  • I feel like this shit is cyclical. Like, we've been here before and we'll be here again.

The question is: are we ever going to evolve past this nonsense before we go extinct. Historically speaking, the answer has always been "probably not"

We're just getting closer and closer to the end so it's more frightening now, I feel.

  • "years later" does not matter in my case because it wasn't that many years later—l probably played it only 3 or 4 years after release, and I don't play western action RPGs or stealth games. I think the first Assassin's Creed is the only Ubisoft game I played, for example, and it surely did not influence any of the games I actually play: Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, Hellsinker, or Guilty Gear.

Pretty sure I would've had a problem with it on release because it's shitty repetitive design.

  • Man, this is nearly every mainstream game for me: Fortnite, Minecraft, RDR, GTA, God of War (2018), Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us, Uncharted, Valve's The Orange Box, Insomnia's Spiderman, any From Software game except maybe Bloodborne, and I could keep going.

And I'm not saying any of these games are bad, they just never grab me enough to want to beat them or play them for extended periods, so I concluded they're not for me.

If it's not for the immense joy I get out of Japanese action games, fighting games, and shmups, I'd probably not touch video games at all.

  • OMG, it's so boring 🫠 I got like halfway through and concluded nothing could make me keep going.

  • I got one! The very first Assassin's Creed when it came out!

My childhood friend would NOT shut up about it! He would talk over and over again about the lore, show me extended cutscenes, videos, sent me lore theories, it was a whole thing!

Years later I finally get to play it and holy shit, what a disappointment… the entire game is just the same 3 missions over and over again… like no effort into hiding anything… literally the same 3 missions copied and pasted ad nauseum with different enemy names. I'm still shocked he sat through all of this bullshit to get to the awesome lore he went on and on about for weeks.

Bonus story with the same friend: we were talking about Devil May Cry and he said "I wish I could find another game like it…" and I noticed he said "game" and not "games" or "franchise" so I asked "Did you play the sequels? DMC3 is incredible!" and he goes "What sequels? I'm sure it's only one game…" and I swear I screamed at the realization he's talking about the reboot DmC: Devil May Cry and had no clue the original franchise even exists 😂 That was right after DMC5 came out too, which's wild.

I recommended starting with DMC5 because the story isn't great anyway and DMC1 or even DMC3 may feel a little dated. He ignored my advice because he wanted to experience the story from the beginning, picked up the HD collection, hated both DMC1 and DMC3 because they felt too stiff, and never touched the franchise again.

  • Fuck, I don't like most video games so I can throw a rock and hit one, but I'm gonna go with the genres I like just to make it interesting.

Fighting games: Mortal Kombat—I'm sorry, I like the hyper violence as much as the next guy, but the gameplay doesn't do it for me at all. Entertaining to watch, but it stops there for me.

Action games: Suda51 overall. Like, play No More Heroes but steer clear of the rest. It's mediocre combat wrapped in nonstop nonsense.

Shmups: ZeroRanger. I can't stand that game.

  • Yes! Action RPGs and I ignore all the RPG because, despite my thorough research, I've been bamboozled by COMBO MAD videos.

Fuck you, NieR:Automata—I'm not collecting 5 mushroom and 3 pyrite or whatever else you want me to collect. I paid for an action game and I'm getting one!

  • Can we not use "roguelite" and "arcade" in the same sentence? Roguelite is the anti-arcade.

Arcade games don't reward you with permanent power ups for losing runs, that's just modern gaming nonsense, which you can enjoy, just get your terminology right and don't mislead people.

    Beat'em up != arcade.

  • For my money, Robotron 2084 and Smash TV are still the best 2 twin-stick shooters of all-time. Recently, we've had games like Assault Android Cactus+ and Nex Machina come close, but the OGs are still untouchable, IMO.

  • why I would keep playing it over my beloved Nioh 2

Quick question about the combat in Nioh and Nioh 2: how much of it would you say is action (combo system + combat mechanics) vs. RPG (gear and stats)?

I'm more of an action guy and don't typically have a lot of fun with action RPGs or souls-likes, so I was wondering if it's action enough for me.

Examples of the games I didn't enjoy: The Surge, NieR:Automata, and Scarlet Nexus.

  • No More Heroes because why not. I still maintain it's a little overrated, Suda51 does not seem to have any interest to top it, and I'm not a fan of the busywork between boss fights, but it's still an arcade-y fun game to play and replay, and I'm happy I can replay it on PC now.

I would've enjoyed it a lot more had it been as linear as Furi, minus the walking segments, but it's alright as is.

  • Catherine is also $4.99 for anyone who likes challenging puzzle games.

  • Same here. Only 4 for over $10: The Wonderful 101, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes, and NieR:Automata.

    1. Hellsinker at $4.99.
    2. Catherine Classic $4.99.
    3. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax at $8.99.
    4. Vanquish at $5.99.
  • Graze Counter GM this week.

It's easier than the typical shmup, but still plenty of modes and difficulty levels for anyone seeking a challenge.

It's fun, but not exactly Hellsinker or Crimzon Clover—I don't really expect to be replaying it forever. The typical run is also shorter? It took me 20 minutes to 1CC vs 35 minutes for Crimzon Clover.

I'd recommend grabbing it for less than $5, but I wouldn't say it's a "must play" shmup.

  • So in attempt to expand my taste and library, and against my better judgment, I picked up 4 games over the past 2 months I wouldn't typically pick up: Death Stranding, The Surge, Scarlet Nexus, and NieR:Automata.

    I regret doing that.

I hate RPGs so much. They are so boring. My personal idea of gaming hell is fetch quests, escort missions, item farming, skill trees, and grinding XP.

Death Stranding: I suppose in the grand scheme of things, it's not that bad, and I actually had some fun collecting resources to build bridges and whatnot. Also, it's nice to boot up the game and realize someone else finished that bridge you've been trying to build. Driving can be fun too.

Game definitely overstays its welcome though… and I couldn't give a rat's ass about the story. There's no scenario where I can see myself revisiting it.

The Surge: God, I should put all the clips I have of all the buggy and awkward combat BS I ran into in this game. It's just sad.

I hate souls-like combat. It's so slow, all the skill goes into character builds, and this game's take on it doesn't exactly shake it up. I felt as if I was using 5% of my brain in every combat situation. A lot of wait-and-bait over and over again, and I just can't see myself ever enjoying this. Never revisiting.

Scarlet Nexus: This one actually tries harder to bring action mechanics and ideas to an otherwise RPG experience, but goddammit the RPG bogs it down so hard. And that last stretch of gameplay was insufferable, by-the-numbers RPG BS. Spongy, high-leveled enemies for days, which aren't even that difficult to beat… just chunky health bars, which seems to be action RPGs only idea of challenging combat: chunky health bars with big, often quick, attacks that can 2-shot you—once you figure out how to deal with the attacks, it becomes nothing but a battle of endurance. Just mundane, repetitive shit.

I may revisit to play the second campaign and 100%, but most likely will not.

NieR:Automata: OK, so this one has an OK combat system with combos, animation canceling, launchers, parries, counters…etc. but all of it is locked up behind a whole ass Chrono Trigger game, and none of it matters if you don't level up and dish out higher DPS anyway; otherwise, it's yet again another battle of endurance. Fun locked up behind misery.

It's also a nearly infinitely replayable RPG, which I find nightmare-inducing.

For the first time ever I have a "Regret" section in my library… goddammit. I will, however, still give Nioh a shot at some point. This will be the last step I take outside of my comfort zone for a long while. Back to action games, fighting games, and shmups—games I actually have tons of fun playing and can infinitely enjoy.

  • Damn, that's unfortunate. I'm glad Steam is cooperating though—a lot of platforms would try and bury this.

I hope this ends up being a blessing in disguise for them. Heart-wrenching to lose 10 years to a project and see little return because of a bug you're not even responsible for.

  • Conan did a Clueless Gamer playing it and the game crashed halfway through 😂 Not even making it up, it's on YT.

  • TIL broken is a premium feature 😂
