I live on a very narrow street with a turn that the big truck can't get up. So a guy comes in a pickup truck to get it. I can't put too much out or else he'll refuse it. Happened a couple times when I was gutting parts of my house. I just drove around the city and found random dumpsters.
This whole area does not recycle I found out. We'll have separate collection for recycling, but it all goes to the same dump in this county.
We only have garbage, and "recycling". Nothing else.
That's a far cry from how most people watch movies and TV though. Most everyone I know uses it through some sort of app on a device in their living room, like a smart TV, fire stick, game console, whatever.
How well does remote viewing work on jellyfin? I have a lot of friends and family that use my Plex, I've also had a lifetime pass for pushing a decade.
Like how easy is it to send an invite and the person be rolling with no technical setup from me? I just sent a Plex invite last week to my friend's brother who did some plumbing work on my house, dunno if I'll even ever see that dude again haha. I'm certainly not goin over to his house to set something up.
Or my dad struggles enough with it as it is, he's 70 next year so I get it. But that might be more of a problem with the Plex app on his ancient smart TV.
Some of my friends were "freegan". Meaning if meat or something was literally getting thrown away, or if they dumpster dived and found something that wasn't vegan, it was fair game.
Worked with this quiet dude for a couple years. Other than an excessive amounts of tattoos all the way to his face and neck, seemed like a pretty normal machinist / mechanic working at the factory with us.
Later, someone found a local news article from about 5 or 6 years ago. The cops had gotten called to his place over a suicide attempt and when they got there they found like a treasure trove of Nazi and Aryan nation shit, guns, knives, swords, fucking bomb making materials like acetone paint thinner and gun powder, diaries and notebooks full of fantasies about killing robbing and torturing people including minorities, teddy bears he bled on, drugs and paraphernalia
I guess his dad is a state trooper and got him off the charges, go figure.
Fucking christ, now the mini PC I cart around to look at drawings and schematics at work is going to freeze up and be slow even more than it already is for some crap I don't need
One thing I'd add is a whole house surge suppressor.
I saw the power lines arcing to either each other or the bamboo outside our house last week during a bad storm.
A whole house surge suppressor is only like $100, I'm gonna get one soon and install it. I saw it's best to install it as close as possible to the main incoming power lugs, one lead on each leg of the split phase 120/240.
A UPS will protect against surges but it's just a good idea with how many appliances and devices have circuit boards in homes these days. Like your furnace, oven, washing machine, game console, TV, etc.
I had an insane surge last winter so it's a long time coming haha. I removed up and half my circuits were off. I measured 170v to gnd on one of the legs. Power company and fire dept had to show up to fix it.
Power is ehh not great where I live.
Edit: for your point about a NAS failure. If that were to happen, since I use unRAID, I could just throw the disks on any Linux PC and my data would be fine.
I don't think many people in the 70-80 age range are out there committing crimes.
Also I had lead water pipes for years. Other than some stupid stuff I did as a kid like run from the cops to avoid an underage, I wasn't exactly committing any serious crimes. Crime is more often than not a result of the circumstances someone grows up in, like poverty, friends and neighbors, no opportunities, etc.
I've poked around on FMHY and most of the direct download sites are total garbage banner ads everywhere and popup galore with slow ass download speeds. Even the big public trackers like 1337x are whack in this regard. Yes obviously use an adblocker which takes care of that problem but if the ~average user goes at this blind they're gonna end up on some random ass sites from misclicks or get redirected or at best wait way too long for a download or it's in parts of an archive and they have to wait til tomorrow for another download etc etc.
I walk around the shop and bullshit with others, maybe clean or organize stuff. Or help build panels if I'm caught up on testing. We're so busy right now tho those days are kind of long gone. Currently working overtime indefinitely til like 2027 at least.
On paper I make around 70k, but with overtime and bonuses and field work it's more like 85k. This is the most I've ever made in my life.
I split my bills three ways with my fiance and a roommate. We live in a LCOL city and I bought a big old 1800 sq ft home during covid. Our mortgage is $860, so with utilities each of our expenses out the door is like ~400 per person. I have no debt other than the mortgage.
I've been banking cash to slowly renovate the house myself. Life is good.
So did Pittsburgh and then never replaced it. The only way to get around the city is via bus. There is a light rail system but it basically only goes from the suburbs to downtown
I just work a trade. Nobody is trying to network with the guy there to rewire an electrical system in a steel mill. Unless it's to poach to jump ship to a different job haha
