  • Clarke's Third Law: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

  • I think it's a uniquely good topic to have in both places. I first learned about Linux on reddit in Chrome on a Windows machine. It really helped lower my barrier to entry to chat with people on a platform that was accessible to my skill level at that time. But now I'm really glad there are nice foss places to talk about it as well.

  • I am autistic, which you probably could have just derived from the rest of this comment. Questions like these are so terrifying to me. So I always have a fun fact on hand.

    "What's new?"

"I just learned that only female cats have a calico pattern!"

Then you can talk about cats instead of your life.

  • I have nothing useful to contribute to the discussion, but I would like to say this conversation feels like Thanksgiving at my in-laws' house.

My (uneducated) guess is that investing and doing business both tend to involve some amount of specialization, geographically as well as by domain and market, so a general purpose online setting might not be the place to go. Maybe classes at a local college or university or a conversation with a domain expert could be more suitable for your goals.

  • I have an irrational fear of this acronym. I think I'm worried I might accidentally recurse forever, and that will become the only thing I do for the rest of my existence.

  • Yes. Also your math checks out.

  • This makes me so irrationally angry. Where I live it's usually just 12 year old kids on the bus who forgot headphones but still want to listen to the narration of the world's shittiest tiktok videos rather than reading the captions. It's fine. I'm fine. Everything is fine.

  • Beautiful! Also I love seeing fellow exmormons on every random corner of the internet. It feels very validating.

  • I'm not entirely sure what people actually use it for, but I do regularly chuckle when I remember my (very manly man) father in law asking for help setting up his Pinterest account.

  • I'm not sure popular is the biggest goal right now. It would definitely be nice for federated platforms to gain a bigger user base, but while the tools are growing, it's really inspiring just to think that people are willing to invest the (low or no profit) time and energy into making the internet a nicer place.

  • My grandma (decades ago) always went the other way, she wrote "Mr. Sarah Smith" for my grandpa's name. Feminist icon.

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

What subscription services do you actually pay for and get value from?

  • It depends a lot on the person, but it always does me good to do something tactile after working all day on a computer. Cooking, baking, sketching, woodworking, Legos, hiking, that kind of thing. I've noticed it really helps me ground and be mindful.
