Modder, programmer, and all around tinkerer. Yes, I’m that New Vegas and Deus Ex guy.

You can also find me over at lemmy.sdf.org under the same username.

  • Seconding NewPipe. It's the easiest to get set up, and once you get it set up you basically never have to touch it again.

YouTube Revanced is more user friendly and has more features once it's set up, but the install process is more involved and updating it essentially requires you to redo the install process again. It's nothing crazy, but NewPipe is the "set it and forget it" option IMO.

  • Beast Wars. My wife and I both remember loving it when we were younger and wondered if that was just nostalgia and being a kid. It was not, the show is legitimately good.

  • You say, I feel that, and yet every time another poll about the economy comes out its like I live in a different universe entirely.

  • The upcoming Fallout series on Amazon Prime. This is a screencap taken from one of the most recent trailers.

  • The other guy is worse, so we really don’t have to listen to a damn thing you say at all and you have to vote for our guy, get that through your poverty addled brains.

I mean I hate to say it but this is unironically true. As bad as things are now The Other Guy absolutely would make things worse. Neoliberals may be a scourge but MAGA is cancer. One of the bad cancers. Not even prostate cancer, like pancreatic cancer.

  • Memes @lemmy.ml

Yeah but the economy is doing great

  • My high school had a "no hats indoors" rule and even that was regarded as dumb. No hats at all? Screw you if you wanna keep the sun out of your eyes I guess?

  • No hats. Toques are allowed, everything else is banned.

It's always rough when a gang of Chefs take over a school.

  • Supposedly there was a similar policy at my elementary school early on, which led to a kid being forced to eat something they were allergic to. As the story goes, they vomited violently all over the lunch monitor and then had to be taken to the nurse's office. Their parents were not amused. The policy did not stay in place.

  • Asklemmy @lemmy.ml

What is the stupidest school rule you've ever had to deal with?

  • Also, don't put all your eggs in one basket: diversify, diversify, diversify. Make a main account, but have more on at least one other instance. Instances go down for maintenance, software gets updated, owners change moderation policies, so on. If you can't get to Lemmy through your main, use your secondary.

Personally I use lemmy.sdf.org as my secondary. It's run by a bunch of retro-enthusiast Unix nerds who more care about the functionality of the tech than anything else. No blocked communities there, and AFAIK they haven't defederated from any instance outside of ones that were hacked/compromised. That does not mean you can just go there and be a shitbird though, they do have standards.

  • Child's Play is my go-to. They provide video games and consoles to hospitalized and often terminally ill children who literally can't go out and play. It was founded by the creators of Penny Arcade back in the early 2000s and so far to my knowledge hasn't had a single controversy or hint of anything nefarious. It's just nerds helping other, young, sick nerds/would-be-nerds get their nerd on.

I mean Doctors Without Borders definitely does more important work on the balance, but giving pediatric terminal cancer patients countless hours of joy isn't a trivial thing either.

  • They often have no damn clue what they're selling and clearly just make up prices on the spot. I've flipped a few things for a 500%+ profit from the super-ultra-Jesus-ey thrift stores. Computer hardware in particular is something they just don't grasp the value of. If you ever need a managed switch or a spare monitor, check the thrift stores.

  • For religious people they're sure eager to sell used "personal massagers" for $10.

Also, frankly, here in the Reno area it's basically impossible to find a thrift store that's not run by incredibly religious wackadoos. Best you can do is Goodwill, which is far from irreligious. Salvation Army is one of the few that isn't blasting Jesus Rock on the speakers when you're in there.

  • This, right here. Live Closed Captions are often a fair bit behind the actual video, because when it comes to accessibility it's more important to get the text right than to get the timing right.

  • Thrift stores are getting in on the piracy game I guess. Can't say I'm disappointed.

Look, I might have better copies now, but if someone wants to spend $3 and get the first 150+ episodes of Bleach and Naruto burned to KDVD I'd say they're gonna walk away happy with the deal they got.

  • Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ @lemmy.dbzer0.com

I donated some spindles of burned media and programs to Salvation Army expecting they'd throw 'em out. They're selling 'em for $3.

    Winnie the Pooh: Bounty Hunter

  • Yep. It was not at all what I wanted or expected. And yet, I can't deny that it looks good.

Of course as I said elsewhere, this is DALL-E 3 via Bing, which has a very mixed track record to begin with. I wasn't that surprised I didn't get what I wanted.

  • It's DALL-E 3 on Bing so they filter out all the penises unfortunately.

I get the impression there's a lot of filtering, too. I tried to do "J.C. Denton in the style of David Lynch" and every result was filtered. "J.C. Denton from Deus Ex in the style of David Lynch" on the other hand went through fine, despite "deu sex" being a common joke title for the series. Go figure.

Oh also if you're curious I'll attach what I got for that prompt.

Inspector Gadget in the style of H.R. Giger

  • LTSC also doesn't get incremental updates other than absolutely critical vulnerability fixes. It's specifically meant for machines that need everything to function exactly the same over a long period of time, e.g. point of sale machines, the accounting/inventory machine that hangs out in the back office, so on. You aren't going to get any major update or overhaul pushed to an LTSC version of Windows.

LTSC can also be a pain in the tuchus to get your hands on as an individual. If you have an MSDN account however (like through work or school) they often come with a bunch of keys for Microsoft products, including LTSC products. You can check here, just try logging in with your work/school email - even if it's non-Microsoft - and see what happens.

If you can't get your hands on an LTSC copy, then at a minimum try getting a copy of Windows 10/11 "N", which comes without Windows Media Player and Skype pre-installed. It's nowhere near as clean as LTSC, but every little bit helps.

  • So if anyone cares, here's what I finally went with on each tape. Not every tape was full, so some of these only needed an hour-ish of content to tape over it.

    • The entirety of The Backrooms, starting just after the title sequence, followed by some Everywhere at the End of Time
    • The entirety of Local 58, including the 30 minute lander stream
    • The bulk of The Mandela Effect (total runtime is longer than 2 hours by a lot)
    • David Lynch's Rabbits, followed by This House Has People In It
    • Weather Channel Vaporwave (full tape length)
    • The North Korean monster film Pulgasari, followed by the silent film version of Jekyll and Hide
    • Mystery Science Theater 3000: Godzilla vs. Megalon (one of the ones with no proper DVD release, keep circulating the tapes!)
    • Every FenserFilms G.I. Joe PSA parody (short tape)

Tacos are the greatest food ever and I cannot be convinced otherwise. #tacos #taco #food

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

I need to record over some Hi8 tapes; 5 tapes, ~2½ hours each. I can record audio and video directly. What should I put on there?

I've just learned that Romhacking.net is planning on removing their HomeBrew section entirely, probably during the next major update to the site. Sad, sad news.
