  • Do you want my biased opinion or unbiased opinion on where to get unbiased information?

  • Right. The question is whether they can attach what they know to an identity. Depends on your threat model which goal you need to achieve.

  • sigh another imagined argument about these mythical “Americans” I keep hearing about.

Most Americans also hate this system haha. I mean, McCarthyism still has its effects to this day, and maybe the people I’ve met are not representative of the general population, but I literally haven’t met one American “in love” with capitalism. The most pro-capitalist argument you’ll get here is “well yeah capitalism has its flaws, but it’s the best we got”…which is a bullshit argument, and is in fact the same argument the south used to convince people to keep slavery around fyi.

  • Where is the lie? They don’t sell your data. That’s not how they operate. In fact, they want to keep your data as secure as possible so no one else can use it.

They build models from user data and basically sell those models to businesses. Models that can be used to manipulate behavior and distort reality.

Data brokers, on the other hand…they sell your data.

  • She is treating the relationship and trust as transactional. No bueno.

  • They knew. The lyft drivers always know.

  • It’s something they saw in a meme once and now they take it for fact.

  • “My prehistoric brain can only think in ‘binary’ and doesn’t understand that development of a successful threat model doesn’t (and often can’t) be perfect, but any incremental change to my behavior and online practices in a way to prevent sensitive information from being shared and potentially utilized by malicious actors is a plus.

Instead of thinking about all of that, I’m going to reduce the whole subject to a nice and neat logical fallacy of ‘online privacy is terrible nowadays, thus it doesn’t matter what I do’ “

  • It is all also very clearly stated in the information they must collect in order to provide their service. There should’ve been no surprises here, as you must assume that scenarios like these will happen eventually.

  • Pretty much. I see it basically as our masters arguing over the best way to rule the peasants. Do we give them some crumbs so that they don’t outright revolt? Or do we just go full steam ahead with exploitation with full on force and violence?

  • Self-diagnosed centrist: We need to compromise here. It’s the only way we’ll actually get things accomplished in politics. Kill half, and imprison the other half.

Self-proclaimed “realist”: They both suck equally as much

Political “philosopher”: Society needs to stop seeing everything in black and white. There’s nuance in genocide versus life imprisonment.

Undecided voter: I’m just not convinced yet for either. I see the merits of both. I need to hear both candidates’ policies in more detail before making a decision.

Old people: As long as my taxes don’t go up, I don’t give a shit what they do.

  • “I don’t have one” is what I typically say lol
