  • Journalists should be funded by the public, as they perform a public service, while simultaneously they should not be required to report favorably upon the state.

    And that's the crux of the issue, isn't it? You can't let corpos piss all over journalism to turn it yellow, and you can't let a state-run press dictate the citizen's world view.

    Information wants to be free, and that's realistically the only way it can work.

  • I agree. This time, it's actually different. Big name streamers and YouTubers are showing their support. Not just people in the tech industry, but random channels like EmKay and PewDiePie.

    Linux is better than ever. Steam is a breeze. Wine support has never been better.

    Meanwhile, Windows has more nasty surprises, underhanded backstabs, and security nightmares than ever before.

  • People dislike having to educate the same basic lessons over and over again, when it is very easy to search why tariffs are bad. It is not a community where people are going to spoonfeed you information that you didn't even directly ask for.

    The simple answer is because we live in a global economy and you can't possible make everything that needs to be made in a single country. The more complex answer can be found by reading articles about it. Take this one, which was the first hit I found on a web search:

  • Remember that most Christians have been such their entire lives. This programming is deep, and more strongly cemented than their critical thinking skills.

    The same applies for Republicans. They have been Republicans all of their lives, watching Fox News since they day they were born.

    Also, that kind of programming, religions, outright cults, Fox News, they all focus on discarding critical thinking skills as much as possible. Nowadays, they are targeting empathy, too.

  • Perhaps not the most related, but it is sort of funny for The Intercept to cover this when they led to Reality Winner going to jail because they didn’t follow basic journalistic protection of sources.

    It's absolutely related. I will never trust that name again because of what they did to Reality Winner. And Snowden. And many others. They have a shit track record, and should get out of the business of security reporting.

    How long did we kick the foundations out of the US dollar when we got rid of the gold standard, and just let it float on speculation and feelings? What, 60-70 years now?

    How long has the stock market existed on the whims of people's feelings over cold hard statistics and long-term analysis?

    Markets have been ignoring reality for many decades.

  • YSK that JetBrains IDEs do not remove old share and cache files from the previous version when upgrading. Every folder includes a local LLM, plugin executables, and old search indices. They go unused.

  • This is an example of what I feel is a watering down of this YSK forum. Knowledge like this is so esoteric as to be useless to a vast majority of the people here. JetBrains develops programming tools, and this post should go into a programming forum.

    I've found that as long as you put YSK in front of the title, you can post any damn thing you want here. There's barely any moderation against the type of posts that are brought here. It's just a place to put a post in a high-volume forum, so that it gets at least triple-digit upvotes.
