • Just give me all the pancakes you have. Wait, wait. I'm worried what you just heard was, "Give me a lot of pancakes." What I said was, "Give me ALL the pancakes you have". Do you understand?

  • The next day: 'What? Six bank robberies!? But I just vandalized the library!' 'Nice try. They saw your plate with all the 1's and I's.' 'That's impossible! I've been with my car the whole ti-- ... wait. Ok, wow, that was clever of her.'

Once it's on the Internet, it stays forever, but only for the things you DON'T want. For the things you DO want, it will be wiped off the face of the Earth by tomorrow.

  • Will images uploaded to lemm.ee be federated with the other Lemmy servers, or will they be permanently deleted?

I've heard conflicting answers to this question, and I'd like to get a definite answer.

  • There was one I can think of.

It's called the DragonBox Pyra, a handheld computer that runs Debian, and has a keyboard and touchpad. It kinda looks like a DS. It's apparently fully open-source from the top down.

But, the thing is, it's been in development since 2015. It's still not ready for consumers. They started shipping their first batches in 2020, and by then the technology was already outdated. When it's finally released (if it ever does release), it won't be up to modern standards at all. If you want something like that, at this point you're better off getting a GPD Win and installing your distro of choice on that.

It's a shame, really. It looked like it could have been so much more...
