  • My name is a reference to the famous British tank gun and anti-tank gun from WW2. Used in tanks and as standalone anti-tank guns. Put in the Sherman tank to create the Sherman Firefly because it packed more of a punch against enemy armour than the American 75mm.

  • This reads like someone who can't fathom that some people genuinely do like China and think it's doing a good job. It always comes back to Western chauvinism where we think that our values like liberal capitalism and bourgeois democracy are inherently superior to the values held by most people in the global south. Maybe they don't always want what we want.

    Too much criticism of China is based on falsehoods and deliberate misrepresentation of certain aspects of Chinese society, culture, and politics. Case in point: the social credit system. Criticism is fine if it's fair and based on facts.

  • I'm a bit split on the whole topic.

    The cultural reasons for why people get it done are bullshit. Maintaining youth, eliminating every single perceived flaw, and so on. Making people believe that they are worthless without their good looks. It's a culture that isn't healthy for our minds or bodies.

    On the other hand, some of the insults levelled at people who have had cosmetic surgery are incredibly vicious and I don't think it's fair. Much of it is misogynistic when directed at women, and homophobic when directed at men. I believe everyone is entitled to full autonomy to do as they wish with their own body, as long as noone else is harmed by it.

    What actually happened IIRC is NASA bought the pens from a private company that had already developed them. And they didn't pay millions. Pencils were a hazard in space, so NASA adopted this new pen soon afterwards, with the Soviet Space Program following suit soon after.
