  • Well, I do have MBSE on the brain, but the idea here is more like a low-code/no-code environment with an ABSOLUTELY ENORMOUS "pit of success"... so large that even GenAI can reliably fall into it. Numbered tabs, you go left to right answering questions and fiddling with with prompts, paint-by-numbers for working software.

  • I imagine that it is theoretically possible to successfully vibe-code, but probably not with a conventional project layout nor would it look much like traditional programming. Something like your interaction primarily being a "requirements list", which gets translated into interfaces and heavy requirements tests against those interfaces, and each implementation file being disposable (regenerated) & super-self-contained, and only being able to "save" (or commit) implementations that pass the tests.

...and if you are building a webapp, it would not be able to touch the API layer except through operational transforms (which trigger new [major] version numbers]. Sorta like MCP.

Said another way, if we could make it more like a "ratchet" incrementing, and less like an out-of-control aircraft.... then maybe?!?

  • I've considered problems similar to this.

IIRC, what I landed on was (1) if I could only use a d-pad, I'd try pushing the characters deeper into a maze-like tree structure (three d-pad presses [even reserving the direction you came from] easily gives you 36 possibilities: a-z + 0-9... more if you have push best-guess into the closer intersections), and (2) if I had an analog device (like the joystick in your example) I'd go with something like dasher... but I'm sure you could get dasher to work with a d-pad too, but it would be sub-optimal, methinks.

  • I thought they already gutted much of AOSP. Like removing the dialer or contacts and stuff.

  • That stick is a fine line between order and chaos.

  • AFAIK it is an anime trope. I think it is called "sudden realism".

  • IIRC, I had a PC (since sold) that had secure boot permanently enabled from the factory. That is, in spirit, a PC with a "locked bootloader", but you might not even notice because many Linux distros have that Microsoft-blessed Linux loading shim... but it is still Microsoft inserting themselves between you and your hardware; they could decide in the next few years they no longer "support" Linux, hypothetically.

  • I would say simply to avoid buying phones from ad-companies, but more generally... if you buy hardware from vendors that respect ownership (i.e. that have user-unlockable bootloaders) then you don't really have to worry about this kind of thing, as even if the company turns evil later, you can probably flash the phone with a 3rd party rom.

  • Noticably? I imagine their skin imperfections would be twice as large... or maybe √2 as large?

  • Best "hack" I've heard is to NOT TRY to go to sleep. It is involuntary. It is not something you can will. The harder you try the further back it moves.

Instead, simply focus on creating an environment conducive to sleep (safe, warm, comfortable, etc.).

e.g. Try not to have an active going to bed ritual (such that a bunch of business abruptly ends with the expectation of sleep), but more of a "coming in for landing" ritual, where you need to do less and less until your mind decides it might as well sleep since there is nothing to do.

  • I don't know if this is what you mean, but I find that "Westworld" hits a lot harder post-ChatGPT.

I remember it taking a lot more suspension of disbelief on release, but now much of it falls into the realm of plausible.

Maybe not the "computable consciousness", but the glitchy hand-wavy "we don't know how it works either" aspect... at the time it seemed like a mcguffin cop-out, and now that's like all the new business models.

  • Yes, I touch-type, and use a kinesis advantage keyboard that makes touch typing "almost unavoidable" (as one blogger wrote). I also use the Dvorak layout, and get nearly 100 wpm without really trying (and using low-effort brain-to-keyboard data transfer is the way to go, imho).

  • IIRC, it opens a gui modal asking if you want to give the terminal permission to read the folder. Not quite the same, but still weird and jarring.

  • Imagine holding a null in your hand... hopefully they sent you only one, and not zero nulls, or worse... -1... and don't even get be started on imaginary nulls.

  • When you're stressing about an opponent, remember that you're hurting yourself and giving them an advantage. Don't do that.
