  • What Keeps you up at night?

  • Nothing in particular. I stay lying in bed lying completely still, consciously relaxing every muscle in my body and trying to focus on my heartbeat for up to an hour at a time. It doesn't work for some reason and it's exhausting.

  • Back in the early 2000s there was a Jurassic Park III-adjacent game that used the same gimmick. It was called Scan Command and the idea was the bar code scans would give you genetic parts that you could use to upgrade your dinosaurs. I very quickly found out you could use a thin blanket and rub the scanner back and forth over it to get as many parts as you want.

  • Communist centrally planned economies suck. That's how you end up with panicking factory and farm managers exaggerating their production to the state to not end up in the gulag. A better alternative could be petitioning the government for money to start a worker-owned co-op that produce things at quantities that people would actually want. Do that and keep the government democratic composed of different parties with socialist mindsets at their heart and things should be better for all without the baggage of authoritarianism.

  • When an organization targets a metric, that same metric will then fail it eventually. It even happened to the Soviets when plant managers had to over report production or else face the wrath of the administration. I often wonder why management can't just realize some things are better left untouched lest they break something.

  • Linux Mint still has problems displaying games after the system wakes from sleep for some reason. Maybe Bazzite or Pop_OS would work better?

  • Multilingual people, do you feel better about yourself than those that only speak one language? Monolingual people, do you envy/admire Multilingual people? And why?

  • Spanish, English, and some Japanese here. I feel it's easier to pick up underlying patterns in vocabulary between languages which in turn lets me understand the written form of other related languages (Portuguese and Italian due to Spanish, some Chinese too). I don't really consider monolingual to be all that different though I figure it can limit their ability to travel the world unhindered somewhat. I notice a very slight change in my personality depending on the language I'm speaking, like I get a little less patient when talking in Spanish and speak a little faster too.

  • Depends on what job you're in. If it's highly technical and niche you'll have an easier time finding a better job. A competitor recently tried to poach me for a 50% raise but I turned them down since they didn't have hybrid work available. Sometimes it's better to stick with a job that offers things you value more than money.

  • I once went to a free lunch event hosted by a local church. The guy in there trying to convert me was using the story of how Moses (the "let my people go" guy) built an Ark that somehow proved God loved mankind.

  • It's really hard to understand some of it. It might've been fun if I had good math instructors for every class at every step of the way from algebra to ordinary differentials. Because so much material builds on what was taught before, it gradually got more and more incomprehensible until I gave up trying to understand it halfway through cal 2 and just memorized the important parts enough to pass. Besides that, I rarely see applications in day to day life past basic algebra. It's not like I'm gonna take careful measurements of how fast my car's going to derive my exact fuel consumption rate. It's easier to just go off the odometer and gas pump readings between fills for instance.
