  • any recommendations for long-lasting phones?

for desktop computers it used to be acer (laptop) for me. i bought one in 2012 and it lasted close to 10 years, which i consider really long. even then, i didn't buy a new one because of hardware defects, but because the hardware specs were long out of date. i bought a new acer (laptop) in 2021 and it enshittified heavily, lasting only 18 months before i had to buy a new computer.

then i bought a thinkpad (laptop) and have been happy with it ever since. it's been running for at least 2-3 years by now and shows no signs of aging at all, even though it's already second-hand. great device.

  • Relying on turnover sales and nothing else.

The best way to grow the economy is to develop spaceflight. If you fly to mars, there's millions of acres of free real estate waiting for you. Time to construct and grow the market.

There's no more meaningful growth on Earth possible, because the physical limits have been reached. This effect has been predicted as far back as in 1970 with the report: The Limits To Growth. We're finally seeing the effects of that now.

  • From a macroeconomics perspective, the best way forward is to give people money (handouts) so they can buy more stuff. More consumerism -> hotter economy.

  • Smartphone companies are trying to push phones with planned-obsolescence on people sothat people buy new phones more frequently, and that's a bad thing for the consumers because they have to spend more money.

The best way to respond to that is if consumers prefer buying smartphones from companies who have produced long-lived smartphones in the past. That means if company A produces shitty, short-lived smartphones, people indeed buy a new smartphone after a short while but from another company B who is willing to develop better quality.

  • where are you from, if i may ask?

  • Also as a side note, i would recommend new Linux users to not learn the command line. Do not touch the command line if you're not sure what you're doing. Like with a knife, it's a powerful tool but you can also do a lot of harm with it if you don't know exactly what you are doing.

Everything that most people need (web browsing, writing emails, watching movies, making presentations) can be done with graphical programs only. You shouldn't ever need to touch the command line.

  • the thing with the moon landing (or spaceflight in general) is that it's very easy to verify for other countries since many of the satellites send a radio signal all the time and you can actually receive that radio signal from other sides of the world. this way, you know where satellites are (if they want to be discovered). so, we know Yuri Gagarin made it to space because of the radio signal, and the same would likely be true for the moon landings (although i actually hadn't checked so far).

  • i think their entitlement largely comes from the fact that they were one of the few generation who actually had very prosperous lifes (things getting better after the war but still no shitty wages we see today) so obviously (to them) they must have done something right. And that's why they try to share their great way of life (and doing things the right way) with everyone else, so everyone else can live a prosperous life too.

Problem is, their life wasn't good because of what they did. It was good because they met exceptional circumstances in the world's development where there was a lot of growth and innovation that actually improved people's lifes. they just happened to live through it; it's not their personal achievement.

  • imagine having the time to lie in the sun all day long, not having to work, and enjoy its warmth :)

  • four people disagreeing because they think if people's place in society is not tied to their productivity, then all the lazy foreigners are gonna come in and take our spot. only our heroic (self-sacrificing) eternal push to increase our bosses' pockets are enough of an excuse to consume oxygen and continue to eat (massive /s)

  • Mine even sold their nice old house to have a new smaller one

that's exactly what my mother would do.

she has this mindset that we need constantly changing products. she says it's like with clothing, if you always wear the same cloth, people will get tired of it and you need to buy new clothes all the time. she also says that spending a lot of money stimulates the economy. (she's actually right about this, only that it's her - no, our money that she's spending and the rich peoples economy where it's going to).

i hate these kind of people. in my experience, these are people who are unable to not buy unnecessary stuff and just be content with how things are today.

  • proud Debian user here :)

  • thanks!

  • i guess it's very similar :D

  • Yeah I'm personally tending to always separate data and processing.

Data means you have an underlying data source (in lemmy's case the set of all lemmy servers hosting lemmy communities), and a separate system that does search/recommendation based on the data.

The search/recommendation system would not store any data itself, but only filter and sort and process the data from the underlying servers and communities.

  • thanks! are multi-communities anything like sql virtual tables? i.e they appear as one community to the reader, but are the result of querying multiple communities

  • tags are (on other platforms) a part of a post's content. This means that every user creating a post has to attach every tag that is relevant to the post, which could be a lot of effort if there are many tags available.

It would also be interesting if other users (e.g. moderators) could attach tags to a post, i.e. the post exists independent of the tags, and the tags get applied after the post is created.

  • depends on whether i find them attractive

  • Even our language has been perverted. When we like something, we call it good - a word that is derived from god: we put it in god's vicinity. Therefore, it is instilled in us that everything we like must be close to god.

Satan isn't close to god but i still like them. How do i convey that in a single word?

  • does anyone know what the difference between OsmAnd and Organic Maps is?
