  • they will never be able to stop pacman -S linux.

    I use arch, btw

  • just deleted my account and all reddit apps. quit cold turkey. there's less on Lemmy. but I'm happier, and more productive 🙂

  • Why?

  • I heard two talks around 2001 or so. one by Wolfram, after which I swore never to use mathematica again. and one by stallman after which I switched completely to Linux and never went back to windows.

still on Linux 25y later. went from days when getting sound working was a challenge , to today when even obscure tablets work out of the box.

started with red hat. used Gentoo for about 5y. then debian for 10, and now arch.

went from the old "crux" and metacity, to openbox to fvwm to gnome to kde plasma

i remember the old days I was envious of Mac users for transparency and the present windows features, and I ran this utility called Skippy that would screenshot windows and present them... all these features are now built in to the wm now, so no tweaking needed

  • honestly on single user machines I uninstall a display manager. autologin on console, and put a few lines in my zshrc to start my wm automatically

  • DONATE!

Wikipedia made a conscious choice to remain free, ad free and neutral.

They get my money! Even if they don't need it.

  • honestly idk why people say the arch install is hard. it takes 30mins max. instructions are fantastic.

  • install Linux... I use arch btw

  • in my defense, Gentoo was harder to install than arch...

  • honestly I loved Debian stable. unfortunately I got new hardware, and Debian stable didn't support it. I hacked by on a combination of testing and backports for a bit. but it finally got too much and I made the switch...

  • oh lol. so I installed Gentoo in 2007 or so on an AMD K6. I set the architecture to 686. Cause it's a K6 right?

build failed after a day of compiling. tried again and the build failed again. finally I read the docs and there's an innocuous like saying all K6s are 586.

What a waste. switched to Debian after some 3y of Gentoo. switched to arch after 10y of Debian. been on arch 6y now...

  • how did she get this idea into her head in the first place?

one of the worst life ruining decisions a student can make is to rack up student debt, with no means to pay it off after graduation.

look at graduation statistics if they publish it. what is the employment rate and median salary of graduates?

Is the total cost comparable to the median starting salary?

if taking sense into ur daughter isn't possible, then maybe reason with ur husband based on finances?

  • they could make billions monetizing the site in various ways like adding ads, monetizing user data, paywalling, or pushing a political agenda

they made a conscious choice not to.

they'll get my donation every year whether they're rolling in it or not. they deserve every penny

  • IIRC u need mlocate or plocate...

  • i trust them less that AP but more than most other for profit news platforms. I appreciate that they are fact based and not much "spin" and analysis.

  • what desktop are you using? on kde/plasma, go to the power settings and it gives you an option to run a script when the battery is connected/disconnected

u can use that to systemctl --user start/stop syncthing

i use syncthing all the time on some 100gb of data. it's not much of a battery drain. ymmv

  • I've used both and completely agree.

i used fvwm for some 20 years. but when I switched to Wayland, I had to change window managers. I tried gnome first because it was the default on more distributions. works great as long as u use it as is . any customization is hard and needs gnome tweaks or some other extension...

kde plasma was just as light weight and completely configurable

  • honestly just go on eBay and buy whatever fits your form factor and budget. most modern laptop swill work for you and nonsense paying a premium to get one particular model

  • oof. no escape key. i bet there are no vi bindings either.
