Hello, and welcone to Lemmy. Glad you made it, here's my overall advice:
No need to get hung up over a few early downvotes on your comment that might cause its score to go negative for a bit. People can be strongly opinionated here. Not everyone agrees with me on this, but I do appreciate people willing to post honestly held unpopular opinions and play a reasonable devil's advocate in threads. (This is different than just being a contrarian.)
For your own and everyone's benefit, try to engage in thoughtful, well reasoned and good faith discussion with empathy for others where it's due. If you feel like a chain of replies is going nowhere good, there's no shame in walking away from it.
Report and block the jerks, trolls and spammers you might encounter like on any forum-like site. Don't let them spoil your experience when most people here are respectful.

It was 5-10 years ago, not too hard to find and a little before Google intentionally made things harder to find. I've used many public and private trackers, but it's just that these days my interest in movies has disappeared almost completely, and I'm happy with most of the games I have.

I've had a lot less of a desire to pirate games after moving to Linux full time a few years ago. But FitGirl has been the one reliable place for public torrents, compaed to chancing it on the third Google Link or scrolling through the Russian CS-Rin-Rulette forum to find links.

How do I explain my reluctance to use generative AI in good faith?

Personally it's because the harder something is pushed to me by large corporations, the more skeptical I am to begin with.

It is your stance, you don't have to compulsively change other people's minds, let them live their lives and you live how you want. For people that are wanting to listen to you, you can tell them how you feel about AI (or perhaps specifically AI chatbots) in both subjective and objective terms. If you want to prepare research and talking points, I think the most effective thing is to have a couple examples such as the Google AI box putting out objectively wrong info with the citation links leading to sites that don't back up any claim in it. Or how the outputs of comic style image generation tend to look like knock-off Tintin and appear uninspiring and unsettling. How reading generated paragraphs, looking at images and videos of fluffy slop is simply a waste of time for you. Just mix that with all the rest of the shortcomings people have provided and you'll make for a good discussion. Remember, the point is not to change people's minds or proselytize but rather to explain why you hold your opinion.

You are correct, though it bears stating that they make millions from kids gambling and they make billions for their software distribution platform, as one indicator of Valve's priorities as a for-profit company.

Call me a shill, but Valve's actions indicate that they care about the money that comes from improving a product or service. That differentiates them from many publicly traded companies that care about money at the expense of the quality of their own products and services.

The community URL is still [email protected] (so https://sh.itjust.works/c/[email protected] for you), which won't be easy for people to remember if they are trying to mention the steam hardware community. At the moment community and user handles can't be changed on Lemmy (though the display name can be set to anything).

Not on purpose in the way you are suggesting... he tried it all on his own in earnest, but made a dumb mistake not reading the prompt carefully enough or trying to understand it. But, he only got into that situation because of an error on Pop OS! maintainers' part. It was an unknown issue at the time until he uncovered it. OCAU thread that discussed the issue at the time

I think much of the gatekeeping is over concern that if you mess up, you could unknowingly be allowing a sophisticated hacker to access all the data on your network, without any obvious signs. And maybe some people don't want to field noob questions like "I clicked something and now the GUI gives a 😕 and doesn't work anymore, what do I do?".

There is a skill floor, I would say similarly that you wouldn't be ready to install Linux yourself if you don't get suspicious when a .iso download gives you a .exe file instead.

I think Yunohost is a decent solution for beginners that avoids as much of the nitty-gritty as possible. Louis Rossman has made a massive guide that's about as close as an IKEA step-by-step as you can get with this stuff. We should be encouraging people to learn, but there is a sense of reticence to have people get too in over their heads due to cybersecurity reasons.

He has no official ties with the European Citizen's Initiative (besides "hype-man" as I recall he described it) but he is the founder of the Stop Killing Games movement, encompassing the original research effort in terms of what people could do to stop games being lost or intentionally destroyed.

In one sense yes they are a monopoly. But there are alternative game stores. However Valve has earned their cut of money by actually trying to make a platform that works for game developers, game players and themselves.

Don't get me wrong, they have a high risk of turning bad and extorting the market they have captured. But the truth is that every equally or greater sized competitor (Microsoft, Ubisoft, EA, Epic) has already skipped to the extortion part of the cycle and Valve simply hasn't, and hasn't really expressed any intention to do that. Being a privately owned company, Valve is allowed to sit back, enjoy the money they do make and not have to constantly ask for more, and develop what the staff feel like making without strict deadlines.

The smaller competitors are still great even if not as feature filled (GOG, itch) and you should support them too. So while I reject that Valve is the big bad, I also reject that Valve could never enshittify. My position is that Valve has earned a trust no one else has (even itch had to cave to Credit Card companies), and that trust is Valve's to break.

Yeah, could it not be just setting /var/age or /home/user/.config/age to '20' or 'D', and just have a function to pass that value to a web browser to bypass every age gate prompt?
