  • I think there's also a bit of rationality behind that system, because

    a) Trolls will just lie and declare an article says something it doesn't to "win" an argument or waste people's time making them read their bullshit article (usually something hosted on a website you don't want to give traffic to)

    b) Some people on those forums might have tightly constrained time-frames for looking at things because they're students or they're working in a restaurant or retail shop or some other kind of closely managed service job where they can get yelled at by a supervisor for using their phone

    c) There's a lot of content to get to on the internet

    So, I think it's kind of a dick move to get mad at other people for not reading the article, and it's definitely a dick move to do that if you don't take the time to quote the specific part of the article they're claiming contradicts someone else

  • I'd say it's not as bad because it comes from (I think) a genuinely well meaning place, but it is definitely destructive, both just on its own and because it will produce a Streisand effect from the people it pisses off and cause them to devolve into full time trolls when they might not otherwise

  • Yeah, like even if they did manage to break away they would constantly be getting little raiding parties and all sorts of harassment from the old government and continually have to waste all sorts of resources on defending themselves. If it gets to the point where open armed conflict with the US government seems like a good idea you might as well skip past secession to overthrow.

  • I think it's a way bigger problem how some adults refuse to ever consider that the system is at fault and think every single problem in the world must be reduced down to an individual failing instead of a badly designed system that makes it easy for individuals to fail for stupid reasons

  • But the coolest thing is that it does not need to be a competition. Both platforms can do good in the federation.

    100% agreed, I'd even go further and say that having a diversity of systems makes for a more resilient ActivityPub ecosystem. It's not only non-competitive, it's inherently cooperative.

    The fact that PieFed and Lemmy work interchangeably with each other is wonderful, and that plus the fact that I'm lazy means I'm probably going to keep primarily going through lemmy.world for now, but I'm definitely going to keep thinking about it and checking up on it.
