  • That's a good thing. It's not because Apple has massively increased. It's because more Android manufacturers are competing in the market. I never wanted Samsung to be the dominant brand in the Android market. They're just as anti-consumer as Apple. The only reason they allow as much software freedom as they do is because it's forced upon them by the Android OS. If they had it their way, they'd force users to to the Samsung app store and their browser. Both of which are horrible. Just look at their smart watch, home appliances, or TV segments. They're all locked down. I last owned a Galaxy S20 FE (I think) and the bloat on it is just as bad if not worse than iPhone. And it only allows you to disable the apps rather than uninstalling.

I've been using a 2023 Motorola edge+ for at least 2 years and the experience is pretty close to stock Android. It charges at 68W and the battery lasts all day. I love the Moto gestures like the chop-chop flashlight and twist to open the camera. My biggest gripe is hardware. The curved screen makes it hard to find screen protectors and cases on top of being more fragile. But otherwise I have a phone that runs as well as some Samsung flagships for half the price. I think I paid $700. Competition in the Android market can only be a good thing for consumers.

  • I think you're thinking of sandburs. Which I'm pretty sure are different, but also fucking nasty plants. They end up in our poor dogs' paws late summer/early fall. If I could eliminate any plant. That one.

  • It may not be a "unicorn" per se, but it's often forgotten since it came out in 2020 and they weren't able to tour the album. Coldplay's Everyday Life is an art piece to me.

    Honorable mentions:

  • Im not quite there yet, but literally everyone feels this. You know what you know and you don't know what you don't know. Being an adult is figuring out how to distinguish between the two. If you're able to recognize that something isn't in your breadth of knowledge and you're able to consult with someone else who is more educated on the subject matter OR you're able to self-educate before applying your ignorance, then that makes you an adult in my eyes. Or at least is a large part of the bigger picture.

  • I love how often I find nuanced comments like this in lemmy comments. Reddit would have told this person to hire a private investigator to kidnap this person and drag them back into the social life they were distancing themselves from

  • Have you told that to companies that train A.I. or the Supreme Court?

  • Mildly Infuriating @lemmy.world

Embedded video in online articles is totally broken.

  • Format, no, but sometimes the release group. I've filtered some of them out but there's times when they're the only option for high quality content. So I was hoping to solve the issue another way.

Excellent insight on the after release setting, that would explain why they're getting downloaded prior to the air date. I always assumed that's what that meant.

  • The first time we were introduced to them was in Rome where they're a bit different. It's called supplì there and they have tomato sauce as well. So good!

  • Look, I'm fully aware that this won't sit well with the billionaires are horrifying monsters that not only should be slain but should be strung up in the town square and be given the blood eagle...BUT if you're going to make the argument that traffic fines or any other monetary penalties should be a percentage of your net wealth or yearly income, then you have to acknowledge that giving away half of your lifetime earnings is a tremendous act of good will.

Now--there is a difference between me giving up $5000 of my roughly $11,000 in liquidity. We still have around $40,000 in student loan debt and $120k in a 25 year mortgage while we make about $100k per year. And these billionaires could still buy a second house in Cabo with a helipad using what is remaining, but it is SOMETHING. If they truly are "spurning" their billionaire status they should start with giving away half their fortune and continue to give away half their yearly income on top of that, but I won't totally disregard the contribution that they've already made. Unless they're republican. Then I'm nearly certain that money is going exactly where it shouldn't.

  • What the hell are you on about? Renters accompany prospective buyers on tours or walk throughs. No one is doing remote tours.

  • You sure? Cause nothing about what you're talking about is critical. Part of being a renter is the cost associated with showing units and convincing people to buy. You're lucky enough to have the capital to own rental property that's essentially passive income. If you don't want to put in the effort to show a unit to a potential tenant, then sell the real estate and fuck off with your money.

"Oh, you're interested in a desktop PC? It cost us money to power it on and show how well it runs while playing games or using it as a workstation. So to cover that cost we're going to have to charge you $5 to mess around with a display model."

"Test drive a used car on our lot? You're using 5 minutes of fuel and wearing the tires so $5 please."

"Welcome to your local shopping mall. It costs us money to keep the place cool in the summer and we're tired of people coming in and not buying something so to make sure we recapture that cost, we're charging $5 at the door."

  • Right, but the poster did mention that they were making a connection and transferring at least some data, so I just kind of inferred that the seeder has port forwarding.

  • If I understand correctly, port forwarding has no effect on download. It's only a factor in seeding. So if that's the case, there's likely nothing you can do. Your download rate is entirely dependent on the behavior of the seeder you're downloading from. If they give priority to other media that is more popular and increases their seed ratio while relegating the source you're trying to download, then you're at their mercy. This is why using VPNs that are capable of port forwarding is so important. You may be the only person who manages to download whatever it is your trying to grab. If the seeder you got it from goes offline, anyone else wanting that material is shit out of luck unless they happen to use Mullvad. Mullvad is great. Their privacy and pricing is very strong. I'd recommend it to anyone, but for the purpose of information availability and preservation through torrenting, a VPN capable of port forwarding is a requirement.

  • Home roasted beans from Sweet Maria's. Specifically Burundi Gakenke Honey Process. I actually just finished an espresso 30 minutes ago because we were gone this weekend and my new bottomless portafilter was delivered on Friday so I was anxious to test it. I use 20g in and 44g out in ~35s.

  • Keep it up. I don't much care about off-season news or anything, but I'll probably join the discussion when it comes to highlights and game threads. These upcoming seasons for each sport will play a big part in how active the community will be going forward I think. Unfortunately a bunch of traffic was dominated by the presidential election last year so other niche topics should gain more traction this year.

  • 5 years ago to the day I lost one of my best friends to a drowning accident while we were on a float trip. We were just 24 and 25yo. From that day I realized that no one is untouchable by tragedy. I already knew that but didn't live it. Now as a friend group all of us are much more vocal about our feelings and our expressions of love to each other. It was a long car ride home that night. 2-3 hours of silence from 1:00-3:00am just letting it sink in that we watched our friend die. I personally performed CPR on him and took lead in his rescue attempt. As a medical professional, I learned more from that single experience than anything in school which is my silver lining.

  • Say I'm a trans female. Can I post then? Trans man? Gay man? Gay woman?

It's self policing. If they're being obnoxious or killing the environment or culture of the space, downvote/block/report and move on.

  • Holy cow am I glad that I have no desire to pirate (presumably) nude photos of celebrities. Let alone post on a forum about where I can find them...you do you of course, but this seems like trouble

  • I guess I wasn't factoring in the context. I was just focused on the hard drives not having issues with magnets thing. But yeah in that case you're right. And google did tell me that most modern hard drives have pretty robust protection from magnetic fields now. So you're doubly right. TIL
