  • Oh shit! I forgot one from another job.

One of the busboys walked into the office, found no people and a satchel with about $30,000 in cash, picked it up and walked out, clocked out like normal, went home.

Guy SHOWED UP TO WORK THE NEXT DAY. Just assuming I guess, they won’t have cameras or anything, if I just don’t say anything there’s no way they can know who it was and they’ll probably just move on if I play it cool.

I guess the management was pretty aware of his level of planning skills because they had cops waiting at the restaurant at the time of his scheduled starting time and he was taken away in cuffs, presumably not to return for quite a long time.

  • Another:

Big awful dude starts working, among other issues he was SUPER upset that the girls at the gym are allowed to have their own separate area to work out where he can’t ogle them, he felt this was grossly unfair and was angry about it

So anyway my boss goes back to the truck to get something, at like 9 in the morning on the job site, opens up the back, the ENTIRE truck is filled with weed smoke which billows out because big awful dude is in there getting high. Boss is upset, obviously, but big awful dude is just laughing

I think they had to finish out the day with him but the boss was definitely irritated about it

  • Guy found a gun in the customer’s stuff

Guy starting waving it around and playing with it, pulled the fuckin trigger, almost shot one of his coworkers

Cops came, guy said he was moving a cabinet and it went off which obviously no one believed, somehow he wasn’t arrested, idk

Guy was fired over the phone before he left the customer’s house

  • I don’t disagree with any of that… the only part I was taking issue with was saying “there is a level of truth” that the armed forces of both sides are working for safety of both sides.

If the IDF stopped killing innocent people, it would dramatically increase the level of safety in the future for the loved ones of the soldiers. And likewise for Hamas.

I mean obviously having 0 Israeli military isn’t gonna work; I do get what you’re saying. But put it this way; if Hamas had disappeared entirely on October 6th, everyone on all sides would be a hell of a lot safer today.

  • without the auctions of their army their home will be at risk

Without Hamas’s recent actions, the home of the Palestinians would be at risk?

I think you gotta recheck your math on that one

And of course the same thing applies to Israel; without the IDF and settlers’ actions in Palestine, there wouldn’t have been an October 7th in the first place.

  • Yeah. I wouldn’t invest yourself too much in it. But yes, depending on things it might be worthwhile to just offer to let him put his money where his mouth is, if he’s super sure about things.

  • Offer to bet him money about the outcome of some real world event that is contingent on the way he is claiming that things are

IDK how you can apply that to AI; that’s not the best one. But you can bet that there are no workers dying of heatstroke in Amazon-supplier warehouses. You can bet him that Trump has agreed to honor the results of the election. Etc etc.

It’s very easy to just make statements at each other. If you offer to back up your statements, then he can either refuse (in which case it’ll be harder for him to say he’s definitely right and you’re definitely wrong), or agree and then one or the other of you will learn something.

It’s up to you. You can also just let it go. But if you want to prove him wrong it is easier to do with questions and real-world actions than it is by coming up with the perfect statements. As you’ve discovered, he’s not obligated to react to statements any way other than how he’s decided to react to them.

  • Also, export your DBs first, and snapshot the export instead of the raw DB files

  • Yeah. Dates where something HAPPENS are in my experience an S tier idea. Walking around the park, playing a game, interacting in some way. All good things. Like I say, getting buzzed and playing ping pong and flirting was fuckin magic. But both of us being in our go karts with helmets on and 0 interaction and the stress of “wtf I am going way too fast what if I crash this thing I hate this so much” is a little bit less of an S tier idea. Definitely for a first date at least.

  • I wanted to take a girl out. But I wanted to do something fun. I was sick of getting coffee; watching movies is worse. It’s just fuckin awkward. I had taken a girl some time before for beers and ping pong one time, and we had a fuckin BLAST. And so, I thought to myself, what is fun? Like ping pong fun? I know! Go karts are fun! Let’s do some go karts!

And so for my first date with this poor girl we went to a go karts place and got in our little go kart suits and raced go karts around the track. That was the day that I learned that not all girls like go karts. Idk; she thought I was unique I guess; she tried to have a good time and we kept seeing each other after. But she referred to the go karts date as her “trauma” and regularly gave me shit for it after, and for my general lack of any kind of adult understanding of women or life in general.

    TL;DR apparently I am 12 years old I guess

  • Yeah, it’s going to be tough. It looks like they’re using custom software for it, which means basically the most realistic path to get there would be to toss the site and switch to something like Wordpress which I am guessing they don’t want to do.

  • A lot of the best communities to be in have a barrier to entry

The community of pilots, the people who work in medicine or on floor X, the people who are proud of what they can accomplish and recognize automatically that the value of the interactions they have are not worthless.

Idk how you bring that to the online space. But it is missing, yes. I like this essay.

  • What is the site?

  • Honestly I LOVE being able to have Ctrl and Cmd be different modifiers.

Ctrl-C is break, Cmd-C is copy. And so on. All the Unixy stuff respects Ctrl and ignores Cmd and vice versa for the Mac stuff. Honestly it’s the best keyboard setup I have experienced and the only one which never manages to irritate me.

(Personally I am fine without a dedicated copy/paste key; the only ones I like having dedicated keys for are things like volume up/down for which I’m not aware of a universally understood key combination for)

How about Navalny? Also what's your take on the Venezuelan election?

I'm not asking that implying that the answer will be any particular type of way, just curious what you think about those issues.

  • No, working-class people are 12% richer (inflation adjusted) than they used to be, and that's a pretty fuckin significant number given the obstacles of Covid and Republicans that were standing in the way. The numbers are, 32% gains, 20% inflation, equals 12% gain inflation adjusted.

"Keep complaining" in the sense of advocating for better, finding more people who will help you get those outcomes and trying to work out how to get them in charge, sounds great. "Keep complaining" in the sense of blaming the people who are fighting for you for not doing a better job, and implying that them trying to give you trillions of dollars and partially succeeding is basically the same as the people who want to end democracy (and also steal back that money and more), is stupid. In my opinion.
