  • U.S. sample size of 1 here. I don't have any Christmas decorations up yet, but we have begun updating gift lists, purchasing some gifts (I monitor sales to find the actually decent ones for the 3-4 months prior, but don't usually buy unless it's really good), and we've watched a couple of Christmas-ish movies (Rise of the Guardians and Alien X-mas). We'll put up our decorations the weekend after Thanksgiving. Oh, and I keep an eye out for Christmas decorations we like for a decent price. Haven't found any yet. Did fine a decent projector for half off. I suspect it's really more like $40 off, but that's decent. Haven't bought it yet, though.

  • Maybe English isn't their first luggage.

  • Why is anyone relying on reactions for anything important and/or time sensitive?

Also, even if you're not getting your reaction summary email timely, you can look at the email you sent and see the reactions.

Also also, if I am scheduling something first thing and it's late in the work day, I'm messaging the key people. To do otherwise seems like bad planning/choice making/trying to get out of meeting at that time. Alternatively, I would just send the invite as the first contact. At 8:59, if the key people hadn't responded, cancel with the message, not everyone was able to meet. How about this date and time?

  • I also have a customer service requirement in my performance evaluation that says something about responding to emails within a fairly small amount of time. This reaction counts. So, yeah, everything that doesn't require a real response gets a 👍 or a 🎉. I'm not missing an opportunity to get a raise or getting a quality improvement plan for something ridiculous like that.

  • Blathering blatherskite!

  • That one is the closest to my dad's hair during this era, actually.

  • Well, you just start like most anything, I guess. I talk to them. A commercial comes on and I say why I don't think it's good to listen to. I talk about them targeting children, why that's a problem, normalizing unhealthy things, predatory practices for poor/uneducated/whatever, and so on. I point out specific wording or presentation that makes it problematic and explain it. They probably don't understand most of it yet, but the way I look at it, I'm planting seeds that'll make more sense when they're ready for it.

  • How depressing.

  • Not by me! I work my 40 and the rest goes my family. I'm lucky I can get by with 40.

  • I usually let them go for me out of laziness, but I mute them for my family to spare them the exposure. I also regularly discuss the problems with the way things are advertised with my kids so that they won't get sucked in by them. Crazy world. Hard to avoid adverts in the U.S.

  • Depends on the parents. Most of us swing out the other way and test out other ways of being. I don't clean like my parents did when I was growing up, but getting used to it then means it's now not a big deal when that is required. I'd like to clean more than I do, and one day I will. It's not a big deal and I'd rather spend the time with my kids. One day they'll help me clean regularly. I was given 5 chores a day (in addition to regular things you encounter across your day). It'll depend on the amount of time to complete, but I'll probably have my kids do 2-3 per day. Just part of preparing them to live on their own, while we get some help with the workload to maintain a home.

  • Showerthoughts @lemmy.world

Commercials seem to be normalizing an unhealthy work-life balance more.

  • Yes.

  • The trick for hand saws is sharp blades and patience. Don't rush it. If you put it where you want it and have patience, most things practically cut themselves (save for something like a tree). If your blade is dull, you're more likely to make a mistake.

  • I use that entire drawer for cheeses.

  • Or a total asshole trying to fuck the rest of us anal motherfuckers. Lol

  • Why use a gun chambered in 6.5cm, 308win, 300wm, or 338lapua for home defense, unless you mean defense of your large estate and need long range? Shotguns are long and unwieldy. I'd go for hand guns with rounds that distort when they hit something so there is less chance of penetration and continuing on. Most likely 22lr or 9mm. 22 has less stopping power, but usually more capacity.

  • Just wait until 40. It's like going down a step with your eyes closed without knowing the step is coming. Very jarring and painful.

  • I usually do mine solitarily.
