    You’re not a centrist. You’re either arguing in bad faith or unaware that you’ve already drank ALL the koolaid. You’re echoing every single Republican talking point and dismissing all evidence to the contrary without actually reading it.

    The infrastructure spending you’re being so dismissive of is a CRITICAL investment in our nation’s health that has been neglected by the last 50 years of for-profit governance and it passed with bipartisan support.

    Inflation is nuts all over the world and not even remotely within Biden’s control. Interest rates are high because of a) COVID and the related supply chain disruptions, b) extreme corporate greed and, c) corrections for years of Trump artificially suppressing the federal rate despite numerous advisors telling him it needed to be raised.

    If you’re genuinely concerned about the constitution and your rights, take a look at all the unconstitutional the things Trump has already explicitly said he would do if re-elected. There is no center position anymore. If you don’t oppose Trump, you support fascism.

  • This is the correct answer. All of the replies saying to use Firefox/support FOSS are missing the point. Once Google rolls this out and promotes it as higher security and guaranteed ad impressions, it will become the standard because all of the websites you want to use will opt in. It won't do you much good to keep using Firefox when your bank, your employer/school, and every news/weather/sports site you try to use require a Google-verified, ad-displaying browser. It's not our choice to make, and that's the point of doing it this way.

    I'd go one cynical step further to say that once they have complete control over how pages are displayed on your end, they'll roll out a subscription for ad-free* browsing, which will eventually include ads anyway a couple years down the road.

  • I’m actually kind of disappointed in how popular Beehaw is becoming for this very reason. The whole spirit of federated social media is the decentralization of ownership and authority, and yet so many people are flocking to the instance where the judgement of what is or isn’t acceptable is concentrated to a few moderators. I don’t disagree with much of Beehaw’s stated ideology, except maybe for their condemnation of rationalism, but it still seems like an elitist mindset to have the values of the community determined by a select few. I think that ideally mods should be there for spam and hate speech and that everything else should essentially be community moderated via up and down votes. Limiting the community’s voting ability in favor of strict moderation inevitably leads to power-tripping moderators eventually. Sure, you can move the community to a different instance if it gets bad, but I’m not totally convinced that that’s as much of a zero-cost operation as people make it out to be. Especially if you’re talking about relocating a large community from a very popular instance.

    Here’s hoping that all of the Lemmy communities grow into healthy, thriving environments away from the destructive financial interests of traditional social media, but please, let the people have their downvotes.
