  • You're playing some really good classics there @[email protected]. You're right, Dark Souls is not that hard, but it's a game that requires you to play carefully and slowly learn enemy positioning and attacks.

Weekend ended up being really busy so I didn't have the time for a good Nine Sols session, so the status for that game is still "at the last boss but need to sit down and practice".

    Playing Super Robot Taisen Y!

I played a lot of missions this week, but story progress was slow becaused DLC1 got released and I decided it was time to get the bundle. This first DLC comes with Big O, Bryger and goddamn Kamen Rider Double, and since buying the bundle also gives you extra missions to recruit the protagonists of two older games (Iori+Amari from SRTX and Saizo+Sagiri from SRTT) I had a ton of new content to play.

The DLC honestly feels overpriced for what it brings, but I'm having a good time with it. They did a much better job integrating the DLC in the main game compared to the previous game (SRT30), there's a lot more interactions with characters from other series, plus a new side-plot with a common enemy focused on the units included in this pack.

    Playing Super Mario Galaxy 2!

Reached World 5. I have enough stars to proceed to the next world but want to explore more before doing that. "Prankster Comet" challenge levels are getting quite hard, so I might avoid those at least until I finish the main game.

Finished Milk inside a bag of milk inside a bag of milk!

This is a very short (~30min) VN, but it's quite unique and disturbing. You play as the "voice in the head" of a mentally ill girl who is trying her best to do a simple task: Buy milk and get back home. There's only two endings, one if she manages to complete her task and another where she fails, and it largely depends on how nice or mean you are to her during the path to the store.

This bundle also comes with the sequel game which I plan on playing soon. It's longer but not by much (people say it's ~90min total with 5 endings), and I'm quite curious about it.

Probably not worth it at full price, but I got it on sale for $2 and so far it's been an interesting experience.

  • Battletoads

Ninja Gaiden 2: The Dark Sword of Chaos

Nintendo is trying to give PTSD to a new generation of players with these.

  • Crazy that the CotND team still can't get a dev kit, they are the guys who did a Zelda crossover game that was published by Nintendo itself.

  • I hadn’t tried running Towerfall since getting my Switch 2. What is not working with it?

Don't have a Switch 2 yet so I don't know, but it's listed in the eShop as "unsupported": https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/towerfall-switch/

I have a spreadsheet with all my games where I've been tracking what is still listed as having issues.

In my library, Crypt of the Necrodancer is still completely unplayable with latest firmware. Crashes during initial loading. Two firmware patches ago (before 21.0.0) it was briefly playable but you’d have to restart the Switch 2 (full power options restart) or you’d have major sound issues.

Interesting, I also have that game and I remember people commenting that one was fixed, and according to my spreadsheet was listed as "working fine" in the Nintendo website when I last checked.

At least they have it listed as unsupported again, which shows some commitment to have the proper information there: https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/crypt-of-the-necrodancer-nintendo-switch-edition-switch/

But I wish there was a changelog somewhere to make it easier to follow this. :/

  • Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ also moved to "compatible" with this update. Now the only game I have in my collection that is marked as "not working" on the Switch 2 is Towerfall.

  • Playing Super Robot Taisen Y!

Same update as last week, finished a few more missions but still in Chapter 6.

    Playing Nine Sols!

Reached the final boss... and it's kicking my ass. 😄 Really cool battle though, love the way they use some of the same moves your main character have.

Which makes a lot of sense, you're dueling against the one who taught you to fight.

I want to try to beat it without lowering difficulty, but I need time to sit down and have a good and long "practice session" to learn its patterns and could not do it during the week. But might be able to take that time tomorrow.

    Playing Super Mario Galaxy 2!

I had finished the first game way back on the Wii, but had never played the second one properly. And what a great game, stages are very creative and unique, music is great, and despite its age still plays quite well.

One thing to notice is that these games originally made use of the pointer functionality on the Wii, which had to be adapted in the Switch port to use either use gyro controls or touchscreen. The former is a decent approximation and works well when playing docked, but both options felt somewhat clunky when playing handheld.

This game can be pretty damn hard at times, those optional "Prankster Comet" got me a few game overs already. But I'm having a blast with it, and just reached the World 3 castle.

  • Was not familiar with that one, I usually track VN releases using vndb.org but they have some odd/strict standards on what qualifies as a "VN", so I end up missing a few.

That one looks interesting, I added it to my wishlist.

  • Life won't be back to normal for a while because I decided to take a risk and switch jobs after 20+ years. 😀 But it's the "good" type of trouble.

  • Weird (but not bad) week in personal life where I had a lot to think about, so very limited gaming time.

    Playing Super Robot Taisen Y!

Still in Chapter 6, only a did a couple of missions.

    Playing Nine Sols!

Defeated Fuxi & Nuwa and reached what I think is the “point of no return” for this game. So unless I get stuck in a late-game boss I should finish this one soon. 😊

  • See familiar-loking kanji, confirm it's Dodonpachi Saidaioujou.

    Immediately upvote.

  • This site is faster, but you could already get the same information from the game page in the eShop.

Also, it doesn't solve the biggest problem I have right now trying to get compatibility information: Delisted games. They don't show up in the eShop nor in this new site, so I can't tell if they have issues or not.

  • Playing Super Robot Taisen Y!

Reached chapter 6 and got a cool new attack for the Yz-Lunedrache. Also got to the point of the game you have to make your ending choice and went with the "B" route, which is supposed to be the harder one.

I barely met Izana and it's entirely possible she's a victim of Dr. Yagami, but she was being shitty to Echika and big sis Forte can't tolerate that. So I picked the "rejection" choice and and we'll see where this leads us.

Happy that once again you can recruit the "alternate" protagonist, I finished the "Relic of Gold" missions and got Cross in my team. He seems more fun than I expected, but given how long this game is I don't think I'll do a second run with him as the lead.

    Playing Nine Sols!

Lady Ethereal was an insanely hard boss and almost got me to finally drop from "standard" difficulty, but after a billion* attempts I managed to beat her. Incredibly fun battle though, despite all those deaths I never got frustrated. The buildup for the battle was also amazing and added a lot to the experience.

I'm really enjoying this game. Bosses are challenging but fair, exploration is rewarding, and the feeling of "growth" of your main character as you get more upgrades is great. One additional highlight is the story, there's a lot of cool comic-book style cutscenes and plenty of dialogue with NPCs adding lore and character building.

(*) It's a hyperbole but I died a ridiculous amount of times to this boss.

  • Metroid is also on S1 so I don't see much incentive in getting a S2 for it. Kirby Air Riders looks good but it's not the type of game that I'm usually interested in.

So far the non-S1 games I'm interested are DK (Released), Fire Emblem (2026) and Adventures of Elliot (2026), so not much incentive to get a S2 for now. Maybe later next year when more games are released?

  • I'm not complaining about it but it's the #1 reason I don't have a S2 yet (nor am considering it short-term).

  • So far the red/non-parryable attacks in this game all have longer wind-ups and flashier animations, so I'm not having a hard time identifying or reacting to them.

  • I'll give a counterpoint that I barely managed to finish HK and Silksong and would never try to 100% them, but I'm several hours into Nine Sols and I'm getting along just fine with the parrying mechanic. I'm honestly having more trouble with the red attacks that you can't parry, in particular the ones that still hit if you're standing close behind the enemy - muscle memory from other games makes me try to dodge to this position so those attacks just keep wrecking me.

But might be one of those things that depends a lot on the person.

  • I think it’s one of those games that still isn’t compatible with Switch 2. I don’t have a Switch 2 (yet, maybe for xmas), but surely it will get fixed eventually?

According to reports I've seen it runs but crashes very often.

Really wish they'd patch this, I was researching the compatibility with games in my collection and this is the biggest one that's listed as "not working".

  • My initial impression is that its Standard mode in the same level in difficulty as HK, so you'd probably want to use Story Mode and tweak the damage numbers.

I haven't tested it but the wiki says you can go as far as "take 1% damage and deal 1000%", so you can definitely find a sweet spot for your tastes: https://ninesols.wiki.gg/wiki/Game_Modes

  • Playing Super Robot Taisen Y!

Almost done with Chapter 5, most meaningful upgrade to the team this week was getting Mazin Emperor G. According to the wiki I have to make the choice of my ending path by the end of this chapter, curious what are the options will be.

    Playing Nine Sols!

Current side-game. Had this in my wishlist for a while and was hesitant to pick it up due to Silksong PTSD, but after seeing it go on sale and hearing it has accessibility options to lower difficulty if necessary I decided to give it a shot.

And I'm having a lot of fun. I'm trying to keep going on the "Standard" difficulty and the game is kicking my ass, but so far it doesn't feel as punishing as Silksong. Game is very combat-focused, mob enemies can hit really hard so you need to move carefully, but the game doesn't usually throw too many enemies at once and you're also constantly finding shortcuts so even if you die you can get back to where you were quickly.

The hardest part has been to let go of the muscle memory from other metroidvanis to try dodging everything and go hard on parry instead. Realizing I could parry or cancel all but one of the attacks of the first major boss was an "Eureka!" moment that let me progress much faster in that battle.

Switch 1 performance is... passable. Noticeable frame drops but nothing that hurts gameplay. One last comment that I'd like to make is that this game has a lot more cutscenes/story sections than I expected, and it can get really dark, the end of story prologue was a very surprising twist.
