  • After some investigation, we have defederated from both instances. I created a post in the Agora community in case people want to discuss it further: https://sh.itjust.works/post/35952149

  • I'm not sure this is a question of ethics. It's a question of whether you agree with a particular parent's world view. A good parent tries to set their child on a positive path in life, and they are going to pick a path based their personal knowledge and beliefs.

Even if you try hard not to "indoctrinate" your child with any particular world view, they will still see you as a model for what to believe and how to behave. You will tend to be your child's baseline for what "normal" is, at least early in their life. Your beliefs and behaviors will affect your kids whether you want them to or not.

Springfield is privately owned by an American family.

  • Rain falling on a glassy smooth lake.

  • It can be a very interesting conversation starter. I love hearing about the places people grew up, and how they ended up in the place they currently live. It's a much better topic than the small talk about work or TV shows or whatever else people discuss the first time they meet.

  • In America, you first become a legal permanent resident (we would say you have a "green card"). Once you have lived here for five years then you can apply for citizenship. The whole process is slow and can be somewhat arbitrary.

Another option is to enlist in the US military. After serving for several years you can get preferred status for citizenship.

As others said, this is a difficult time to be an immigrant in America. The current government is arresting and deporting legal residents based on flimsy accusations. You should consider waiting for Trump to be gone, or look at other countries.

  • Also at the AMC huts up in the Presidential range of New Hampshire. If you stay overnight in winter, there is no lingering on the pot.

  • The folks that host the toast.ooo instance have run an event like that for us the past two summers. Check out [email protected] to see last year's result, and watch for news about the next one.

This reminds me that I need to plan some art for the next event!

  • At work I usually need to have multiple windows up, so no one window spans the width of the display. It's often nice to have two documents side-by-side instead.

  • One of your posts triggered our automod, and it gave you an instance ban from sh.itjust.works. When a user is instance banned they also get banned from every community they have interacted with on that instance. Or at least that's how Lemmy worked at that time; we have since upgraded and I don't know if the behavior had changed.

Upon review, the automod action was clearly a false positive. You were unbanned, which unbanned you from all of those communities.

  • Tbh, I copy-pasted this from a health website. As far as I know, dried and canned beans are comparable. The biggest difference is that canned beans usually have added salt, which a lot of us could probably do without.

  • Yes. About 75% of Google's revenue is from ads. Most (all?) of their free products exist to feed the advertising business in one way or another.
