  • Any sort of normal life while working 60 hours a week isn't going to be easy. I don't think being a family man is the problem here. Maybe consider looking for another job that isn't as demanding?

  • That's all the Internet really is, in the end.

  • Lol I didn't notice till I read your comment.

  • Yeah, did other people's computers stop having power buttons or something?

  • Thanks for the tip. I wasn't concerned about using my real email when I signed up for Lemmy when Trump wasn't the president. Not sure if it's possible to change the email tied to your account.

  • Yeah, it's definitely not the cheapest sport. I've got a buddy in Texas who uses an app that finds him cheap golf for a like $10-$20 a round. Apparently if you don't mind playing at shitty courses in hot weather at 1:00PM on a Tuesday, you can play on the cheap.

  • I've been golfing (yea, I am aware that the majority of Lemmy hates golf) a lot more recently. I enjoy that it's something that can be done with people of varying skill levels while still being fun. Ultimately, the competition is just with yourself to keep improving.

  • Until it's time for layoffs

  • The key to a good career in IT is to not have everything run too smoothly. If your systems have 100% uptime, it's easy for people to forget that you exist and are needed. The occasional bug reminds them that their lives would collapse without you.

  • "Look just because we control all three branches of government, have replaced compent government workers with loyal ones, tried to overturn the last election we lost and are working to ensure we'll never be able to lose another (assuming our plan to incite riots doesn't work so we can just declare a national emergency so we don't have another election), have created a secret police to snatch people off the streets, are prosecuting our political opponents or anyone that we deem to be not loyal enough, are removing press credentials of journalists and trying to force news outlets to sign agreements to what that can report, are using the FCC to silence voices of dissent, have sent in the military to occupy our own cities, have had friendly oligarchs purchase traditional and social media companies to silence critics and push our own propaganda, are using government resources to push partisan messages, have declared anyone that disagrees with us as anti-American, are using our military to sink civilian boats and murder the people inside, are ignoring orders of judges who don't rule in our favor, let our oligarchs choose which government programs to axe, created our own cryptocurrency to facilitate bribery by foreign nations, have declared anti-fascism to be terrorism...

    doesn't mean we're fascist!"

  • Not sure why, but this image wasn't showing for me in Voyager or when I tried to open it on the web. I was able to get a thumbnail loaded in Firefox, so here's what it says in case anyone else is having the same problem.

The dumbest person you know is currently being told "You're absolutely right!" by ChatGPT.

  • I browse exclusively on my phone, so deleting reddit apps and installing Lemmy apps was the biggest step for me.

I primarily browsed All, so setting my default sorting to All Top 12 Hours was key.

Finally, I made a point to comment and post more. This is where Lemmy beats Reddit hands down in my opinion. You can comment on posts that are hours old on All and still have meaningful discussions. Trying that on Reddit is like screaming into the void.

Edit: I also forgot to mention that I upvote almost everything. If you made a post that I read and it's not complete trash, you're getting an upvote. Same with comments. I upvote almost every comment I read - especially ones in response to my posts or comments. I feel like it let's people know they're being seen.

  • I've had to enter applications into Workday for my last two jobs - but that was also applying for things through my network so not just blindly applying.

Wouldn't removing companies that use Workday for hiring reduce a huge chunk of positions people might be interested in?

Or is that hiring really at such a bad state right now that it's not worth someone's time to apply anywhere that uses Workday?

  • Well played

  • Thanks I appreciate the info!
