  • You had cassettes? We had to manually transcribe machine code from printed listings.

  • Long ago, I solved all of the ways in which PHP made me sad...

    ...by abandoning it.

Nowadays we have better languages that can do the job at least as well.

  • Breath of the Wild: Beautiful. Mysterious. Inspired.

Tears of the Kingdom. Big. Shallow. Boring.

I found the first dozen or two hours of TotK exciting, as I encountered new mechanics and a darker side of Hyrule. But it wasn't long before the new and exciting became endless expanses of copy/paste encounters and terrain, forgettable characters, and annoying enemies. Nothing felt clever or interesting. I lost interest in exploring, and wandered away from the game.

Then I went back to the first game for another run.

  • Do these accept cash, or only ATM cards? (The latter would link your transaction to your bank account, of course.)

What do they give? A printout of a wallet address?

  • SomaFM uses shoutcast/icecast streams, so just about any half-decent media streaming device or software can play it.

  • You are not alone in feeling it's overblown.

Well-done ray tracing can be beautiful, but realistically, it doesn't matter to me. I'm not Narcissus; I don't play games to stare at my reflection in a puddle. My time and attention are almost entirely devoted to things that move too fast for ray tracing to matter, or reading text, or the geometry of a scene as I plan my approach to whatever I'm about to do.

If all other things were equal, I would gladly take the extra eye candy. But to me, it's not worth paying significantly more money for real-time ray tracing hardware and higher electricity bills.

Please wake me up in ten years or so, when every GPU does it well without measurably increasing power draw.

More pro for the DEC Professional 380 (featuring PRO/VENIX)

  • Why?

  • Their metric for "older" is two years or more.

  • Good point. I forgot about that possibility because I don't spend much time playing in Open mode.

The same thing tends to happen on stronghold carriers in Solo mode, I suspect because Frontier programmed the game to spawn a bunch of NPC ships eager to dock with those carriers when a mini-instance is created. You can be the only player within light years, and still have to wait several minutes for all those NPCs to leave before you can dock.

    facepalm*

  • Ah... Yes, it was most likely a fleet carrier, then. Those are owned by players, and not always open to the public.

  • Was it Elite Dangerous? Stations grant docking clearance if you're within range when you request it; I think it's about 7500 meters. Check out the in-game the tutorials. One of them teaches this.

  • I expect MatrixRTC will be capable of screen sharing if it isn't already, so this is probably just a matter of time, so long as Matrix gets the sponsors they need to continue their work.

  • I don't find it surprising at all. Lots of software bugs remain hidden until some circumstance triggers them. Different hardware, different levels of system load, different filesystems... all sorts of things can make a difference.

For what it's worth, I was using packaged builds on Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, and Debian.

    Glad you've been lucky. :)

  • I've tried it several times over the years, but was disappointed every time to find that it was very crashy. I hope they get that sorted out.

  • I would be satisfied with people not making wild, misleading, insulting claims about others in the first place.

I wonder why you're so intent on arguing in support of that behavior.

  • I don't know if any of what you claim is true, since I haven't followed those discussions. However, even if true, none of it would mean they are anti-LGBT.

  • Servo is a web rendering engine, not a browser.

Also, Ladybird is newer, and therefore news to more people. That, along with the fact that it only recently became a stand-alone project, could explain why you see more talk about it lately.
