    Brilliant.

  • obligatory: https://qntm.org/abolish

Before I read this article, I also thought it would be a great idea to get rid of timezones entirely and just use UTC for everything. To quote from the link, (please forgive me for being lazy and not formatting it correctly)

Abolishing time zones brings many benefits, I hope. It also:

    • causes the question "What time is it there?" to be useless/unanswerable
    • necessitates significant changes to the way in which normal people talk about time
    • convolutes timetables, where present
    • means "days" (of the week) are no longer the same as "days"
    • complicates both secular and religious law
    • is a staggering inconvenience for a minimum of five billion people
    • makes it near-impossible to reason about time in other parts of the world
    • does not mean everybody gets up at the same time, goes to work at the same time, or goes to bed at the same time
    • is not simpler.

As long as humans live in more than one part of the world, solar time is always going to be subjective. Abolishing time zones only exacerbates this problem.

  • thanks, I see now. really well made response video.

  • Sabine Hossenfelder - they have positions that cause hurt to people

Can you elaborate on this? I haven't really watched much of her content, so I am not quite sure how she's causing hurt.

  • No kidding. However I did sort of forget what the conversation was about.

  • You should try out these so-called ear clip headphones (aka clip on buds). I got this pair at a thrift store for ~US$3 yesterday. They latch on to your ear on the outside and do not go deep into your ears. Great for tight earussies or for earussy periods.

  • I followed most of your guide, and my phone battery is lasting me upwards of 5 hours of screen on time since I applied your secret sauce. Never mind the ridiculously low data usage.

Can you please give a link to this guide? Thanks.

  • On top of it, they have lied about testing. https://i.imgur.com/woNxPhx.jpg

Yeah, no. Pretty sure that's just a rando with GrapheneOS logo as their avatar. The way they talk doesn't sound like the dev to me, and I also don't think the dev would ever misspell a word like "cellular" as "cullar".

  • Those are awesome!

  • I'd be interested in seeing, for example, from which instances the voters are distributed.

That would be interesting indeed! I heard that if one hosts their own Lemmy instance, they can see who voted on every post. Don't have that for now though.

  • I kind of see your point. The information we have is not sufficient, and we cannot really know how much of the Lemmy userbase cares about this issue.

  • [...] is that most votes happen because of a title. People scroll past, see a title, and vote based on that.

Wow, now that I think of it, that is indeed how I vote most of the time.

Thanks, I will seriously consider opening a community.
