  • If Marx was alive during the Cold War and beyond, how would he react to the communist states that rose to power? Would he approve or disapprove of them?

  • He would almost certainly support them based on his support for the deeply flawed paris commune. The communist experiments of the cold war were absolutely not perfect and I am certain Marx would have opinions about their exact natures but it is doubtless he would support them. If he could put up with proudhonist he can put up with anything.

  • How do you objectively tell if a parents "I love you" is actually sincere, if they actually care about you? Or if the words are lies and they don't actually care?

  • I wasn't trying to suggest you were defending him and I apologize if it came off that way. My point was mainly that, while celebrating violence isn't a good look in polite society, it isn't morally abjectionable in an objective way and I won't fault people for it. Just as I wouldn't criticize a rape victim for celebrating their abusors death. While not as direct or severe as rape (hopefully), many people on this site were victimized by his rhetoric. Even if they weren't directly, maybe someone they loved was.

    To add to this, I also think that the reason so many of us in the west abhor this behavior is because we have state sanctioned and state monopolized violence. It is acceptable to celebrate this violence because it is done under the authority of the state, they are allowed to be violent to us and to foreign peoples and we are allowed to celebrate that. Many of us do because that violence is beneficial to them. People celebrate police and military violence all the time. What's horrifying, what we are taught to be horrified by, is violence done by us against the interest of the state. This cannot be acceptably celebrated. Maybe we shouldn't let it be so scary to us. Maybe that mentality is incredibly beneficial to the people who control our lives.

    Violence is a tool, it isn't good or evil. Sometimes violence is deeply liberating and I think it's okay to celebrate that. Independance days are a very common holiday and many of them were won through violence.

    As an aside though, I do condemn the murder of charlie kirk. Not because it was violent and murder but because it was adventurism and deeply irresponsible. Individual acts of violence like this, while gratifying, have proven to be detrimental to liberatory movments.

  • You can believe that if you want but I am not a moral objectivist. There is no "way" and I don't think he deserves our respect even in death. I'm not particularly bothered if it looks bad either.

  • Drinking coffee while or before reading helps me personally if it's not something super gripping (most non fiction lol). Honestly sometimes learning is like working out. Building a habit out of it is difficult at first and it is usually best to start slow but consistantly. Pick any book and just read a set amount of pages or minutes per day, stand up while reading it if you have to in order to stop from getting sleepy, just power through it as best you can. Eventually increase the amount of time you spend on it. Sometimes it happens naturally and you'll just want to keep reading one day, sometimes you have to say, it's been a few weeks and I should up my time by some amount.

    I really recommend picking a book on a topic that doesn't just interest you but is important to you. For me, political theory and indigenous history fill this requirement.

  • Idk much about vegan philosophy and it is a philosophy not a diet to be clear. However, personally I see it as stealing from the vultures. The vegan solution is of course, to limit roadkill to negligable levels by making cars a redundant and antiquated form of transportation.

    Also I wouldn't trust roadkill to be safe for consumption

  • A lot of podcasts use RSS, would recommend. I use an opensource app called Antennapod to aggregate them. It will even find them for you if you use the search function

  • There was political violence around Tian'anmen square on june 4th 1989 yes. This cannot be denied and no one is denying this, not even the CPC. The narrative around that political violence that we hear in the west is however, riddled with lies and intentional distortion for the purpose of propaganda. Here is a great video on the subject that is fully sourced if you are interested. Some of the source links are unfortunately 404s now, I'll see if I can find the articles referenced and make a followup comment.

    Edit: I have unfortunately found zero archives of the missing articles and my sleuthing skills are limited to searching the only 2 archive sites I know rn.
