  • "reading" is not so common as it once was. what kind of reading are we talking about - fiction, non-fiction? Anyway, the numbers I'm seeing say that the US reads at a 10th-grade level, which is about average in the world. Of course it varies from place-to-place.

When it comes to non-fiction, today there are other ways of getting information. Youtube for one. Where learning from experts can often be better than reading a book. OTOH, you can lead a horse to water...

  • There's a high probability that a 100m asteroid has already been spotted ahead of time. What could we do about it? Not much.

OTOH, there haven't been any such strikes in -recorded- history. We can rest assured that, for the living, the odds of not experiencing one are very good. Also, the Earth is 3/4 water, that's where they're likely to strike. People on the shores nearby would be in the most danger... but with warning time.

  • Can't force you to anything, if you weren't told about it before you bought it. Demand a refund and give them a date they get it out of your place by.

  • I just for the hell of it installed and tried the Flatpak version of an MVP player I use daily. The daily started playing a stream in 2 or 3 seconds. After starting the same stream on the Flatpak, it was still downloading after a minute had gone by. Not just FAT but SLOOOOOOw.

  • It's very well done. Lot of insights into what happened in the 12 years before the movie. The way they treated Roddenberry ... arg.

  • They'd have trouble if the 'fist' is sloppy enough. Swing it

  • Encryption wasn't ever legal for most hams. But, then, who can copy 30wpm Morse these days?

  • Go full zombie (with the help of Fox 'News').

Then put all of their assets into Trump coins.

  • Blade Runner

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Monte Python and the Holy Grail

    Christmas Carol (1951 w/Alistair Sim)

  • Good luck with that. Have u ever seen how they had to bury Reagan?

    1. Your phone is the least private device you own. Every app you add makes it worse.
    2. Don't use that bank plastic any more than you have to. Cash has built-in privacy. And -never- let it out of your hands.
    3. Unless it's legally required, -never- write or 'give' 'your' SS number.
    4. None of these numbers we just have to remember are 'ours'. Do cows own 'their' ear-tags? They just oil the machinery.
    5. Before you get rid of that hard drive, open it up and rip out the internal wiring. Then drive a couple of nails through the platters.

  • A more thoughtful way to do it would be if the user were able to delete any contributions they'd made to the discussion (while the title and links persist). This should be the default. NO contribution would ever be removed except by the creator (or by the mods, if warranted according to ze rools.)

  • People who live next to a freeway or major arterial often get relief because walls get built to deflect the continual noise away from housing.

These people need to organize and demand relief. That mine needs to be inside insulated walls... or moved WAY out of town. 300MW? I guess they can afford it.

  • No wonder. As you can see, there's a lot less use of that 'O-word' over here.

  • I'm certain that she didn't mean that -all- fields of science were scams ... it's always been physics that she's PO'd at. And I understand that point 'cuz I'm very familiar with the history of physics, so I don't need your recommendations. The position you've taken is clearly unassailable; I appreciate her news reports and chuckle at her sarcasm, so I guess we're done.

  • Listened to the audiobook version of Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. I'd read it long ago and was surprised how differently I experienced listening to it. Recommended.

Currently finishing a read of the (British) Rough Guide to Cult Pop (2004) ... a book about pop/rock music and its makers from the 50s forward to to 20 years ago. Broken up into many sections, put together by a crew of Brit-wits, many interesting facts and stories about a half-century of chart hits. Strong recommend IF you're into that sort of thing, appreciate a bit-o-snark, and know most of the names already (or want to).

  • True that about him. (Altho he has confidently misstated the facts a few times.) Sabine definitely has her on days and off days. Maybe I missed her saying exactly those two things you put quotes around. As for the productivity of Big Science, I think she's right to suggest that it has not delivered the way that it once did, and right about how many of its top-rated people have lost its way (while there are still small, almost daily discoveries being made). (HYUGE topic for this little container.)
