Just a techie guy running feddit.online to allow people to communicate, make friends and acquaintances. Odd coming from a happy introvert, right? (https://jerry.hear-me.blog/about)

I also own these publicly available applications:Mastodon: https://hear-me.social/Alternative Mastodon UI: https://phanpy.hear-me.social/Peertube: https://my-sunshine.video/Friendica: https://my-place.social/Matrix: https://element.secure-channel.net/XMPP/Jabber: https://between-us.online/Bluesky PDS: https://blue-ocean.social/ (jerry.blue-ocean.social) Mobilizon (Facebook Events Alt): https://my-group.events/and more...

  • Dumb question. Are you sure the "I" after the @ in ItsGloria is an upper case I (eye) and not a lower case l (L)?

I'd really like to kick the idiot who created a font where both are identical.

  • I just searched for @ ItsGloria @ vivaldi.net on my Mastodon instance and everything appears good. It tells me that you switched your account to Glor.

Have you since resolved the issue then?

  • Proton Mail, Tuta mail, runbox.com, to name three.

  • Depends on the application for me. For Mastodon, I want to allow 12K character posts, more than 4 poll question choices, and custom themes. Can't do it with Docker containers. For Peertube, Mobilizon, and Peertube, I use Docker containers.

  • I'm on the Mozilla VPN which uses Mullvad and I don't see a problem.

  • This tells me that you'd be in a lot of trouble if you lost your phone or had to wipe it because someone got into it. It's probably good then that you're now thinking about this so you can prepare for a time when you won't have your phone for other reasons.

All sites supporting 2FA usually allow you to use a second method. Email is usually an alternative. Assuming that your email is your universal second OTP method, you just need to make sure you will always have access to your email account and you'll be fine. So just solve for the OTP problem for your email account.

Pre-buy your burner phone and make it a second OTP device for your email account. For more assurance, buy a couple of physical keys (like Yubikey) that can be used with your email account. These can also be set up for some of your other accounts that support it, which may be more convenient than email when accessing them.

  • This better be an April Fools joke

  • Yes, it's worth it. I own mine for just the reason you give. You can take it to any other provider. And there's no danger of the email provider deciding to close your account or cutting you off unexpectedly. Imagine losing your email access. At least with your own domain, you can switch it that same day to someone else.

Unsure about whois lookup privacy. My registrar hides my details as an option. Anyone looking up the domain just sees them as the contact for the domain.

  • Yep. A "private" message where the recipient is listed in the message is a DM in Mastodon. It will only be delivered to the mentioned person.

  • Nope. Locked inside a VPC with only one VPS allowed to communicate with it.

  • Selfhosted @lemmy.world

mysql or postgresql? Which is better for an Internet-facing application

  • Everyone is answering about wearing a mask, when the poster clearly makes the point that they don't have one. They can't just poof it from the air. The answers are not helpful.

The question is about whether shallow breathing and nose or mouth breathing is better. It's a very particular question. An interesting question.

Does anyone know, with real scientific knowledge, what the answer to this specific question is? Can anyone answer to the specific question?

  • As one Admin to another, I'm sad to hear that we're losing a good instance. And, I'm sorry that people ruined your fun.

Thanks for all you've done. All the best to you.

  • OMG. Thanks for posting. I run a Mastodon server as well and, oh my, the Mastodon Developers would never have been willing to help me. A wild tale. Glad the fix ended up in the next release. Thanks for posting!

  • There were two screen shots. I saw them. At least one of them was doctored. That is all anybody knows. How are some people so certain which Admin doctored the screen shot?

  • I feel like the reason #Mastodon, and the #Fediverse at large, aren't taking off has to do with the fact that they're *actually

So i've been trying to talk to a friend about the #Fediverse lately and they seem to think that the US Government will crack down on it because Billionaires might

  • @SamXavia I think your friend is a looney conspiracy theorist

  • Mine won't nor will any of my other 3 Fediverse servers.

I know of a number of Mastodon servers that have already de-federated or limited threads.net, even though it does not yet connect to the Fediverse. Some are even limiting or suspending connections to servers that refuse to de-federate from threads.net and are trying to pressure other servers to do the same.

An Admin has no right to force their personal agendas onto all the people who are on their servers. People are competent enough to make their own decisions and can individually decide to block or limit Threads. I block servers on my server to protect members from hateful people.

I will limit threads.net if their moderation is inadequate, just as I do now for a number of Mastodon servers that don't do much to keep hatred and offensive content off their servers. This won't prevent anyone from following someone or being followed by someone, on threads.net. It just means that people on my server need to approve being followed and that posts from threads.net won't show up in the public timeline.

At this point, I haven't heard of any Kbin instances planning to de-federate but there's a ton of yacking about it on Mastodon. I finally muted the "threads" hashtag to get some peace from it.
