  • Hard to explain that tab I've had open for 8 months for something I've been meaning to read.

  • In a couple of generations all memory and signs of your existence will be wiped out anyway. Enjoying what's in front of you now and doing the good you can for the few people you can affect is easily enough.

  • 1080 is quicker to download an easier to store than 4K. There is a difference between them, but it's not a huge deal if youvd got good quality full HD. Leaves me plenty of space on my home server for other data hoarding.

  • Considering what a serious issue it has become for young men to be drawn into the incel/manosphere; it sounds like there's work to do here.

It's not entirely unreasonable for someone to ask about something they're curious about that's completely legal. Good that he feels comfortable enough with you to talk about this. I would say it needs a deep dive into what's going on under the layers of his mind. If I were in this situation, then I would look for a trusted man in his 20s (his cousin, your own friend, a friend's son) to actually take him. He might fond it too scary to go on his own. I would want to engage with him and stay in the loop rather than shut this down with a "no". Even taking him yourself is a very real possibility if you want to consider that.

Is there any other activity that he's interested in (even of it's something he usually does on his own like comics or gaming) that could be encouraged to find a group for? Really worthwhile to try to encourage some contact with some real boys and girls in an appropriate context.

  • That was my understanding, that Immich and PaperlessNGX run AI locally on your machine. That's why the server PC sounds like a fighter jet ready to take off for hours on end when a large library is first added.

  • Have I been?

  • For anyone interested: your have way more options for favorite game on Android than you think.

Emulation works great on modern phones. Eden emulator runs Switch games and some work very well with just touchscreen controls (e.g. Into the Breach).

If you're ok with on screen controllers or with carrying around something like an 8bit Zero 2or Micro, then you could emulate a mind-blowing number of consoles and games.

  • Used to be Slay the Spire for me. Now it shares the top spot with Balatro.

  • OK with emulation? Then start with the first Ratchet and Clank game and play through all of them in order up to the most recent one on Steam.

  • Just music? I can hear other stuff?

I listen to music daily and music is special..... But I can listen to podcasts and audio books and be happy.

  • I joined Lemm.ee too. Solely because it was second biggest. I wanted to avoid the default choice and still be in a big enough instance.... Which didn't matter after all because it died anyway.

Then I went looking for something that was hardly defederated from anything, was likely to survive longterm, have an active mod, have servers is Europe and didn't have an insane/cringe worthy name. Europe.pub seemed to fit the bill.

  • I wake up naturally, but still doped up. Almost always exactly half an hour, then it feels like the light comes on.

  • When I wake up, I know who I am and where I and there's no disorientation; but I cannot get myself out of bed for half an hour. I feel like I've been given tranquilizer medication. Need to keep hitting snooze on the alarm. I resent this because I could have slept an extra half hour if I could only wake up and go.... But I must go through this snoozing drama every morning. No matter how much sleep I get, my brain cannot be functional enough to get out of bed for that first half hour. After that I'm good to go and firing on all thrusters.

  • Same. Stopping following the news has been so great. The live 24hour news cycle is toxic and unnecessary. I've also come off all social media (other than Lemmy) and don't watch/hear live TV or radio. I'm insulated from the immediacy of constant content updates. The content I do still consume, I've turned off all phone notifications; so I see it when I intend to open the app rather than having my attention stolen.

I connect to the world through podcasts, reading and specific subscribed YouTube channels. It's refreshing to step away from the immediacy of having to know as soon as something happens. I find out on a podcast the next day or in a few days. I watch TLDR News on YouTube which does good explanations of current events a few days later (when information is available and the situation has developed). I'm going back to reading books and following a curated list of RSS subscriptions.

Tone down the immediacy of everything, avoid reactionary crap, avoid algorithm recommendations, be intentional in the content you're putting in front of yourself. Ithas certainly worked out great for me and I would recommend it.

  • 😄 thanks

I never notice the names of posters, but I've been looking through loads of self hosted stuff and clearly come across a lot of your stuff. This is the latest thing I've gone waist deep into and am enjoying. Glad to see you're trying to make this welcoming for noobs.

  • Fragmented communities is such an annoying problem in the fediverse.

  • There are so many hobbies that I enjoy isolated..... Home server, gaming, retro emulation, making electronics, podcasts, movies and TV shows. I'll always be up for sharing interests with those who are into the same niches.

  • Oh man, the gore videos. Forgot about those. That was thoroughly unpleasant as well.
