  • If a person is perceived as a threat, purposedly adjusted GenAI can suggest them to touch live wires or mix a homemade explosive while they do a casual home fixing for the first time.

    My initial thought, although greatly blurred, is in that if we outsource our research and decision making to AI, the owners of AI can spoil it for us to either make us fall in line or sabotage our ways.

    The normal GenAI can be gated and availiable for rich persons, but the one that is cheap or free, that is used by low to middle households, can as well be used to inspire us to follow corporate agenda or even self-terminate if we aren't in their picture of the future.

  • FYI that facade is of a liquor store franchize Red&White in Russia. There are plenty of them everywhere you can get cell network, and new ones still keep opening in random places. Idk what was there, on the picture, before, probably a local lawyer agency, and I'm sure they didn't put lions themselves, just inherited them from previous renters. Their business constatly growing year after year without average wages growth is kinda telling how fun it is there. At this point, I'm not 100% positive that tommorow morning I won't see my workplace or even my home not occupied by an alco shop.

  • We haven't seen the worst of it. Most people won't care about lack of security updates unless nagged by MS directly. What damages older platforms worse is incompatible apps, especially Chromium-based browsers and Electron-based apps, and therefore individual websites that block outdated versions.

    If you are to join a chat with your boss in MS Teams, you need to make it work. That won't fly on older versions of Win10, neither on previous OSes. But their service's web version, probably limited, works as long as Firefox keeps working on aging systems, while Chrome gave up a long ago, and may abandon Win10 too if they'd like to.

    When that would happen, when there would be a popular piece of software requiring a non-negotiable switch, that would pronounce Win10 a dying platform. That may be more of a streamlining choice on devs' side rather than an obvious necessity, but who cares? If baby me had Steam or a favorite meme page stop working, I could've cried to my parents until they fix it with money.

    Like in marketing, you don't sell the product itself, you sell vibes, benefits of ownership, not wheels but miles. Win11 should become a choice of ultimate convinience, usability, comfort - compared to erroring out Win10 PCs. This needs enough momentum, and the end of Chromium on W10 is the best thing that would happen to modern MS targeting existing users.

  • For me it was like: well, since it is here and it's paid for, where's this damn thing? I see a thin usecase of playing from the couch with wired headphones at night.

    Seems like it's proprietary drivers use speakers when it shouldn't, and doesn't use when I could've used them. Two shots, all missed.

  • Schools in my area had a dress code, and my school almost succeeded at requiring a select jacket model as a must (done by a single local company connected to a school admin, wink-wink), but faced backlash over poor price/quality balance 🙃

    One of the unusual upsides, many men well in their 20s, who otherwise couldn't be bothered, had their high school formal suits to wear on future funerals and weddings. I was one of them and that was handy.

    If the uniform should be there, to ensure it's not hostile, it may be:

    1. Of basic rules. Formal dresses, dark under the waist line, white over it.
    2. Civilian models, without a glimpse of cop/military details and ranks, insignias.
    3. Common to everyone without any color differentiation (and requirements to buy it in exact shade of a color).
    4. Rather cheap or even subsidized, shared from older to younger kids, because children are frequently growing out of them and it's a bummer to buy ten+ sets of dresses.
    5. Purposely unisex and non-sexualized models.

  • Offtop, but did you make speakers and/or headphone jack on your controller work over BT in Linux? When mine (albeit a PS4 knock-off gamepad) is wirelessly connected, it's not shown in audio devices at all.

  • The problem with Meta (also russian Yandex) is that it was caught having web-side trackers that send stuff to localhost, where it gets caught by Meta apps and then sent to Zucker servers. This two-bit scheme was noticed by researchers and isn't there anymore, but it is a clear display why having these apps preinstalled is a problem. Regular ads are better than Mark looking over your shoulder whenever his meta pixel triggers.

  • First installed it after leaving reddit with everyone else. I could only host for others/myself or play unofficial games. Connecting to others in off realm lead to a disconnect one minute in, when this check occured, no matter what. QP was unplayable, so it wasn't much fun.

    Darktide released 100% working, so I dabbed in it for some time, before discovering that they undid that limitation in further patches for VT2 too.

    EAC presented such possibility a lot of time ago, and only a year back FatShark implemented it.

    So yeah, since that I downed a couple of hundred hours under Mint/Arch/Cachy with Proton, no trickery involved. It works pretty fine, I even had a chance to try it on an old laptop, so performance is at least on par with Win if not better. The only thing is that sometimes, like once in two weeks, it thought that it's files are corrupted and made me recheck them before allowing me to enter lobby.

  • And Vermintide 2, using EAC, just ticked the box to not being hostile towards Linux, and it just works now. Hated Denuvo works too. There's now a minority of games that don't play ball with penguins.
