I mod a worryingly growing list of communities. Ask away if you have any questions or issues with any of the communities.

I also run the hobby and nerd interest website scratch-that.org.

  • Contrast paints are a new formulation that's gotten popular in the market. They are like a glaze with wash properties. The idea is that you can simply paint them over a white priming and you're done, all the shading is done for you.

I find the average results I see in real life to be underwhelming. The colors can often be patchy especially if applied to large flat surfaces like for example Space Marine armor. What is more is that contrast paints only contain one shade of pigment and the darker or lighter portions on the model just relate to pigment concentration. I prefer to shade and highlight by adding different colors to the base paint. I find that it offers more control and greater range over the colors. The control relates also to how highlights are placed. Many people either skip them entirely by relying on contrast paint, or they copy the modern GW Box Art style which highlights pretty much every single hard edge rather than trying to give the impression of a light source. I like to give the impression of a light source.

For traditional touches, blacklining is a practice of tracing a thinned black or near black paint on the borders of different objects of the mini to help give them definition. This can be especially important when painting in bright and saturated color schemes to keep them from assaulting the eyes with too much brightness.

I underpaint, which is related to mixing for shading but means to paint certain areas a particular color in preparation for another color to support it. For example Caucasian skin is usually a red-brown or purple before the first actual flesh tones go on.

Sometimes it's just things I consider absolutely basic like basing a mini at all in any way. All I my minis are based with texture in some way (any you see in my history that don't have basing texture were specifically requested such by other people) and have at least basic drybrushing or flock. A lot of people just paint the bases now, or simply just leave them bare.

I also like putting segmented colors, camo patterns, or other simple freehanding on minis. This draws a lot of attention in real life as many people are so used to just contrast painting that they never learn fine control and as such never even attempt freehand.

I do have a few paper copies of older painting books I reference along with various PDF scans. All the the exact paint recommendations are out of date, but the general concepts are still valid.

I partially blame army bloat and the FOMO treadmill in Warhammer 40k for creating unmanageably large armies that cause people to treat the painting as a chore to be finished with rather than something to enjoy and get better at.

  • I do miss physically owning media. A lot of physical media still decays, though, so not a panacea.

I prefer digital media that is locally stored. Many complaints I see about digital media revolves around DRM or a service's ability to remove media that you think you "own".

I think locally stored media solves that without taking us back to the days of a shelf of hundreds of DVDs.

I do own some physical media like certain very old PC games but only because there is no good digital option available that's more convenient.

  • Modern tabletop miniature painting is dominated by contrast paints and airbrushes. This is especially true of small time commission painters.

I personally only use my airbrush for priming, and only use contrast paints for intensely limited purposes like glazing. For the vast majority of my painting I use methods taught in the 80s and 90s.

I personally like the results, and I like to think my methods give my pieces a "voice" that helps me stand out from other local commission painters which deliver interchangeable looking results.

I don't dislike airbrushes (which I know were used by certain niche painters back in the day, but weren't in common use generally) or contrast paints. I know some people take the time to get good results with them, however I think the majority of people applying them do it in a sloppy manner and the effort it would take to prep or clean up the results to a standard I would accept seems like more work than just doing it traditionally.

  • All I've got is the tablet and the phone for work. Gosh either I'm an executive or not all workplaces and job types are alike.

  • I liked him in 28 Weeks Later. The movie itself had a lot of issues, but I think he was a good choice.

  • I feel fundamentally uncomfortable with sois vide using plastic.

  • I buy and play a bunch of old games from an EBay seller who sends both the original disc and a disc with a copy of the game that loads dosbox stuff or whatever else to make it work easily on a modern system without fiddling around. It's pretty great.

I have a bunch of strategy and sim games.

  • The last book I read was Monstrous Regiment, a Discworld book that had somehow slipped past me.

It was pretty good. It's more or less a stand alone book in the setting with some minor cameos by established characters. There is one conceit that the book runs on, which you'll likely catch onto early, but it manages to mix up how it uses that conceit to keep it fresh enough. The ending big action set piece is contrived even for Discworld action, but the book really isn't about the action anyway so it gets a pass. B+ book, one of the lesser Discworld books which still puts it way above most other books.

  • I had seen studies that say that training or even just daily walks can highly improve mood, but I had never heard that they fully cure depression.

The solution people are commonly offering helps then, even if it isn't a silver bullet. If a silver bullet existed that instantly and universally cured depression I'm sure people would offer that instead. People are offering the best they can to a stranger.

Despite the fact that not all people are capable of doing both.

If you go online and ask strangers, you're going to get general advice. If you have a paragraph of reasons why you can't do both, either, or a modification of the advice of exercise and therapist then I feel for you but aggressively rejecting generally helpful advice while looking for some other solution is putting the responsibility on random strangers to come up with something.

I'll add that while some people may not be able to do some of the common advice, I privately suspect that at least a healthy percent of the time that resistance to the advice isn't coming from inability to do it, or in the case of the exercise part to follow the spirit of the advice by being more active. If you truly have a chemical imbalance, a therapist is the person who can help and is qualified to talk about drug solutions.

Short of telling you to see that therapist to get actual professional help, and doing exercise which while it might only a partial solution is something that you can do right away, what exactly do you want of random people?

  • A slight tangent into spelling, but I think "milktoast" is perfectly evocative of the idea the user is trying to get across.

  • A little tiny pinch of salt in coffee can take the edge off the bitterness. It surprisingly doesn't make it taste salty, just less bitter.

  • If three people all have different terminal medical conditions, which are currently making their state of life excruciating, and will kill them shortly, and there is one healthy person who can be killed and their organs repurposed to restore quality of life and stop the medical condition to all of those people then utilitarianism says it is moral to do that.

Any answer saying that it is wrong to do that shows there must be a factor beyond need in the determination.

  • Isn't is supposed to be is.

  • [US] Any suspect that says "Am I free to go?" during an interview where they haven't been Mirandized, and then if they are free to go leaves immediately.

Or if they are not free to go and Mirandized "I demand a lawyer." and "I am asserting my right to silence." and nothing else. Playing cute games in an "interview" so you can get off some zingers at the cops is at best not going to make your situation worse. Very likely though, the longer you talk, the worse it will get. Therefore any technique that is giving up your right to silence and council is sub-optimal.

This footage doesn't catch the public eye as often because it isn't spicy. It's just boring. You want to be boring because the cops who booked you are not the right people to be spinning your side of the story to.

  • Airsoft has grown massively. While it is more of a whole day event, it fills that same niche but better in many ways.

Most lazertag places I remember seeing were inside or connected to arcades, and those really aren't a thing for kids these days either so it makes sense the lazertag places aren't as widespread as they used to be. If you're specifically going to travel to just do lazertag, you'll probably just travel to do airsoft or paintball.

  • I love Battletech, but I understand why it isn't for everyone. The crunch of of detailing armor hits and internal effects, and keeping track of heat sinks is all the kind of thing that appeals to a specific kind of numbers nerd.

Yes Alpha Strike exists, but it's relatively new and I think it exists as this weird thing that by stripping out the details takes away the appeal for the loyal crunchy brained people.

Further, the miniatures are really neat, but 28mm (or 32mm, whatever is happening with 40k scale creep these days) scale really allows people to paint and customize characters which is appealing to more people than relatively less characterful mech sculpts.

  • For video games, Full Spectrum Warrior.

It's got a unique third person-ish view where the player swaps between different fire teams or special units, and orders them. It looks like a third person shooter but is just a real time ground level tactical game. It's demanding but fun. It's the kind of game that Brothers In Arms, old school Ghost Recon, or Doorkickers players would love. I don't know why nobody really remembers it or why somebody hasn't made a spiritual successor.

  • The original version of Crysis is available right now on GOG and the EA store. PC isn't a single vendor ecosystem where the only store also owns the hardware to play it.

We also don't know who decided to pull it. I'd still wager it is unlikely Valve made a unilateral choice or pressured the game off the platform. Look at EA for answers.
