Why so many pedantic idiots? Context lost?

  • I’ve never gotten a Linux system running with the expectation that it will work 100%.

I only expect an OS to do what it was designed to do. I was so happy when steam went full crazy on proton, all of my flat library works like a dream, only 30 or so games, my VR library is over 100.

100% I do know of (and was well aware before my move) the limitations, I used linux in early 00. The way flat games are today I see VR being similar in 5 - 10 yrs (we are a small community overall and even smaller on linux). We WILL get there because the "real gurus" will take us there, I has faith and patience. Until then, M$ can harvest my streams and VR gameplay (I have stripped all apps, files, and flat games from my windows install and I only play for 2hrs at a time 5-7 times a week)

  • Yes, we can play "some" VR games on linux (vive(my headset), index, quest, and pico all have compatibility) but it is not yet at the point flat games are. I'm still trying to get more than the meta ported games to play with proper feeling(even they are a little lacking), the other games almost all have issues with frame rate, making it extremely tiring and headache inducing, then there are the mods that do not have linux native mod installers/launchers (satisfactory modders made theirs work well, install game through steam, run smm, install mods, boom done) where you need to install steam a second time with the game inside it as well. It is coming along and I am here for it, but until VR is up to speed I cannot let go of that crap os, all I can do is play all the games that work well in linux and the rest on a content stripped windows (I've removed all apps and files not required for VR/streaming)

STRONG SUGGESTION FOR VR USERS ON STEAM: Get WLX overlay to be able to interact with your desktop since steam likes to close the desktop overlay when the desktop is interacted with

  • Yeah, I am finding I like snaps less and less, tho I do like the sandbox aspect (her grandson will be using this system from time to time so I feel some sand boxing would be appropriate). will I need to manually update her ff if its an appimage? The only appimage I am using right now is WLX overlay and other than "everything is there" I don't recall if it will update itself.

  • it is Firefox(snap), she only has her account with the official site, not the steam version, I did find that wonderful script for ESO in lutris. I was just suggested gamescope to look at as well

  • She does close it as even on windows she found it made the system laggy, and it appears hardware acceleration is on in firefox but I think the snap is installed (thought I installed the flatpak same install on my system), every setting is the same as mine.

  • Oh nice, just read the page. I haven't installed steam on her system yet as she doesn't need it, she is running through lutris and this looks like it will work. I will definitely test this on sat when she isn't home, thanks

  • I'll need to dig deeper, but she is guarding her pc like a mother lion guarding a cub. I ran the commands - vainfo, vdpauinfo, and vulkaninfo | grep VK_KHR_video_ only vulkaninfo kicked back what it should have. I tried the same commands on my system with the same results and we are using the proprietary Nvidia driver NVIDIA driver (open kernel) metapackage 580 (proprietary, tested) only on her system it doesn't say "device using recomended driver" so I need to find the recommended one for her but she is in the middle of minecraft and youtube and doesn't want to reboot now, hopefully sat I can when she is at work

  • I was smart(mostly), tested everything on other systems, my laptop has a similar gpu, and left her an escape valve by buying a new m.2 and putting the old one in storage.

We been together 20 yrs, she trusts me. Maybe she turns into a stocking wearing cat-girl... hehe

  • Yes, shes been playing since launch

  • We are both running Kubuntu 24.04 with kde desktop. Oh, she can run minecraft and watch yt no problem. ESO is through lutris

  • Heading home soon, will check it. Thanks

  • Linux @lemmy.ml

Nice changes when switching to Linux and a smallish problem

  • Haven't set up my kde desktop yet, so default from install for now. My "other" os uses a totally black background (how often do I see any part of my de? only for a few seconds, before that the os had a folder of images downloaded from nasa of stars and other galactic images

  • I'm hoping to find linux versions one day. If I didn't love vr so much I wouldn't need windows at all as all the flat games I have tried work beautifully from both steam and lutris, ie; satisfactory, ESO, and Dawn of Man.

  • I am dual booting as I get VR to a better level, but I want that cancer off my system completely one day. Right now I have no monitors for vr performance in linux (any suggestions? FPSVR is my monitor for windows in VR) but it "feels" like often I am getting less than 20 fps (eye fatigue and strain that does not occur in the same games on windows) tho it looks like it is at least 35-60fps in the recorded playback, it just feels off.

I am hoping for some feed back on this from people that have used it. I could use bottles but doesn't that also require a windows "install" or container type thing like this? I am just exploring different avenues to get things working and this looks promising, tho a VM may make a bit of a dent in my old ryzen 7-3800 and I am fairly confidant if I had an amd card instead of the RTX 4070ti super my experience would be better but that is a cost I cannot swallow yet and I need a new cpu more. In the end I will prolly try to get wine and bottles working but a simple to get running app like this could be the short term answer

  • Linux Gaming @lemmy.ml

Has anyone tried WinBoat with mod loaders, or system monitors like FPSVR?

  • I’d rather watch the crap I already know I like

Same, tho I do catch a bit of shit from the gf "sigh This again?"

Meanwhile, I'll hear her listen to the same song 5x from down the hall

  • I have cds that would fit in that small a space, they were a thing to give out like business cards and were the same foot print, just cd thick

  • Thats beautiful. mines been watching me for about 5 months game and everything else. Today she is setting up ESO and the addons and may poke around to personalize her system. Bonus, as I removed her windows drive, she found some files she didn't know she had but really wanted. Tonight we get the last bits setup. I forgot that the nvme in her system, my old pc from 5 years ago, only had a 120gb capacity I replaced it with a 1TB nvme

  • Oh, this is a cute game, played the demo. may actually get it

  • unless they need kernel level anticheat, the rest should work. just demonstrate how well your system runs these apps and that should help. just be ready to be their on-call tech hehe

  • Linux @lemmy.ml

    Switching the gf to Linux

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world
    Locked

Is there a way to group posts from different communities together?
