  • Someone else mentioned the cooler too, so that's out for sure. To be honest, I never really thought about graphics in the traditional sense, but I do need something for at least Jellyfin transcoding. And maybe a small llm. Would it be better to get a dedicated GPU or CPU with integrated?

  • Thanks! Wasn't sure about the cooling, so that's good to know. And yeah, I didn't know if I actually wanted graphics or not. Whether integrated or a card. Actually, now that I'm typing this out, I do need something for Jellyfin transcoding at least.

There is a part of me that wanted to run my own small llm to go with home assistant, but I don't think that's really necessary.

  • Thanks! It has space for two more sticks, but I just assumed 32gb would be overkill for what I'd need and was saving it for the future. Good point on the other two.

  • Ooh, that's good to know. I believe the Meshify only has two 2.5" which means I'd need to figure out a solution for the other two I have. The "mesh" and airflow is what drew me to that case. How's the Define?

  • I've had AdGuard Home running in various places, but always struggled with getting it to show which device was making the call while also being protected while away from my local network. Just keeping the house secure wasn't a problem, but routing my traffic while out always seemed to cause problems. Moreso on the synology.

What's your use case look like?

  • Hey! My turn for the long delay. Are you still interested in the Dell r720? Turns out the idrac is bricked, which means a new motherboard according to Dell. I am still interested in the optiplex if you're looking to part with it.

  • I've got the external IP addresses down pat. I'm with you in that I've never quite figured out how to do the same with local IP addresses.

  • It's probably too basic, but Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke have always been my favorites, the latter of which was where I started.

  • Bluefin-dx is the more dev oriented version, and I think Bazzite has a -dx version as well. But I agree, I'm using Bluefin and love it for the containerization.

  • Yeah, I thought the main devs were Latvian 🤔

  • Someone else mentioned it, but another vote for Aurora-dx (-dx for the developer version). It'll give you the KDE experience without having to worry about your underlying system, leaving you time to work on software dev in a containerized environment of your choosing. Arch is great if you want to customize and tinker with everything, but given your parameters, I think not worrying about that bit will make your life easier as you focus on what's more important to you. As long as you reboot your computer from time to time, you'll always have the latest version and can rollback easily if something goes wrong.

And as is tradition with Linux, it's not like you have to use whatever you decide forever. Distro hopping is a time-honored tradition!

  • Another who loves Street Complete. Makes my evening walks less random. I love the idea of using open street maps, but the one thing keeping me on google is the real time traffic redirecting 🫤 I do use organic maps for hikes, it's great for offline. I just wish there were some better option for traffic.

  • It's not the exact same (a 1:1 replacement) but have you looked at Logseq as an alternative to Obsidian. It is open source and serves a lot of the same needs as a wiki-style editor, but may not be exactly what you need in Obsidian

  • There are dozens of us! But yeah, same.

  • I think Bazzite has a version that doesn't start in game mode 🤔 Or use one of the sister versions if you don't game often? Password on boot happens on both of mine, and coming back from sleep should be an option.

  • Not OP, but I've got Bazzite on my Steam Deck and Bluefin on my laptop as my daily. I'm rather loving the set it and forget it nature of it while still having plenty of room to play when I need to.

  • I just discovered bat and eza, which were already installed, along with fd though I haven't played with that one yet. I've really liked the first two at least

  • Welcome to distro hopping! If at some point in the future you want to try another out but don't want to start from scratch, there are ways to demo them to get a feel and see if it's something you'd like to take the effort to wipe and install.

  • And as someone who never closes tabs, I love their tab management, from organization to memory.
