The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

  • I feel like most of the objections could be satisfied by having non-essential holodeck stuff in rooms only.

So you have a bed and lighting and core furnishings without it. But you get to use the holodeck to adjust all that to your taste, decorate the room, and othewise make the space yours. Maybe you get a virtual companion if you are lonely.

OTOH, I think replicators are already capable of doing most of what would be done by the in-room holodeck in that case.

To me the energy needs don't really matter since energy consumption only matters in emergencies in Star Trek usually. If the first things you lose when there are power issues are your decorations and your virtual companion, I think that's OK...

Edit - and in the limited space available to a personal cabin even in the Trek universe - it would be cool for your kitchen to be able to become your movie room with a simple voice command, or a personal gym, or an extension to your main living area during a party, etc...

  • It’s just penny pinching.

  • An actual list of the "problems everyone hopes they never have" category of our various problems is pretty long right now, and many of them are more personal than I want to share.

Shit's not the worst it's ever been for us currently, but financially it's closer than my wife realizes it is (because she's got enough to deal with right now), and (gestures around at everything Trump related) I'm figuring several of our problems are going to get worse before they get better.

I've got long and medium term plans to sort most of it out, but like all such plans they depend on the short term stuff going at least more or less as I hope, and on the complete collapse of US society not actually happening.

Glib sounding yet serious response in meme-form because this really is how it's looking so far in my mid-late 50s:

OP sounds like a nice person for posting such a thread, and I hope you are doing well sir or madam. 🙂

  • For the record I wasn't disagreeing with your point or criticizing it at all. Just trying to give some context that might explain what you were observing.

    🙂

  • This would indicate its not a cut and dry as the youtuber suggests and also I would assume he is not a historian(no clue who he is) so its unclear why his opinion or definition of computer program should usurp that of most historians who would recognise a term may change over time and be less well defined initially when inspiring a new technology?

He's a long-standing member of the tech pundit community (dare I say the Linux community), and in recent years has been exposed as antivax, anti-removed, and a bigot. Before that he was just a confident sounding asshole with sometimes interesting opinions.

  • Been there, had that conversation.

  • Maybe the answer to your question is that she already has.

  • I can't say for sure. I think in at least some cases the blackouts are to support local cable tv, which we no longer subscribe to. I don't think there tend to be games that can be watched only in person, but it's possible I just don't know.

  • Nothing gets you guaranteed hero worship and respect like being able to throw or kick a ball or similar in the US. The economics around it are unsurprisingly huge and complex, as everyone tries to be sure they get their piece.

Wait until you hear about how you cannot pay to watch all the NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL games in your market on a streaming service. Unless something has very recently changed, there's no method of legitimately paying where you won't still experience blackouts.

Do with that info what you will. It's very helpful sometimes when folks claim mod abuse.

  • And yes, it is samba, but it’s the only thing I’ve used since it was set like that at default. Why would I look into other ways if it’s working just fine, exactly?

Nothing other than your own personal preference. Across a wide variety of contexts I personally find less headaches with SFTP, but YMMV. There are security and speed arguments, but IIRC there is a lot of variance to those arguments depending on how modern the SMB implementation is and how it's config'd.

I have no idea why you can't save your PW, I've done it this way since at least 2013, under several distros, on several different hardware setups, and have never had an issue having dolphin save my PW.

Are you in the "I disabled the KDE wallet because I wasn't sure how to make it not annoying" crowd? It used to be much harder to work with. (I don't even know if that's the likely reason you have to keep putting your PW in, but I do use KDE wallet, and I never have to put mine in after initial setup in dolphin.)

  • Linux - Open Dolphin (or whatever) > Network > Add Network Folder/Find it > Enter creds > Does not automatically mount the drive when booting the computer back up > Must go into fstab to get it to automount > Stop, because that is ridiculous

I put into the dolphin path sftp://[email protected]. Then I give it my password, and check the box to save it. Then I right click any folder in the destination and do "add to places" and in the future I just navigate to it like a local folder.

I guess I'm supposed to do it a harder way? I've done essentially the same but with smb:// when forced to work with a samba share like an animal.

  • Remember folks, it doesn't have to be the year, it only has to be your year.

Mine was about 19 years ago. I'm no genius, and I haven't regretted it once. Linux has come a long way since then, while windows is deep in the enshittification trenches now, and has been for years. Your YOTLD can start today if you want it to. Tired of being actively abused by your OS? We've been here all along.

And if you are happy where you are, that's fine too.

  • That's what I thought. But maybe there are places where you can just pull up with a truckload of really cheap eggs, stick a sign on the side of the road that says "Farm Fresh Eggs" and be out of there before anyone thinks to ask where you go them.

But if places like that exist, they still seem kinda risky when there is a recent "100K eggs stolen" headline. 😂
