  • I sure hope not, the only devices more than a few years old that still function are those with replaceable batteries. Removable batteries make devices simpler, more robust, and longer-lasting. Rechargeable, replaceable, removable, standardized batteries are the sweet spot for sure.

  • I don't know, I'm not sure anyone has made a movie about a boring-ass dystopia where the rich plunder everything and the rest of us are too propagandized to care no matter how desperate things get. I'm going for a special mix of Harrison Bergeron, The Day After Tomorrow and The Road ultimately. Oh and Snowcrash , but until we get there I'm sure "The Frog Boil" will be a hit when it does come out.

  • Yeah, threaded conversations based on replying to comments and sorted by a recency/popularity algo are less usable, in some ways. But the forum format of sorting everything by most recent reply and only being able to append to the end of a conversation has it's own issues. So I don't think one is worse than the other, it's more like the difference between how threading and replies work on email vs. IM, they each have their uses and their drawbacks.

  • Whoa, did that happen to you? I may just be lucky with the state I live in or the practitioner I got but I had 0 issues getting adhd or ssri drugs prescribed while being perfectly open about all that.

  • I bet it would not be hard to 3d print a little ring with a twisty arrow that you could use to "save" your last handle placement, kinda a neat idea.

  • Thanks, viewing it this way really puts retirement into perspective as well. The big promise of modern capitalist countries is that if you, the Worker, take 25% of your paycheck every day for 40 or 50 years and pump it into the stock market, that perhaps you'll be able to live in the capital class (aka off money you already have) at an extremely low level for a while right before you die. That's really all we've been promised and what a lot of people dream of as the peak achievement. Trading half your waking life away for decades to someone who is making more off your work than you are making, so that just maybe, if the market is good at the right time, you get a tiny taste of how the owners and investors have been living this entire time before you die.

  • There's the Working class, who can't live in society without trading their time for money in some way, or being given charity. And the Capital class, who can live in society without doing either.

  • oh, how many files are there in total? I didn't know the total count of all the files the government and the various intelligent agencies has on Epstein was the type of publicly available information that you would need to make a claim like that.

  • Same reason that Putin's enormous archives of blackmail materials on the world's rich and powerful haven't leaked. It ain't like they keep this stuff in a zip file on a web server where you just have to know the address it's at and crack a couple passwords...we're talking isolated, air-gapped systems and physical archives where you would need in-person access to view the material, and are under strict observation the entire time you are viewing the files.

  • There are things that you shouldn't be able to "own" as private property. We basically all agree that our fellow humans are on that list, but whether anything else is on that list is what outlines the spectrum from Capitalism to Communism. I do know that isn't technically definitionally correct, but the simple question "What things on earth should humans not be able to privately own and profit from?" is a pretty good proxy for knowing where the person you are talking to lies on that spectrum.

  • Oh yeah I didn't even consider "gare - adge" vs "gar - ahj" or however the heck you would try and spell the difference in the way it's pronounced. Every time I think about it, I'm so grateful that I don't have to try and learn English as an adult...

  • Well the good news is banks really don't give a shit and they make it pretty trivial to get yourself hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt whether you have a degree or not.

  • What a strange thing to say when every fiat currency in history prior to our current crop of them has eventually gone to 0. We live in fragile, temporary bubbles of wealth concentration largely funded on violence and grift and inflated vastly beyond reality by credit and debt, ones that turn out to be largely illusion when the boss decides to close shop and skip town, not "the only successful system". I agree it is the dominant system and it has essentially destroyed any of the other possible ones at this point.

  • I like the analogy, I have a lot of trouble explaining to people that LLMs are anything more than just a "most likely next token" predictor. Because that is exactly what an LLM is, but saying it that way is so abstract that it abstracts away everything that is actually interesting about them lol. It's like saying a computer is "just" a collection of switches than can be a 1 or 0. Which, yeah, base level, not wrong, but also not all that useful to someone actually curious about what they are and what they can do.

  • Yeah, that's how we'd say it when actually gaming. "Total ownage" man was that fun to yell at your friends while the four of you clustered around a CRT playing Halo on a 4-way split screen and one controller was always the garbage one and mountain dew affected you like cocaine...

  • oh don't you dare start that shit we'll be here all day

  • What a mess of a word now that I look at it. Two Gs pronounced differently, an "E" at the end that does not effect the second "A" (as in Rag vs. Rage). Like imagine trying to pronounce that word if you've never seen it, or spell it if you'd only heard it

  • I'm def saying "pooned" from now on. I'm going to tell people it originated from Moby Dick and is short for "harpooned" 🤣🤣 Get 'Pooned ye Noob Whale!

  • No Stupid Questions @lemmy.world

pwned: do you pronounce it as "pohned" "pawned" or "owned"
