  • Potentially take a look at Sling TV. They’re selling the same streaming TV service that YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV are, but they’ve structured things slightly differently. They have a “Sling Orange” and “Sling Blue” package which roughly translates to, “Do you want sports or cable news?” They both have an 80% overlap of channels like HGTV and Food Network, but Orange has ESPN and Blue has CNN. If you buy both it costs about the same as YouTube TV, but you save a decent chunk of change if you can forgo one of the packages.

    The only big catch is they don’t carry local stations. If you sign up for 3 months in advance though, they’ll ship you a network connected TV antenna that you can use inside the Sling app to watch local TV. It’s probably not the most parent-friendly solution, but it works for watching one or two event programs a year like the Super Bowl or a debate.

  • I wanted to make something a little indulgent this weekend. These burritos are stuffed with chopped brisket, home fries with poblano and onions, scrambled eggs, and topped with homemade white queso, guac, and roja salsa. It was a fun mashup up diner vibes and Tex-Mex smokiness.

  • It’s a soup made with chicken broth, shredded chicken, tomatoes, onion, garlic, herbs, spices, and semi-submerged crispy corn products. They’re some authentic Mexican versions, and some incredibly TexMex versions. The black beans and corn put this firmly in the yeehaw territory, but it’s at least got some freshly toasted pasilla chiles and fried corn tortillas.

  • Chicken tortilla soup with a healthy dose of lime! My local taco place does a soup special when it gets cold, and I’ve had this one enough that I wanted to try and recreate it. I usually skew more towards stews in chilly weather, but this soup’s on my short list next time I’m in the mood for something brothy.

  • It sounds like there might not be much in your stew to thicken it. The beef fat helps a bit, but you can toss the beef chunks in flour to give the stew a bit more body. This recipe I used just straight up has you add some unflavored powdered gelatin to it to give you that coating-the-back-of-a-spoon texture.

    I’ve used red wine and beef in dishes together in the past. Usually you just need something a little salty to balance the sweetness out. The UK condiment marmite usually does the trick for me, although soy sauce can work in a pinch.

  • My favorite one of these shows up in 3D printing. The most popular open source 3D print server gives you a head’s up if your printer’s firmware lacks “Thermal Runaway Protection”. If you click the learn more link, it patiently explains, “There aren’t preventative measures to stop your printer from accidentally catching itself on fire”.

    (It’s fine, you usually just need to install a decent MOSFET in the cheaper printers.)

  • I think they realized their price structure was confusing/annoying towards the end of last year. Now it’s just $5/mo for 300 searches or $10/mo for unlimited. (There’s also still an expensive $25/mo plan for early access to some of their LLM experiments apparently?) You got me curious and I couldn’t find any mention of per-search overage billing. This feature request thread from 2022 just makes it sound like Kagi search gets shut off.

    I bouncing hard off of Kagi when they had the original pricing structure you described. Bringing back aughts era SMS overages or just mentally having to count searches doesn’t exactly found like a fun time. I’m going to give the $5 plan a try this month to see how far that gets me. $10/mo is still a tough sell for Internet search. If I really find it substantially better, I might convince my spouse into trying the two seat $14/mo unlimited “Duo” plan for a while.
