  • The american government was designed to serve exactly the people it’s still serving (rich merchants and landowners). It’s working extremely well, they just lied to you about what it was designed to do.

  • I want to hike to Mordor

  • I see where you’re coming from. I think as the fediverse grows it will naturally start to specialize more like you describe reddit having done in the past.

  • In this case the community is “funny” so posting funny lines from comedians seems pretty on topic to me, am I missing something?

  • I’m predicting a colosseum fight or something for that america’s anniversary celebration executive order. Trump loves the UFC/WWE

  • Probably not the lowest cost possible but connect by t-mobile (prepaid) is a reliable option for $15 a month in the US

  • Not usually. I’ll add a bit next time to see how I like it!

  • I love stew! It’s important to cackle like a witch as you add ingredients to your stew pot.

    Easy and cheap veggie stew:

    Chop:

    • peeled russet potatoes
    • Yellow onion
    • Celery
    • Carrot (frozen is fine too)

    Add:

    • bay leaves
    • black pepper
    • Cayenne pepper if your a bit sick and need to clear you sinuses (it’s potent though, add slowly to taste, it’s fine to add directly to you bowl instead)
    • Dry basil
    • a bit of turmeric if you like it and have it on hand
    • salt
    • If you can afford it veggie broth or some ‘better than bouillon’ seasoning is nice but if not, add more onion and spices.

The proportions depend on your batch size and preferences and can be pretty flexible but for a medium pot or a spaghetti pot that’s about 1/3 full I usually use 2-3 medium russet potatoes, 1-2 yellow onions, 3-4 celery stalks, a handful of carrots (2-3 fresh ones), 2+ bay leaves. Everything else to taste. Add salt last after you’ve added vegetable broth or water to ~2 in above the soup contents and brought to a boil. Simmer for about 20 min.

  • I still support the Vichy comparison, great take

  • …collapse of the longstanding institutions of a great democracy…

Yeah a ‘great democracy’ that was designed to serve landowners and merchants and scans through to make sure huh, yep, still seems designed for landlords and corporations.

  • Maybe to stock people since they panic at everything but it’s way up overall

  • As a general rule I think it’s best to take ideas on their own internal merit without attaching yourself too strongly to particular figures. People are fickle but a well founded idea can transcend its author.

That doesn’t mean you should esteem someone for having one good thought or withhold your contempt of their general character though.

  • I think reddit skews older and therefore so does Lemmy, but the more younger people who join the more likely we are to get a bit of a snowball effect going! Hopefully some others in your age demographic see this post and suggest something. What are some things you feel sets gen z apart? My younger sister would be considered on the older end of gen z but I don’t think her interests are particularly standard.

I do think forum style communities like reddit and lemmy/kbin are more focused on particular hobbies which span generations more easily. For example I have a background in audio and spend a lot of time on the Gearspace forums which skew much older than me, but that doesn’t make me feel particularly out of place except for the clear class divide (like people recommending really expensive gear to newbies or talking about how they write from their mountain retreat).

  • I bought the Runtastic six pack abs trainer and butt trainer (one time $5 fee for each app) several years ago and have gone through each program a number of times with excellent results. Especially considering the workouts were only about 10-15 minutes each (so 30 minutes to do one of each). These apps have been discontinued for new downloads but I bet you could fine similar apps for free or cheap that don’t require subscriptions.

  • A lot of rich people like to feel like they’re getting an ‘authentic’ experience on vacation so they visit remote villages and hire locals (who are usually well versed in entertaining rich tourists) to give them ‘authentic’ tours and taste the local booze. I doubt this is what Twain was talking about though.

  • hehehe they thought

  • It’s a social media platform people are signing up in anticipation for the TicTok ban that is notably also a chinese company.

  • The differences of opinion are still there in irl leftist spaces but it alters how it feels when you’re actively doing something. Online you only see the differences in opinion but the real leftists aren’t just arguing details online (though they do that too) they’re running food banks and organizing housing cooperatives and coming out en masse when someone is being evicted. They’re putting together food packages and sending books to inmates. They’re hiking out into the desert to leave water for migrants and waiting by the train tracks to toss food up to travelers.

Bickering about details online might seem ridiculous to someone who isn’t involved but for the actually active leftists that part is only a sliver of their leftism and it’s not necessarily a bad thing— it’s very hard to imagine the world organized other than it is and one way we can be prepared to make the right decisions together when gaps appear is to discuss everything from every angle. I’m not going to pretend all the stuff online is in good faith and I suspect a good percentage of keyboard warriors who are not actually involved in leftward movement, but I do think in the context of real activism the bickering makes more sense.

  • Very interesting! What about others sensations like falling or feeling a surface?
