  • Maybe it's changed, but my experience with OCR is that it is not great at detecting nuances of punctuation.

  • Well, maybe a little. Em dashes and en dashes are pretty standard (and editorially enforced) in newspapers and academic journals. By length, every religious text is eclipsed by news and journal media on a daily basis.

  • The [email protected] community has a lot of information on how to do this. I got into it a couple years ago because I felt weird about google listening in on my lightswitch activity (and to steal TV). Now I have a nice set of services running that have nothing to do with media (and actually help me do more things legally, and in some cases better than before).

There are also software communities like [email protected] to help with tools to manage software better. I am not a fanboy or anything but I like that GrapheneOS allows any app to be installed without network permissions.

Other good ones to check out:

  • Also, you will need to do some preprocessing of your files before importing to immich. Something like this to fix the metadata. I can't remember which one I used, because there are a few out there.

  • Well, you won't like it. If you have very fast internet and a managed downloader, then you may be able to get all of the files. Google seems to throttle the speeds to make large takeouts almost impossible to download in the limited time allowed.

For this size of download, your best option is to get a subscription to a compatible service (Dropbox, etc.) To transfer the files, which will happen much more quickly than downloading yourself. Then download the files from that service at your leisure, and then cancel the service.

It's pretty backwards, but it's really the best option for large takeouts (over 5 gigs or so).

  • Cmon bro, just one more datum. That's all we need. One little piece of data and that's it. Cmon, please?

  • Like I said, you are nta in the situation. She put you in a horrible, life threatening situation. You acted out of fear and you did no harm. I just think it's important to recognize the harm that could have been done. Consider it a lesson learned and an opportunity to move forward as a wiser, and perhaps stronger person. Sending you love.

  • NTA it sounds like she has a very poor sense of humor and doesn't care who she hurts. Taking of a condom without your partner's consent is extremely f-ed up. It's a form of SA.

The only thing you did that rubs me the wrong way is asking about her citizenship as leverage. I understand you were acting out of fear due to a situation she created. Still though, it's pretty scary to be Latin right now and even more so if you're not a citizen. Still nta.

  • Perhaps they did not fully appreciate the implications of their actions. Much as Oppenheimer observed upon the completion if his life's peak effort, perhaps the people truly did not know what it was.

    I am become irk.

  • But... you get paid for it, right?

  • I'm more expressing frustration that they have been approached multiple times about fixing the broken blocking by either renaming it muting (what it actually is), or creating an actual blocking feature. The excuses they provide are nonsensical.

Blocking protects users. Why would a federated platform not want to protect users?

  • Well, the devs are also the major community moderators and admins on the ml instance, which was the largest for a long time.

They still treat it like their private walled garden.

I may be overreaching with my assumption about their motivations, but then again I may not.

  • Blocking on Lemmy is really just muting, and it should be called that.

A real blocking feature would be nice (it exists on other fediverse platforms).

The devs have said that blocking wouldn't do anything because everything is public, so the blocked user could still access the content they are blocked from but frankly that's bs. If that were true, then there would be no point of banning either, right?

Devs want a monopoly on the power to block people they don't like through the use of bans (and they claim to be all for the people).

  • I've found radicale more stable in my implementation, but both are very good and are pretty similar to use.

If you already have NextCloud/OwnCloud it would be a good to use the Calendar that is already built in, but it doesn't make sense to install those for a calendar when there are better options available.

  • FWIW, a lot of 19-year-olds experience infantalization from their parents. It sounds like you have a loving family who have been willing to fight for you to live your best life (even if they don't really understand how to do that).

They don't have much experience interacting with you as an adult, so they are learning, too. They have many times more experience interacting with you as a child, so it will take time for them to adjust.

  • You have a good heart and are stronger than you think.

Some of your instincts are exactly right, while some are a little off. You're right about finding better opportunities to meet like minded people in the city. Parts of Ohio are pretty progressive and open minded.

There are women who would love to get to know you, and that will only improve over time. As people get older and wiser, the stereotypical roles become less and less important, and what ends up mattering is having a caring partner who is capable of growth. That's you.

Last, yes, there are some people who might wish to do violence to anyone who is different. However, they tend to be cowards and opportunists and there are not that many of them. The point of terrorism is to make people afraid, because even though it's unlikely for any one person to be a victim, everyone feels like they could potentially be a victim.

It is extremely unlikely that you will personally be targeted with deadly violence just for who you are. It's even more unlikely to happen multiple times. The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to have situational awareness.

  • I set up mine through docker and it works great. I've switched from other CalDAV / CardDAV hosts and it really is the most stable and reliable.

  • Honestly, the folks at Merriam Webster are pretty amazing and I don't mind supporting them with a simple click.

Crowdsourced solutions are fine, but subject to armchair research and inaccuracy. If it really matters, I'd rather trust people who have studied and devoted their lives to being linguists.
