I don't read my replies

  • You can’t be an atheist without calling out religions for the hate, war, and genocide that they cause.

Yes you can! Atheism is not an ideology. You're talking about anti-theists and plenty of us non-believers don't wanna be associated with those people.

  • Growing up rural gives one a healthy respect for animals. I once knew a banty rooster who was known to have killed 2 snakes and a hawk going after his hens. I saw that rooster chase grown men and I did not laugh. I would have run from that feathery violence too.

  • Philosophers are always the first targets of anti-intellectuals. People genuinely believe that studding what's true about the world is a waste of time.

You can tell that this is a prejudice because the same people who think you shouldn't get paid for having useless knowledge will still hire economists.

  • Yea, laws are made up. So is currency, boarders, sovereignty, human rights, and democracy. Made up things are consequential.

  • There is no way to have a legacy Steam client that's not maintained but still must authenticate users, transactions, and downloads.

  • Firefighters and EMTs get a little extra glorification to make up for their salaries.

  • Joking about suicide is a red flag. As in an indication that something might be wrong. It can indicate that suicide is something that's on their mind often.

I would avoid these jokes in a professional setting because loosing someone to suicide is common and you're likely to crack a joke in front of someone who will not appreciate it.

  • In my opinion, bigotry is more like a cognitive bias than a wrong idea. That is it's extremely difficult to get that stuff out of your head, and the effective strategy is to acknowledge that you've got bias and try to correct for it.

  • Speaking as someone who's the default "tech" guy for older relatives, I'm glad M$ does forced updates.

  • You don't really hear about serial killers anymore.

  • CMV:

99% of self-identifying stoics are just dudes who watched a video on Marcus Aurelius and took away that holding in your feelings is a virtue actually.

  • Don't forget that there is a BIOS setting that allows VM to work faster. It's called virtualization. Search for the setting in your BIOS (it's called something different across manufacturers). It's usually located in a menu under "advanced CPU settings" or similar.

It's often switched off by default.

  • I feel like it's OK to demonize narcissism in ways that would be unacceptable ableism if you were talking about other neurodivergents or personality disorders.

It's just as blanket and vague as calling someone an asshole.

It's become such a pop-psych phenomena, I think it's time for clinical people to abandon the term to pop culture. When a diagnosis becomes a common insult, it's time for a new term.

  • No, $70 for the license to play a remake.

  • Hitting the saloon with Lenny in Red Dead Redemption 2 means consuming a dangerous amount of questionable liquors.

  • The idea of personal action vs. corporate/government action is a false choice. The government can force the corpos to stop burning the planet, but that will mean significant lifestyle changes for everybody.

It also means getting our shit together about immigration/ migration/ refugees. And not just in the US, but globally. A humanitarian catastrophe is assured otherwise.

    I'm not optimistic.

  • Some seem confused so: There was no organized effort to selectively breed enslaved people. While the slavers did get to decide who would have children with whom. And they no doubt chose individuals with "desirable" characteristics. This isn't the kind of multi-generational project that could possibly hope to select for traits.

The brutality of slavery may have had some selective pressure, but that was unintentional.

  • This is a core component of a corrupt system. Everyone needs dirt on everyone else to feel secure that they can screw you if you ever try to run against the grain.

Just look back at any of the police who get criminally charged. One of the charges against the cop will likely be "theft of state funds" or similar language. This means the cop stole overtime, which is so common as to be universal.

Another common example is tax-evasion under a dictatorship. Everyone in the ruling class does it, but run afoul of the regime, and off to jail you go.
