  • Last time I thought Matrix ran on ActivityPub like the rest of the Fediverse, though.

  • I think that we need more hybrid online/irl communities.

    • There's actually been some recent attempts to do exactly that, eg. zine communities have been getting big on ATproto recently, as well as art/craft communities in general.
  • Google's the main contributor to closing the web off, they even straight-up admitted to that a few months ago and tried to DRM the web with WEI, but that failed with massive backlash.

Boohoo, the open web is broken....

    • You caused it, MF'ers....

But yeah, walled gardens like Discord, Google, Meta, and Twitter certainly aren't helping matters, and even some of the alternatives got some controversy of their own, eg. Bsky recently censoring people on their main PDS, although given ATproto is an open protocol, there's no one and nothing stopping you from setting up an account on a third-party PDS like Blacksky or Northsky, or hosting your own, for example.

Apart from that, more open and decentralized/self-hostable alternatives need to crop up and fast, and we already have ATProto, ActivityPub/the Fediverse, PeerSuite, XMPP, and even LBRY/Odysee.

  • Linux of course, it's been headlining lately in terms of improvements particularly on the gaming front, but also FreeBSD based on how quickly it's been moving in terms of improvements on the general desktop front, FreeBSD is at the point where it's a viable third option on the desktop if you're not gaming, although that's assuming you're running its CURRENT branch since that's where the latest development happens.

  • You know things are getting bad when two governments are on your case about your patent trolling, Nintendo.

  • Whatever OS they want or need, be it Ubuntu or Mint or whatever, or even Windows for that matter; it ain't my system so it ain't my decision at the end of the day.

I could recommend things for my hypothetical client to look into on their own at a later date, but whatever OS I install on that system is ultimately up to the person I'm hypothetically building it for, I can't just randomly install something without the client's permission, assuming I'm getting paid to build them a PC in this hypothetical.

Granted I'm speaking in terms of that person being a client in a business relationship more than a casual 'I'm getting sick of Windows, what should I run instead' setting-it-up-for-a-friend scenario, but still.

  • I absolutely do, within reason and within legal limits, school kids should be able to wear whatever they want as it's a big part of their self expression.

Also, for things like art class, which can and will get very messy, very fast, especially with younger kids, school uniforms are just flat-out impractical vs. wearing old clothes you don't care about, eg. for clay day or for paper mache day or anything else like that, although ideally for stuff like this, you'd provide some old slightly oversized shirts to begin with that can be smudged with paint or clay or whatever without fear, effectively acting as smocks.

  • Haven't bothered to look, they sell it in full-sized though.

  • Restoring funding for public media and making it permanently untouchable by anything, meaning no rescissions packages can claw it back ever again, would be nice too.

  • This is going to be way more than five points but here goes:

    • Restore rights that and make them ironclad and impossible to take away again in the future, basically, make the Bill of Rights really be as inalienable as it claims to be and turn it into something that no one can touch without facing harsh consequences.
    • Eliminate privatized healthcare and replace it with a universal scheme.
    • Eliminate Citizens United and hold corporations under the same laws as normal people and under the same penalties for breaking them as normal people, maybe then they'd actually have to stop their abusive tactics.
    • Raise taxes on the rich while cutting taxes on everyone else, and cut military spending in half or deeper, and put the added funds and savings from cutting military spending towards restoring public media funding and earmarking said funding in a way that cannot be clawed back in a future rescissions package, as well as funding education, science, arts/humanities, and healthcare, and also reworking the public education system to where it's not the joke of society anymore and it's actually competitive with the rest of the world.
    • Actually regulate AI before it destroys everything, and also count MLMs under the same definition as illegal pyramid schemes, Ponzi schemes, etc, and actually make running one a jailable offense just like those other scams.
    • Eliminate privatized and especially for-profit post-secondary education, make predatory student loans patently illegal under the same scams listed above, and actually offer free post-secondary education like most of the other countries do.
    • Raise federal minimum wage to where it actually catches up with living costs, and actually put stronger affordable housing programs in place than Section 8 and make them applicable to anyone who needs them.
    • Make for-profit prisons illegal and reform the prison system to where it actually focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment, which if done right will greatly reduce recidivism rates (that means no more 'diesel therapy' among other things), and finally.......
    • Actually hold anyone who tries to straight-up turn a republic into a dictatorship accountable for their actions, and also stop the manufactured 'border crisis' and actually allow the country to be the accepting bastion of freedom it bills itself as, basically let it do as it says on the tin, as it were, and start actually treating marginalized communities the same as everyone else, that means PoC, the LGBT community, the disabled community, and especially the AuDHD community has the same rights as everyone else as opposed to being discriminated against.

As an added bonus, outlaw mandatory online ID checks and code it into law that such things be strictly optional.

This is a hypothetical so I might as well go ham.

  • Bedding and sheets with fun prints

    • Technically there's no one and nothing stopping you from buying Pokemon bedding, for example.

    Clothes with dinosaur/unicorn/etc designs

    • Also, cute clothes have been trendy since MLP:FiM at the earliest.
  • Start stocking up on CDs and ripping them to FLAC yourself, and self-host those rips on an MPD server. Free streaming from a server you own and control the content on.

  • And also free speech, free press, rights in general.... And I also can't shake the feeling that the government shutdown was a ploy to attempt to delay or cancel both upcoming elections.

  • Because the vote was rigged and Elon Musk basically bought Trump the election.

  • His audience mostly.

  • I only counted Jobst for how quickly everyone turned on him after the lawsuit loss, so it's purely for being a rapid downfall, Iiiluminaughtii is way worse.

  • Recently? Either Iilluminaughtii or Karl Jobst.

  • Invincibility IIRC.

  • I'd say audio CDs, but those have been back on the upward trend since streaming and download services started getting hostile and people started wising up to that hostility, in other words, people want to own their music again and so started buying CDs again recently vs. having a streaming or download service randomly yank content they paid for from their libraries.

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

What's with all the people on here asking, 'Can I do this with AI, can I do that with AI' lately?

Google just broke all third-party YT clients, including yt-dlp; a full JS implementation is now required.
